Hannosuke Introduce
For discerning lovers of authentic Japanese cuisine in California, Hannosuke stands as a beacon for impeccably prepared tempura and soba. Originating from Nihonbashi in Tokyo, Hannosuke has brought its highly acclaimed traditional "Edomae Tendon" – a delicious bowl of rice topped with various perfectly fried tempura – to the heart of Los Angeles. This isn't just about fried food; it's about a culinary art form where each ingredient is transformed into a light, crispy, and flavorful masterpiece, offering a taste of Japan right here in California.
Hannosuke’s philosophy is rooted in the careful preparation of each dish, with a particular emphasis on the freshness of ingredients and the mastery of tempura frying. Their dedication to authenticity is evident in every bite, from the delicate crunch of their tempura to the perfectly firm texture of their soba noodles. Whether you’re a long-time fan of Japanese food or new to the delights of authentic tempura, Hannosuke provides a welcoming and truly satisfying dining experience.
Strategically located within the Mitsuwa Marketplace at 3760 S Centinela Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90066, USA, Hannosuke offers remarkable accessibility for residents across the greater Los Angeles area. This prime spot in West LA makes it a convenient destination for those in nearby communities such as Culver City, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and Venice. Being inside a popular Japanese supermarket, Mitsuwa Marketplace, adds to the appeal, allowing patrons to combine their meal with a unique shopping experience.
The location boasts ample parking, which is a significant advantage in Los Angeles. Customers generally find it easy to park in the Mitsuwa Marketplace lot, making visits stress-free. While located within a bustling marketplace food court, Hannosuke maintains its distinct identity and commitment to quality. It's a place that many locals appreciate for its proximity and ease of access, a sentiment echoed by a customer who expressed gratitude that the South Centinela location is "almost close to home" after their previous go-to Hannosuke in Torrance closed down. The establishment also offers both dine-in and takeout options, catering to various preferences for enjoying their authentic Japanese fare.
Hannosuke specializes in a focused menu that highlights its expertise in tempura and soba, ensuring each dish is prepared to perfection. Here’s a look at the services and dining options available:
- Dine-In Service: Customers can enjoy their meals within the vibrant, casual atmosphere of the Mitsuwa Marketplace food court. While the setting is casual, the quality of the food is consistently high. Dining in sometimes offers the experience of receiving your meal in a "Nice Bowl," although at peak times, bento-style containers might be used for efficiency.
- "Tendon" Specialties: The signature dish is "Tendon," which consists of a variety of tempura items served over rice with a special, savory sauce. Popular options include:
- Original Tendon: Featuring white fish, shrimp, shishito pepper, seaweed, pumpkin, and a poached egg.
- Shrimp Tendon: Generous portions of shrimp tempura along with other vegetables and a poached egg. Customers frequently praise the "Shrimp Tendon" as "good and delicious."
- Edomae Tendon: A more elaborate option, often including conger eel, shrimp, shishito pepper, seaweed, poached egg, and kakiage (a mixed vegetable and seafood tempura fritter). This is a hallmark of the Nihonbashi Tendon Kaneko Hannosuke experience.
- Chicken Tendon: Offering chicken tempura alongside other classic components.
- Soba Noodles: Hannosuke offers both hot and cold soba noodles, providing a refreshing or comforting complement to the tempura. The soba can be served chilled with a dipping sauce or hot in a flavorful broth. This versatility allows diners to choose based on their preference and the season.
- Tempura Plates: For those who prefer their tempura separate from rice, various tempura plate sets are available, offering assortments of freshly fried ingredients.
- A La Carte Tempura: Individual pieces of tempura, such as shrimp, conger eel (anago), soft-boiled egg, pumpkin, and shishito pepper, can be ordered to customize your meal or enjoy as snacks.
- Takeout & Delivery: For ultimate convenience, Hannosuke offers takeout services, allowing you to pick up your order. Additionally, delivery is available through popular third-party platforms like Uber Eats and Postmates, bringing their delicious tempura and soba directly to your home or office.
Hannosuke distinguishes itself through several key features that contribute to its reputation as a must-visit Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles:
- Masterful Tempura Artistry: The most significant highlight is Hannosuke's tempura. Reviewers consistently describe it as "a masterclass in Japanese culinary artistry—light, crispy, and perfectly golden." Each piece, from shrimp to vegetables, is fried with precision, ensuring a delicate balance of texture and flavor that avoids any greasiness.
