I ai Sushi provides a quaint and cozy environment, creating an intimate dining experience that many describe as having a "mom & pop shop vibe." While some reviewers have noted that the ambiance might be a bit dated, with a slight smell from older carpeting, the overall impression is one of cleanliness and a focus on the food itself. The simplicity of the decor contributes to its traditional feel, making it a comfortable spot for a quick bite or a relaxed meal. It’s the kind of place where the authenticity of the food takes precedence over elaborate aesthetics, reminiscent of smaller, dedicated eateries found in Japan.
The service at I ai Sushi is often characterized by its efficiency and a personal touch. Many customers have praised the quick service and the kindness of the waitstaff. It’s a family-run establishment, with the husband often cooking in the back and the wife serving in the front, providing an intimate and genuine interaction. While some reviewers mention that the staff might not be fluent English speakers, this has generally not been an impediment to communication or placing orders. Patrons are encouraged to be respectful and patient, understanding that the restaurant may be short-staffed at times. Despite any language barriers, the dedication to providing good service and authentic food shines through. It's noted that they have very clean bathrooms, which contributes to the overall positive perception of the establishment's care for its patrons.
I ai Sushi prides itself on serving authentic Japanese food, often described as what you would find in Japan. Their menu is extensive, featuring a wide array of classic Japanese dishes beyond just sushi, though their sushi offerings are highly regarded. Customers consistently rave about the flavorful dishes and the quality of ingredients. Here are some highlights based on customer reviews and menu information:
- Sushi and Rolls: A standout is the California Tempura Roll, which one reviewer described as "fried to perfection and so flavorful." Other popular sushi options include the Rainbow Roll, praised for being "super flavorful," and the Spicy Tuna Roll. They also offer less common rolls like the Crispy Eel California Roll, Lobster Tempura Roll, and the Special Volcano Roll. For those who enjoy variety, they have sushi and sashimi combos and even Chirashi (assorted sliced raw fish and vegetables on seasoned rice).
- Traditional Japanese Dishes: Beyond sushi, I ai Sushi is celebrated for its cooked dishes. The Katsu Curry and Spicy Ramen are frequently mentioned as must-try items, offering rich and satisfying flavors. Other traditional offerings include Gyu Don (beef bowl), Tonkatsu (breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet), Eel Don (broiled eel over rice), and Karaage (fried chicken). For a taste of Japanese comfort food, dishes like Omusubi (rice balls, with salmon and spam options available) are popular and often cited as difficult to find elsewhere in Tampa. They also serve unique items like Tenzaru Soba (cold soba noodles with tempura).
- Appetizers: Popular starters include Krab Rangoon, described as "crunchy and warm" (though one reviewer noted a cold center on occasion), Gyoza (pan-fried pork dumplings), Takoyaki (octopus pancakes), and Korokke (potato croquettes). They also offer staples like Edamame, Seaweed Salad, and Miso Soup.
- Bento Boxes: For a complete meal, I ai Sushi offers various bento boxes such as Karaage Bento Box, Sashimi and Tempura Bento Box, Chicken Teriyaki and Tempura Bento Box, and Tonkatsu & Tempura Bento Box, providing a well-rounded experience.
The restaurant's commitment to using authentic ingredients and preparation methods is what truly sets it apart, attracting those who appreciate a genuine Japanese culinary experience.
I ai Sushi operates with specific hours that cater to both lunch and dinner crowds. They are typically open for lunch from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, and for dinner from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Tuesday through Saturday. On Sundays and Mondays, they are open for dinner only from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM. It is advisable to check their latest hours or call ahead, especially for larger groups. Online ordering for pickup and delivery is available through various platforms, with ordering hours generally from 11:45 AM to 2:15 PM and 4:15 PM to 8:45 PM. However, it's worth noting that if you order certain popular items like Omusubi (3 or more pieces), there might be a waiting time of up to 40 minutes, indicating their made-to-order approach and dedication to freshness.
