IZAKAYA Taberu Japanese Restaurant Introduce
For those in California seeking a truly distinctive Japanese dining experience, IZAKAYA Taberu Japanese Restaurant offers a culinary adventure that blends authentic Tokyo flavors with a touch of Los Angeles creativity. Nestled in the dynamic Arts District, Taberu aims to provide a unique "izakaya" experience, which traditionally refers to a casual Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks, but here it evolves into a full-fledged dining destination with innovative dishes.
The name "Taberu" itself means "to eat" in Japanese, stemming from the "three major desires" (Sandaiyokkyu), with eating being paramount. This philosophy is reflected in a menu crafted by chefs directly from Tokyo, promising a culinary journey unlike any other found in LA. While it might cater to those with a "particular taste" as one reviewer noted, this often translates to inventive dishes and flavor combinations that push boundaries and delight adventurous eaters.
The ambiance at IZAKAYA Taberu aims for a "vibrant and cozy" feel, creating an inviting space for diners. While experiences can vary, many patrons highlight the wonderful service, describing servers as "incredible," "charismatic," and "attentive," even when the restaurant is bustling. This level of personalized care ensures that despite any potential wait times, the overall dining experience remains positive. The commitment to unique food is evident in dishes like their signature Yasai Maki, which features fresh vegetables wrapped in pork belly, beef, or even vegan options, all grilled to perfection and served with special dipping sauces.
From richly flavored Unagi (grilled freshwater eel) to spare ribs so tender they can be cut with chopsticks, IZAKAYA Taberu showcases a menu designed to surprise and satisfy. It’s a place for Californians looking to explore beyond the conventional, embracing a fusion of traditional Japanese techniques with modern culinary interpretations, all served with a focus on fresh ingredients and memorable tastes.
IZAKAYA Taberu Japanese Restaurant is located at 806 E 3rd St #140, Los Angeles, CA 90013, USA. This address places it squarely within the Arts District of downtown Los Angeles, a vibrant and rapidly developing neighborhood known for its creative energy, street art, galleries, and an increasing number of unique culinary establishments. Being in the Arts District positions Taberu in an area that attracts a diverse crowd seeking contemporary dining experiences.
Accessibility to IZAKAYA Taberu offers a mixed bag, typical for urban environments. For those relying on public transportation, the Arts District is served by several bus lines, and the Little Tokyo/Arts District Metro station (L Line and E Line) is within reasonable walking distance. This makes it a feasible option for many Angelenos to reach the restaurant without a car. For drivers, the restaurant does offer valet parking, which can be a significant convenience in a densely populated area like downtown LA, where street parking can be scarce. One reviewer did mention driving past a number of homeless individuals in the surrounding area, which might be a consideration for some visitors. However, the restaurant itself is within a developed section of the Arts District, and its availability of valet parking aims to mitigate direct concerns about the immediate surroundings upon arrival.
IZAKAYA Taberu provides a range of services focused on delivering a unique Japanese dining experience:
- Dine-In Service: The primary focus is on providing a full-service, in-restaurant dining experience, characterized by its "vibrant and cozy" ambiance.
- Reservations: Given its popularity and the nature of its service, making a reservation is highly recommended to minimize wait times, especially during peak hours.
- Online Ordering & Delivery: For convenience, IZAKAYA Taberu partners with various third-party delivery platforms such as DoorDash, allowing customers to enjoy their unique dishes from home or office.
- Takeout: Customers also have the option to place orders for pickup directly from the restaurant.
- Extensive Menu: Offers a wide array of Japanese dishes, from signature Yasai Maki (vegetable skewers wrapped in meat or as vegan options) to a variety of ramen, donburi (rice bowls), appetizers, and main courses.
- Unique Offerings: Specializes in dishes not commonly found elsewhere, such as their "WOW Gyu Uni Donabe" (Wagyu beef with sea urchin and ikura) and various premium A5 Wagyu preparations.
- Diverse Appetizer Selection: Features a creative list of hot and cold appetizers, including Seafood Tartar, Crispy Karaage, Nori Shio Truffle Fries, and Anago Tempura Tacos.
- Vegan Options: The menu includes dedicated vegan dishes like Vegan Ramen and "Wokin" Veggie Yakisoba, along with vegan Yasai Maki options, catering to diverse dietary needs.
- Beverage Program: Offers a selection of Japanese sake, beers, shochu, and potentially other alcoholic beverages to complement the izakaya experience, though one review noted limited drink options.
IZAKAYA Taberu stands out with several distinctive features and highlights that draw in its clientele:
- Unique Tokyo/LA Fusion Cuisine: The restaurant's core identity lies in its innovative blend of authentic Tokyo culinary traditions with a creative Los Angeles twist, offering dishes not commonly found elsewhere. Chefs direct from Tokyo ensure genuine flavors.
