Bamboo Sushi provides a refined and thoughtfully curated dining experience with a focus on fresh, sustainable Japanese cuisine. Here’s a detailed look at their offerings:
Dine-In Service: Guests can enjoy their meal in a nicely furnished interior with a modern aesthetic, complemented by warm and friendly service. There is also the option for outdoor seating, perfect for enjoying Portland's pleasant evenings.
Extensive Sushi & Sashimi Menu: While the menu may be described by some as more curated than "regular" sushi restaurants, it features a selection of traditional nigiri and sashimi made with high-quality, often responsibly sourced, fish like King Salmon, Tuna, Scallop, Yellowtail, and various types of salmon (Coho, Steelhead, Sockeye). Many nigiri options are served two ways: "yakumi" with unique toppings like yuzu vinaigrette, truffle salt, or chili garlic sauce, or "neat" (without toppings), allowing for a customizable experience.
Signature House-Made Rolls: A significant highlight of Bamboo Sushi's offerings are their unique, house-made signature rolls. These go beyond typical combinations, featuring creative ingredients and flavor profiles. Popular choices include the "Green Machine" (with tempura fried green bean and green onion, topped with avocado and cilantro sweet chili aioli, with optional albacore, salmon or crab), "The Unicorn" (shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, seasoned crab, cucumbers, avocado, rolled in tempura), and "Friday The 13th" (spicy salmon, cucumber, avocado, topped with MSC-certified albacore, tempura flakes, spicy aioli and eel sauce).
Signature Sashimi: In addition to traditional sashimi, they offer signature sashimi plates with unique preparations, such as Albacore Crispy Onion (seared albacore, garlic aioli, yuzu ponzu, crispy onion) and King Salmon Crudo (white truffle ponzu, cherry tomato, sea salt).
Appetizers and Small Plates: The menu includes a variety of compelling appetizers and small plates beyond sushi, such as Chix Karage (nicely fried), Cucumber Sunomono, Seaweed Salad, Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna, Cauliflower (crunchy fried with spicy black bean sauce), and Japanese Miso Mushrooms. These offer excellent opportunities for sharing and exploring different flavors.
Vegetarian and Vegan Options: Bamboo Sushi is highly accommodating to various dietary needs, offering numerous vegetarian and vegan options that go beyond basic cucumber and avocado rolls. Examples include the Green Machine (can be made vegan), Ume Shiso Roll (pickled plum with shiso), Pickled Veggie Roll, and enticing hot dishes like Crispy Garlic Tofu. They strive to provide flavorful and interesting plant-based choices.
Beverage Program: They offer a full bar, likely including a selection of sake, Japanese beers, wines, and craft cocktails, to complement the dining experience. Guests can also bring their own wine for a corkage fee.

Bamboo Sushi distinguishes itself through several key features and highlights that make it a premier sushi destination in Oregon:
World's First Certified Sustainable Sushi Restaurant: This is arguably Bamboo Sushi's most significant highlight. Since 2008, they have been committed to serving only responsibly harvested seafood certified by organizations like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and recommended by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. They also use organic, non-GMO ingredients and implement eco-friendly practices throughout their operations, contributing 1% of annual sales to environmental nonprofits. This dedication resonates strongly with environmentally conscious Oregonians.
High-Quality and Fresh Ingredients: Customers consistently praise the freshness and quality of the food. Despite some comments on roll size or proportion, the ingredients themselves are consistently described as fresh and tasty, ensuring a high-class culinary experience.
Unique and Inventive Menu: While the menu might be more focused than some expansive sushi restaurants, it excels in offering "more unique and high-quality Japanese food," particularly through its signature rolls and distinctive nigiri preparations. This provides a compelling reason for locals to visit for a special and creative meal.
Excellent Service and Professionalism: Reviews frequently highlight the warm, friendly, patient, and accommodating nature of the staff. The professional handling of any incidents by management further underscores their commitment to customer satisfaction and a superior dining experience.
Appealing Ambiance: The interior is described as "nicely furnished," contributing to a higher-class experience. While lighting can be a bit dark, this often adds to a sophisticated and intimate atmosphere suitable for both casual and special occasions. Outdoor seating also enhances the dining environment on pleasant days.
Commitment to Dietary Needs: Bamboo Sushi is highly welcoming to diners with dietary restrictions, offering numerous clearly labeled vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. This inclusivity makes it a versatile choice for mixed groups where various preferences need to be accommodated.