- Signature Tempura Egg: A standout item that garners particular praise is the tempura egg. With its "soft, runny yolk encased in a soft shell," it's described as a component that "elevates the meal to a whole new level." This unique offering exemplifies Hannosuke's attention to detail and culinary innovation within traditional boundaries.
- Authentic Soba Noodles: Hannosuke's commitment to quality extends to its soba noodles. Whether served "chilled with a dipping sauce or hot in a comforting broth," the soba is cooked to "the ideal firmness," showcasing the restaurant's dedication to authenticity and complementing the tempura perfectly.
- The "Secret" Tendon Sauce: A crucial element of their famous Tendon bowls is the proprietary sauce. This savory, slightly sweet sauce is poured over the tempura and rice, enhancing the overall flavor profile without overwhelming the delicate taste of the tempura. It's a key factor in the dish's popularity and uniqueness.
- High-Quality, Fresh Ingredients: Hannosuke prides itself on sourcing fresh ingredients. This commitment ensures that every component of their dishes, from the seafood to the vegetables, contributes to a superior dining experience.
- Value and Portion Sizes: Many customers find Hannosuke to offer good value for the quality and portion sizes, particularly for lunch. The "light, quick lunch" sets are noted as being just the right amount of food, providing a satisfying meal.
- Connection to Japanese Heritage: The restaurant maintains a strong connection to its Nihonbashi, Tokyo roots, aiming to reproduce the "Edomae Tendon" experience authentically. They use custom-made Arita wares for serving and employ chefs trained in Japan, bringing an authentic piece of Japanese culinary tradition to California.
While Hannosuke primarily focuses on the consistent quality of its core menu, it’s worth noting that its location within the bustling Mitsuwa Marketplace might occasionally align with broader marketplace events or seasonal promotions. However, specific, ongoing, Hannosuke-only promotions are not widely advertised as standard practice. Their competitive pricing for high-quality tempura and soba is often considered a value in itself.
Based on customer reviews, the pricing for their signature dishes like the Original Tendon (around $13.48), Shrimp Tendon (around $14.48), and Tempura & Soba (around $15.98) already offers significant value for the quality of food provided. These consistent price points and the satisfying portions, especially for lunch, serve as an inherent "offer" for regulars and new customers alike.
It is always recommended to check directly with the restaurant or their online delivery platforms (like Uber Eats or Postmates) for any current specials or limited-time offerings that might be available. For instance, some third-party delivery apps might offer occasional discounts or delivery promotions, so it's always a good idea to check those platforms before ordering.

Apr 22, 2025 · R KimI enjoy eating Hannosuke Shrimp Tendon which is good and delicious. Me and my dad used to come to Hannosuke at Torrance but it is no longer there. So I’m grateful that there is a Hannosuke at South Centinela which is almost close to home. So they have many good meals to try. Sometimes if you dine in they will give you the meal in a Nice Bowl but sometimes they will give a bento style if they don’t have enough bowls when you dine in. So this is a good place for lunch. I know it has a 3.7 Rating but to me I give it 5 Stars.
Aug 12, 2022 · Jonathan TachibanaThe food was average, not particularly impressive. The tempura lacked crunch and was soggy, with some vegetables overcooked—nothing you couldn’t easily make at home.Service was disappointing. I wasn’t informed that the shiso tempura (listed on the menu) wasn’t available until after I ordered, and there was no apology offered. The cashier mentioned nori tempura as a replacement, but the lack of communication was frustrating. There was also a long wait despite the place not being busy, and no free water was provided.Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time I’ve had a subpar experience here.
Dec 16, 2024 · Bruna ImaiGood tempura is traditionally high class, light, and expensive. Hannosuke offers a different approach to tempura with their tendon rice bowls that are saucy, robust, and full of flavor. Their menu concept is very simple: tempura, soba, and rice, but they still have a lot of choices and even a kids option. I ordered the Edomae Tendon because it had the anago (freshwater eel). It came with lots of rice, miso soup, and some pickled ginger. It all tastes very good and it’s very hearty. Only issue is that it could be crunchier. The tempura was a little soggy.
Jul 28, 2023 · Dom KuFresh and wonderfully fried shrimps. Had the shrimp dish with additional sides of ice cream and shrimp. Awesome staff Mayra and Erika, and great food!