- Signature Yasai Maki: A standout feature, these are fresh vegetable skewers artfully wrapped in pork belly, beef, or even vegan alternatives, grilled to perfection and served with two signature dipping sauces. This concept is a cornerstone of their menu.
- Premium Protein Selection: Highlights include incredibly flavorful Unagi Hitsumabushi (grilled freshwater eel) and spare ribs so tender they "slide off the bone." They also feature A5 Premium Wagyu in various preparations.
- Attentive and Charismatic Service: Multiple reviews praise the staff, specifically mentioning servers for being "incredible," "very charismatic," and "attentive," even when the restaurant is busy. This positive interaction greatly enhances the dining experience.
- Diverse Menu Beyond Skewers: While Yasai Maki are a focus, the menu is extensive, featuring various ramen types (including Tan Tan Ramen and Vegan Ramen), innovative donabe (claypot rice dishes), crispy fried appetizers like Karaage and Nori Shio Truffle Fries, and unique sushi rolls.
- Vibrant and Cozy Ambiance: The restaurant aims for a "trendy and intimate" atmosphere, providing a welcoming backdrop for a relaxed yet exciting meal.
- Focus on Fresh Ingredients: The quality of dishes like the Unagi, described as "packed with flavor," indicates a commitment to fresh, well-prepared ingredients.
- Dessert Offerings: Provides sweet endings such as their Mochi n' Nori Maki which cleverly blends sweet and savory elements.
While specific, publicly advertised "promotions" in the traditional sense (like happy hour deals or percentage discounts) for IZAKAYA Taberu are not consistently highlighted in available information, their unique menu and quality ingredients serve as their primary draw. The restaurant's pricing falls into a more upscale casual dining category, with many main dishes and premium items reflecting the quality of ingredients like Wagyu and fresh seafood. However, the value comes from the distinctiveness of the dishes and the overall dining experience. It's common for establishments of this nature to offer seasonal specials or limited-time menu items, which diners might discover upon visiting or by checking their online presence or delivery platforms. For instance, platforms like DoorDash occasionally feature their own promotions that can apply to Taberu orders. Diners seeking the best value are encouraged to explore their diverse menu, which offers a range of price points from appetizers to premium mains, allowing for a customizable experience.

IZAKAYA Taberu Japanese Restaurant Reviews
Hi everyone,I wanted to share my recent experience at Taberu Japanese restaurant I tried out recently. Overall, I had mixed feelings about my visit. The food at the restaurant was certainly unique, catering to those with a particular taste. Our waiter was pleasant and kind, which added to the positive aspects of the visit. However, I must admit that I was disappointed with a few aspects of the experience.Despite having made a reservation, the food took an unusually long time to arrive, leading to a significant wait time. Additionally, I found the drink options to be quite limited, which was a bit of a letdown. One aspect of the location that I found off-putting was the surrounding area. To get to the restaurant, we had to drive past a large number of homeless individuals, which made me feel uncomfortable. While I don't want to speak negatively about the restaurant, I have to admit that this particular establishment may not be the right fit for me.I appreciate the experience for what it was, but I don't think I will be returning in the future.
February 03 · sean scottThe food was great. The unagi was packed with flavor. The spare ribs were soft enough to cut with chopsticks.Savior our server was incredible. Very charismatic and attentive despite the restaurant being packed.
November 03 · Pedro Rico Jr⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I had an incredible dining experience largely thanks to our server and general manager, Savior. He made us feel welcome and truly immersed us in the culture behind the cuisine. Each dish was insanely delicious thoughtfully made and presented to perfection! The sashimi and any skewer on the menu are a must.Savior took the time to explain the menu in a way that honored the traditions for each dish. His passion for the food and the overall experience made our meal feel special.I can’t recommend him and this restaurant enough. If you’re looking for a fantastic meal paired with genuine hospitality, you have to try Taberu!
October 20 · Gaby FawwazFirst time trying this Japanese fusion place and the manager, Savior, was increadible friendly, sat us at the best table next to the mural since it was available, and gave us a complete rundown of the menu based on a few dietary restrictions. We tried the garlic edamame, truffle fries, veggie roll, and bacon wrapped yakisoba. Wow everything was delicious. We will definitely be back!
June 24 · Matt BeauchampWe visited this restaurant for my mother’s birthday. The interior was beautiful, and the creative dishes were delicious, all at a relatively affordable price. The staff, in particular, were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to celebrate my mother’s birthday.I haven't encountered many restaurants in LA with such a strong sense of hospitality. I am truly grateful to all the staff. Despite having drinks for three people, the bill was fairly reasonable at around $190.If you're reading this review and considering whether to visit this restaurant, I can confidently say you won't regret it.
