Echigo, nestled on Santa Monica Boulevard, stands out as a true "hidden gem" that consistently delivers on these fronts. It's a place that foregoes elaborate pretense, choosing instead to focus all its attention on the art of sushi, making it a beloved spot for those who appreciate the true craft of Japanese cuisine.
Echigo has built its reputation on the foundation of exceptionally fresh fish and the meticulous preparation by its artisan chefs. Diners frequently describe their experience as one where "the fish was the highlight, offering unparalleled freshness and flavor that spoke volumes of the chef’s dedication to quality and craft." This commitment to using top-tier ingredients, often locally sourced, ensures that each bite is a "delightful discovery of taste." Whether you're indulging in their omakase or selecting individual pieces, the quality is consistently lauded as "great."
What further enhances the experience at Echigo is the warm and welcoming atmosphere, complemented by incredibly friendly and effective service. Despite its "simple and unpretentious setting," the staff's kindness and attentiveness create an inviting environment where guests feel genuinely cared for. For locals in California, particularly those in the Los Angeles area, Echigo represents a must-visit destination for authentic and superb sushi that truly exceeds expectations.
Echigo is conveniently located at 12217 Santa Monica Blvd Ste201, Los Angeles, CA 90025, USA. This address places it squarely within the heart of West Los Angeles, a dynamic and easily accessible area for many residents and visitors. Santa Monica Boulevard is a major east-west artery, providing clear navigation to the restaurant.
Situated in a plaza on the second floor, Echigo benefits from being in a high-traffic area with readily available parking. While parking can sometimes be a challenge in Los Angeles, plazas often offer dedicated parking spaces, which is a definite advantage for diners. Its location on a major boulevard also means it's well-served by public transportation routes, making it accessible even for those without a car. This ease of access, combined with its reputation for quality, makes Echigo a convenient and attractive option for a premium sushi experience in West LA.
Echigo offers a range of services centered around providing an authentic and high-quality sushi dining experience:
- Dine-In Service: Enjoy your meal in a simple, clean, and unpretentious setting that focuses all attention on the culinary experience.
- Omakase Dining: A highly recommended service where the chef selects and prepares a multi-course meal based on the freshest seasonal ingredients. Echigo offers a Premium Omakase (e.g., 8 pieces + blue crab roll with miso soup or salad for around $67.60) and a more extensive "Rockpool" omakase featuring locally sourced fish and premium shellfish, as well as a "Sea Breeze" fish-only omakase.
- A La Carte Sushi and Sashimi: A comprehensive menu of individual sushi (nigiri, 2 pieces per order) and sashimi options, including various cuts of tuna (Toro, Akami), salmon, yellowtail, albacore, and seasonal fish.
- Specialty Rolls and Hand Rolls: While not a place for "fancy Super-Crunchy-Philly-Dragon-Fire rolls," they offer classic rolls and noted items like the blue crab hand roll.
- Lunch Specials: Echigo provides an "All Day Lunch Special" (around $23.00) which includes 5 pieces of nigiri (tuna, yellowtail, white fish, salmon, albacore) and a blue crab roll, offering great value.
- Chef's Meticulous Preparation: The chef's artistry is a key service, with meticulous preparation and presentation of each dish.
- Attentive and Friendly Service: The staff is consistently praised for being "incredibly friendly and effective," enhancing the warm and welcoming atmosphere.
- Takeout and Delivery: Echigo offers takeout services and partners with third-party delivery platforms (like DoorDash, Grubhub) for convenient at-home dining.
- Beverage Selection: A selection of beer and sake is available to complement the meal.
Echigo stands out as a premier sushi destination in Los Angeles thanks to several distinctive features and highlights:
- Unparalleled Freshness and Quality of Fish: This is consistently the top highlight. Customers rave about the "really good quality fish" and "unparalleled freshness and flavor," emphasizing the chef's dedication to sourcing the best ingredients. Nothing is described as disappointing in terms of fish quality.
- Authentic, No-Frills Experience: Echigo prides itself on being a "no-frills sushi restaurant" with a "simple and unpretentious setting." This allows all attention to remain on the culinary experience, appealing to purists who seek genuine, high-quality sushi without distractions.
- Masterful Omakase: The omakase experience is a significant draw, offering a chef-curated journey through seasonal and premium fish. Options cater to different preferences, ensuring a delightful and surprising meal. The previous omakase price of around $80 for 2 appetizers and 8 pieces was considered "great" value for the quality. Newer pricing of $67.60 for a Premium Omakase makes it even more accessible.
- Artisan Chef: The chef is recognized as a "true artisan," impressing diners with "meticulous preparation and presentation of each dish," highlighting the skill and passion behind the food.
- Exceptional and Friendly Service: The staff are consistently praised for being "very kind," "incredibly friendly and effective," and attentive, contributing significantly to the "overall warm and welcoming atmosphere."
- Value for Quality: Despite offering premium fish, customers find the pricing to be reasonable, especially for the quality received. For example, the lunch special and omakase options are highlighted for providing "good relative value" compared to other top LA sushi spots.
- Hidden Gem Status: Many refer to Echigo as a "hidden gem" that delivers "memorable meals from the most unexpected places," suggesting it's a cherished secret among those in the know.
- Traditional Preparation Techniques: Echigo utilizes traditional methods like "Zuke" (marinating tuna in special seasoning) and "Konbu-jime" (salting and wrapping fish in konbu seaweed) to enhance flavors and textures.
While Echigo may not advertise frequent, broad-based promotions in the traditional sense (like daily happy hours on all items), its value proposition often comes through specific menu items and its omakase pricing:
- Premium Omakase at Competitive Pricing: The omakase experience, which typically costs around $67.60 for 8 pieces of chef's choice nigiri and a blue crab roll with miso soup or seaweed salad, is considered a significant "deal" for the quality of fish and chef's artistry offered. This price point makes a high-end omakase experience more accessible than at many other top sushi restaurants in Los Angeles.
- All-Day Lunch Special: Priced around $23.00, this special includes 5 pieces of nigiri (tuna, yellowtail, white fish, salmon, albacore) and a blue crab roll. This is an excellent value for quality sushi, available throughout their lunch hours, making it an attractive option for a midday meal.
- Takeout Offerings: During certain periods (like post-pandemic), Echigo has offered "high-value omakase" and special "chirashi bowls" for takeout, showcasing their adaptability and commitment to providing quality at value for at-home dining.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on their menu, pricing, and any current seasonal offerings, it is always recommended to check their official website if available, popular food delivery platforms like DoorDash or Grubhub where their full menu is listed, or call Echigo directly.

Feb 16, 2024 · Bogdan AAwesome spot for traditional sushi and sashimi. Absolutely no frills here and you won't find any western cut rolls on the menu. Prices are reasonable for top cuts, but def not cheap. Week day happy hour chirashi bowl was excellent, but everyone knows the lunch specials here are the real bargain. Reservations preferred for dinner, sushi bar does a nice looking omakase I'll have to come back for.