Strategic Urban Location: Being in downtown Portland offers excellent accessibility and places the restaurant within a vibrant district, appealing to those seeking an urban dining experience combined with nearby cultural attractions.
Positive Reputation: Consistently positive reviews and a strong overall rating on platforms like OpenTable (4.7 stars for the SW location) attest to its consistent quality and high customer satisfaction.
While Bamboo Sushi primarily focuses on delivering a premium, sustainable dining experience, they do offer specific promotions and special opportunities that locals in Oregon can take advantage of:
Happy Hour: Bamboo Sushi locations, including the SW 12th Ave branch, offer Happy Hour specials. For the SW location, Happy Hour runs Monday to Friday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. These often include discounted food and beverage items, providing an excellent opportunity to experience their quality offerings at a more accessible price point. Note that Happy Hour is typically not offered on holidays.
Online Ordering and Delivery Promotions: As Bamboo Sushi is available on major delivery platforms like DoorDash/Caviar and Uber Eats/Postmates, customers may find platform-specific promotions, discounts, or loyalty rewards that can apply to their orders. Checking these apps regularly is a good way to discover temporary deals.
Sustainability-Linked Initiatives: Bamboo Sushi is renowned for being the world's first certified sustainable sushi restaurant. They proudly contribute 1% of their annual sales (and specifically 1% of sales from their "Green Machine Roll" and "Sushi Boards") to environmental nonprofits. While not a direct discount for customers, this commitment allows patrons to feel good about supporting a business that aligns with environmental values, which many Oregonians prioritize. They also feature ASC-certified seafood as part of their commitment to responsible aquaculture, sometimes highlighting special dishes during Earth Month or other campaigns.
Gift Cards: Bamboo Sushi offers gift cards, providing a convenient way to share the Bamboo Sushi experience with friends and family. While not a promotion, it allows for pre-payment or gifting for future visits.
Newsletter Subscription: By subscribing to their newsletter, customers can receive updates on the "freshest catch of news and events" happening at their local Bamboo Sushi, which might include announcements of new menu items, seasonal specials, or occasional exclusive offers.
For the most up-to-date and specific details on promotions, it is always recommended to check the official Bamboo Sushi website or inquire directly at the SW 12th Ave location.

Bamboo Sushi Reviews
We sat out on a warm evening, with an aim of a light dinner. Service is warm and friendly.Kudos to the manager who managed very professionally an incident that occurred. I was a little worried that it could escalate though she handled it well. Thank you.The food - the chix karage was nicely fried. Cucumber sunomono / salad and seaweed salad - decent. They are what you expect tho they are also hard to go wrong. We ordered one roll to try out - it tastes fine tho it isnt great. The roll was kinda floppy and loose, and way too large (circumference wise). It was cut very thinly (about half an inch) and it probably was a practical choice as it is such a large / fat roll… tho it ruins the proportion and mouthfeel of how the roll should be. The ingredients of the roll were otherwise fresh and tasty. To put it in the right context - I would not provide this feedback if this restie is not positioned as a sushi restaurant and is not so pricey.
May 13, 2025 · Winnie TanCame here with a couple of friends for lunch. It wasn't busy at that time. We were greeted promptly to be seated.Interior is definitely nicely furnished, lighting is a bit dark.Menu selection is limited compared to your regular sushi restaurant. They mainly offer their own house made signature rolls in terms of sushi.Food taste-wise was on point. Can taste the freshness of it.Our server was very friendly, patient, and accommodating, which adds to the higher-class experience. It's definitely a place you would go to if you are looking for a more unique and high-quality Japanese food.8/10 would come back again to try other food items on the menu.
Jan 19, 2025 · Bianca LokI should have ordered sushi!! I wanted warm food and ordered the cocked fish and cauliflower. Unfortunately, everything was cold!!! It’s a cute restaurant, service was great but I was not happy about the food. Maybe next time. Good looked great, I just wished it was not so cold .
May 04, 2025 · Fara M (Marco Polo)Bamboo is an often frequented establishment for me and my wife. The food met our high expectations and the service was very attentive without being obnoxious. We ordered the wagyu sliders, edamame for appetizers, my wife had a custom hand roll on soy paper and I had the specialty Roll “The Unicorn”.
