Gyu-Kaku Greensboro

Japanese restaurant ★4.0 (231)·$30–50

3920 Cotswold Ave, Greensboro, NC 27410, USA

4.0
I’ve been to this Gyu-Kaku location at least 10 times since it opened, always in groups of 4–6 friends. We even got to know the owner. But this past Saturday left us deeply disappointed: we found a fly 🪰 in our soup. The staff’s initial response? A 5% discount. That’s right—5% for serving soup with a fly in it. We were stunned. That doesn’t even cover the minimum tip. When we asked to speak to the owner, he launched into a long justification about how a bowl of soup isn’t worth much, that it’s a buffet so we should be satisfied with 5%, and said, “I have no problem eating a fly myself.” He even told us not to make a scene because we were hurting his business, and that he “didn’t need our table anyway.”After pushing back, we got the discount increased to 20%, but the entire exchange was rude and dismissive. And unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time we’ve had issues here. Service for our table was often noticeably slower than others, and portion sizes looked smaller. On a previous visit, the same owner told me—a young Asian woman—that studying was pointless, and that the only way I could secure immigration status here was by marrying a rich man over 40. Completely inappropriate and demeaning. We kept quiet in the past, but after this latest incident, it feels important to speak up. The food might be fine, but don’t expect accountability, basic respect, or fair treatment here. - Patrick Ulrich

Promotions or Special Offers

Gyu-Kaku Greensboro is known for offering several compelling promotions and special deals, particularly through its All You Can Eat (AYCE) options and potential happy hour pricing. These are designed to provide value and encourage a dynamic dining experience:

  • All You Can Eat (AYCE) Courses: This is arguably their most significant and consistent promotion. Gyu-Kaku offers multiple AYCE tiers (e.g., "Standard," "Premium," "Ultimate," "Supreme"), each with a different price point and selection of meats, appetizers, and sides. These allow diners to enjoy unlimited grilling within a 90-minute time limit, offering significant value, especially for groups. Prices for AYCE can vary but generally start around $30-$40 per person for adults, with discounts for kids (ages 6-12) and seniors (60+).
  • Happy Hour Deals: Gyu-Kaku locations often feature extensive "Happy Hour" pricing, typically available during specific hours on weekdays and sometimes weekends. These can include reduced prices on popular BBQ items, appetizers (like Spicy Tuna Volcano, Edamame, Gyoza), ramen, and alcoholic beverages (beer, sake, cocktails). Checking their website or calling the restaurant for current happy hour times and offerings is highly recommended.
  • Lunch Specials: During weekday lunch hours, Gyu-Kaku often provides "Lunch Set" options, which bundle a selection of BBQ items with rice, soup, and salad at a more affordable price than dinner. For example, a set with 2 BBQ items might be around $15.45, and 3 BBQ items around $19.45.
  • New Member App Offers: Gyu-Kaku sometimes offers incentives for new members who download their mobile app, such as "$10 off on your next visit" after a certain spend threshold (e.g., $30 or more).
  • S'mores Dessert: While not a discount, the complimentary (or low-cost) S'mores for grilling at the table is a unique and appealing "offer" that adds significant value and fun to the dining experience, especially for families.
