Hakata TonTon

Authentic Japanese restaurant, Modern izakaya restaurant ★4.0 (206)·$50–100

43 Mott St, New York, NY 10013, USA

4.0
We ordered a few appetizers and their signature tonton nabe. Let me just say the nabe had little to no flavors (only tasted the spice) with small portion of meat. Would recommend trying out Kimura in St Marks for authentic nabe. Appetizers wise, we ordered the gyu tongue which was way overpriced for $26 and only came in 4-5 pieces. The citrus salmon sashimi had no citrus flavors and the cod roe omelet actually came out cold which was odd.Overall, our experience was pretty underwhelming. Service was okay and ambiance was nice. I appreciate the quality of ingredients but the execution just wasn’t there. - Kristie Kam

Hakata TonTon Introduce

Introduction to Hakata TonTon

Hakata TonTon is a true culinary treasure, offering New Yorkers an authentic taste of Hakata, a region in southern Japan. While many Japanese restaurants in the city focus on sushi and ramen, Hakata TonTon specializes in the unique and comforting "soul food" of its namesake region. The ambiance is designed to be both casual and cozy, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed dinner or a lively night out with friends and family.

The name "TonTon" itself is a playful nod to the star ingredient, with "ton" translating to pig in Japanese. This playful spirit is reflected in the restaurant's decor and welcoming atmosphere. Chef Koji Hagihara, who has a long history in the culinary world, has brought his expertise and unique recipes to New York, creating a menu that is a testament to the rich food culture of Hakata, which has influences from both Chinese and Korean cuisines. While some diners may find the menu offerings adventurous, the quality of ingredients and expert preparation make it a rewarding experience for any adventurous foodie. Hakata TonTon provides an immersive dining experience that feels like a genuine trip to Japan, offering a blend of traditional flavors and a modern, trendy setting.
