Izakaya restaurant ★4.0 (41)·$50–100

6062 Lake Murray Blvd UNIT 201, La Mesa, CA 91942, USA

4.0
Food here is mediocre; the meat didn’t seem fresh or of high quality, the frying pan’s oil likely needed a refresh, and the flavors of the dishes were not well balanced. Cocktails were interesting but not sophisticated. Given the quality of this food, the dishes were extremely overpriced. We visited at 8:30 PM on a Sunday evening, and the restaurant did not have any other customers. On top of that, I did not feel welcomed by the waiter who didn’t seem amused that we walked even though we had a reservation. The bartender was friendly though. Great ambiance and relaxing vibe. - Melissa Chu

Izakaya Maíze Introduce

For those of us in California who are always on the lookout for unique and exciting culinary experiences, Izakaya Maíze in La Mesa offers a truly intriguing proposition. This isn't your traditional Japanese restaurant; it's a creative fusion concept where the refined techniques of Japanese cuisine meet the bold flavors and vibrant ingredients of Mexico. Helmed by Chef Nate Horton, Izakaya Maíze is designed as a modern, wagyu-focused izakaya, a Japanese term for a casual spot to enjoy drinks and small plates.

What sets Izakaya Maíze apart is its dedication to innovation and flavor, offering a "sharing-style or Tapas-style" menu that encourages exploration. While opinions on specific dishes can vary, many diners have been "blown away" by the "big on flavor" offerings. Imagine "Wagyu skewers," "Wagyu egg rolls," and "sliders" alongside fresh crudo, all crafted with "A5 Wagyu beef" sourced globally and seasonal local produce. Beyond the food, the "great ambiance" and "relaxing vibe," coupled with a selection of "extremely tasty" craft cocktails, promise a memorable evening. If you're a Californian eager to try something new and delightfully different in San Diego, Izakaya Maíze is definitely worth considering for a unique culinary adventure.