One unique aspect mentioned by a customer is the payment and tip often being processed before the meal. While this might be unusual for some, it's a detail to be aware of when dining there. The restaurant also has certain "house rules" conveyed through homemade signs, adding to its quirky, authentic character. For those looking for a truly traditional experience, I ai Sushi is often recommended over other Japanese restaurants in the area that may be Korean or Chinese-owned and offer a different style of menu. Despite some minor eccentricities, the consensus among patrons is that the food quality is consistently high and well worth the visit.
In summary, I ai Sushi offers a distinct and authentic Japanese dining experience in Tampa. Its cozy atmosphere, dedicated service, and most importantly, its genuinely traditional and flavorful menu items, make it a beloved spot for locals seeking a true taste of Japan. Whether you're in the mood for perfectly fried tempura, comforting ramen, or unique sushi rolls, I ai Sushi provides a culinary journey that aims to transport your taste buds straight to Japan.

I ai Sushi Reviews
I had a great evening at I ai Sushi. In terms of food everything came fast and was delicious. I ordered a California Tempura and Kraft Rangoon off of their menu. The California roll was fried to perfection and was so flavorful, this alone made me want to come back. The Krab Rangoon was crunchy and warm, however the center was cold when I ordered it, making it a little less pleasing. Another thing that was strange was the payment and tip having to be paid before the meal, which was fine with me but to each their own. Besides this, the service was quick and the waitress was very kind. The restaurant is quaint, cozy, and a great place for a quick bite!
Apr 20, 2025 · Isabelle CorpsVery traditional restaurant. The lady who served us was not much an english speaker however this was not impeditive for us to communicate and place our order. Be respectful and patient as they are short of staff. The food was really good and traditional. We ordered a gyu don Tonkatsu and Eel guy don.
Apr 20, 2025 · Fernando RomaoThis place has the best authentic Japanese food. Tonight, I had the Eel and Gyudon bowl and the Takoyaki. My partner had the Spicy Cod Omusubi and Chirashi. We've been coming here for over 3 years now, and the quality has not wavered.
Feb 15, 2024 · GraceA close friend of mine just ate here and apparently he had a bad experience especially for his first time being there. I guess if you weren’t so rude to your costumers who are paying you to eat there. You wouldn’t have such bad reviews, maybe you should think of the way you treat your costumers next time or you wouldn’t have such bad reviews and business. Kindness and respect goes a long ways. Also I won’t be coming here myself considering my friend had such a bad experience I don’t want to get the same treatment as they did. So therefore you won’t get my business either. Now if you were nice and considerate I would have gave your business a shot but since you have such poor hosting skills it doesn’t deserve my time or experience.
Jan 10, 2025 · amber FlaglerI wanted to try something new that was nearby my chiropractor. And I was in the mood for sushi/sashimi. I was kind of excited when I found it was located right nearby. The photos of the plates looked pretty good so I figured why not? And the pricing was a little elevated, but I would like to think for the pricing it still would’ve been OK.As soon as I walked in, the woman could barely speak English or appear to barely speak English. They have no fountain drinks, it’s all bottled even though the jasmine tea was good. They don’t offer a military discount, which OK, I get it some companies don’t and that’s OK too.You pay first before being served, which is a first for me with one of these type of restaurants but again not a problem. When the food was served, I actually needed to question the spicy tuna because of the texture. I have never heard of spicy tuna rolls, being chopped or mashed..The eel roll wasn’t as tasty or crispy like I had hoped. My salmon roll with cream cheese, a.k.a. Philly roll, could’ve used a little bit more cream cheese, and you had to pay extra for the cream cheese. When I was done, I had asked to use the bathroom, now we won’t go into it too much but about five minutes into my being in the bathroom someone knocked, and I said it was occupied. The second time a knock came through and a woman’s voice called out “you need to leave now“.Now - I was paying Customer and there was no one else in the restaurant when I stepped out of the bathroom still needing to go.So to the owners, as far as I was concerned, I paid to eat there and I was paying Customer and it shouldn’t matter how long I was in the bathroom for because I needed to go for those purposes. The woman was very rude! If I could put -100 stars for everything, I would. I certainly would not recommend this place to anybody! And I’m making sure it goes on all my media for sure!
