Daruma Chinese & Japanese Cuisine presents several features and highlights that might appeal to local diners in the Bronx, alongside some points to consider based on customer feedback:
Dual Cuisine Offering: A significant highlight is the availability of both Chinese and Japanese dishes under one roof. This diverse menu caters to a wider range of preferences, making it a versatile option for families or groups with varied tastes. For instance, one person can enjoy sushi while another orders General Tso's Chicken.
Broad Menu Selection: Within both cuisines, Daruma offers an extensive array of choices, from numerous specialty sushi rolls (e.g., Daruma Roll, White Dragon, Sea Dragon) and sashimi to various kitchen entrees like Teriyaki and Hibachi, as well as Chinese staples like Boneless Spare Ribs and Fried Chicken Wings. This ensures there's almost certainly something for everyone.
Popular Menu Items: Customers have specifically mentioned enjoying the "shrimp tempura & California roll" and finding them "my new obsession recently!" Other positive comments on platforms indicate that many find the sushi to be "delicious" and "fresh," and some express a consistent liking for their favorites like "beef in garlic sauce."
Friendly Customer Interactions (in some cases): One positive review highlights that "The people are really nice!" and specifically mentions the owner greeting a customer "just as friendly" even on a first visit, engaging in conversation, and being "very attentive" to dietary needs like gluten allergies. This suggests a capacity for warm and personalized service, which is a strong positive for a local spot.
Good Atmosphere (for some): A positive review noted that "The atmosphere is nice as well," contributing to an overall pleasant dining experience.
However, it's also important to acknowledge areas where customer experiences have been less positive:
Inconsistent Service/Attitude: One review describes a negative interaction where a cashier exhibited an "attitude" and "instantly started tapping the counter" when asked about soup, suggesting potential inconsistencies in staff demeanor.
Perceived Value and Portion Size: A customer reported a "$15 lunch special" that was "okay at best" and stated that "the pieces were 50% smaller but the price was 30% higher," leading to dissatisfaction and dubbing the restaurant "Mini Sushi." Other reviews also mention "small amount of food for a lot of money" or "portions are a little skimpy."
Food Quality Concerns: While some find the food good, criticisms include a "mushroom soup that came with barely has mushrooms and strong flavor of scallions" and concerns about sushi freshness and a negative stomach reaction in one instance. Other reviews mention "yellowtail could have been a little more fresher" and food being "a little greasy." There's also a serious concern regarding an allergy mix-up where a customer allergic to shrimp received shrimp fried rice instead of their order.
Packaging Concerns: One customer was "totally shocked that a $70 order was covered in saran wrap" for sushi delivery, raising questions about appropriate food packaging for certain dishes.
Restaurant Ambiance (at certain times): A review mentioning the restaurant being "empty only one person at lunch time (2pm)" could indicate a quiet atmosphere, which may be a pro or con depending on personal preference, but could also suggest less foot traffic at certain times.
Based on typical practices for Chinese and Japanese restaurants in New York City, Daruma Chinese & Japanese Cuisine likely offers some form of daily or weekly specials, though specific details are not extensively provided in the given reviews. However, the online menu listings on platforms like Uber Eats indicate the following structured offers:
Lunch Specials: Daruma offers a range of lunch specials, including "Lunch Hibachi," "Sushi Bar Lunch" (e.g., Sushi Set, Sashimi Set, Chirashi Bowl), and "Lunch Special Roll" options (e.g., Any Two Rolls, Any Three Rolls). These are typically available during specific midday hours (e.g., 11:30 AM - 3:00 PM on weekdays) and are generally priced more affordably than dinner entrees.
Combo Meals: The menu includes various "Combo" options (e.g., Combo B, Combo C), which are often popular choices, suggesting they offer a good combination of items at a set price point.
Free with Purchase Deals: On certain delivery platforms, there might be offers like "Free with $40 purchase," encouraging larger orders by adding a complimentary item.

Its location on 901 Sheridan Ave makes it readily accessible, providing a nearby solution for those craving either Chinese or Japanese fare, or a combination of both. Furthermore, the presence of their services on major delivery platforms offers the convenience of enjoying their food from the comfort of your home.
However, as local users, it's prudent to approach Daruma Chinese & Japanese Cuisine with an informed perspective, based on varied customer experiences. While some patrons have praised the staff as "really nice" and the atmosphere as "nice," indicating potential for warm and attentive service, other reviews highlight inconsistencies, including reports of less-than-ideal staff attitudes and concerns about food quality, particularly regarding freshness of some items or preparation. Issues like an accidental allergy exposure to shrimp in one order are serious and warrant careful consideration, especially for those with dietary restrictions. Perceived value, with some customers noting smaller portions for higher prices, is another factor to keep in mind. For those in the Bronx seeking a quick and diverse Asian meal, Daruma can certainly serve that purpose. However, managing expectations regarding consistency, especially with delivery orders, and perhaps clarifying specific requests directly, would be advisable to ensure the most satisfying experience.

Daruma chinese & Japanese Cuisine Reviews
Walked in and it was empty only one person at lunch time (2pm) already felt that was off but decided to try something new in the area. Got a simple lunch special which turned out to be $15 after tax. It is okay at best, eating because I’m hungry. Mushroom soup that came with barely has mushrooms and strong flavor of scallions. When I asked what kind of soup it was when ordering because menu does not indicate, cashier caught an attitude and instantly started tapping the counter , I should’ve just walked out then but didn’t want to keep walking around. Will not be back.
Dec 23, 2024 · Stephanie SotoI get the shrimp tempura & California roll! (Comes out to about $20) Been my new obsession recently! The people are really nice! The atmosphere is nice as well. I’ll recommend to everyone
Apr 15, 2025 · JenniferWhile I think this little spot has potential, it’s not ready yet. Aside from the unclean appearance, I watched the front chef using his hands to scoop up rice for an order. This is common for this type of restaurant but the chef is required to wear gloves, which this one did. The problem was he wore the same glove to wipe the counter and to handle meat. He did not change the glove before scooping the rice. Another thing I noticed while walking to the sitting area, was a door in the back was left open and inside I saw a tub filled with meat sitting in red sauce, chopped meat on a counter, and a garbage can right next to both and no one in sight. The floors were dirty and so were the tables. I found this place so unclean that I could not stomach to try the food. I threw it out after seeing all I saw and left.
Sep 28, 2023 · Steven HowardGood food. Decent prices. We ordered the 2 roll lunch special. I just wish they added more food or veggies inside their rolls. The spicy tuna roll had only that. Maybe with the lunch menu that's how it comes but it should have more. The service is decent considering the large amount of people coming in to order food. The place is clean and there is plenty of seating. I think they should consider an option of grab and go for people who can't wait around. Overall not bad.
Oct 11, 2022 · Jasmine RosasI have gotten food twice from here. I forgot to review the first time, but I remember now.I got the teriyaki beef, which came with a salad. Their idea of 'salad' is a lot of mostly raw onion underneath whatever meat they put. I was supposed to get medium steak, what I got was tougher than a boot and more well done than I had ever had the displeasure of eating. The rice was bland and cold, the block was solid and went down like sludge. I actually choked on it twice. I had a single broccoli flouret and two thin slices of a carrot.I'd also gotten a plain tuna roll, because you can't possibly mess that up, right? Wrong. So very wrong. The slices fell apart and were not rolled properly. The restaurant was empty except for two people, despite being right in front of a courthouse, they are never busy when I looked inside. Now I know why. The rice was the same as what was in the meal. I wouldn't recommend anything from here, but I wish them the best.
