Joy of Tokyo in Simpsonville is known for several key features that draw in local customers, as well as some aspects that have garnered mixed feedback:
Affordable Japanese Food: A core principle of the Joy of Tokyo chain is to provide Japanese cuisine at a budget-friendly price point, making it an accessible option for everyday meals rather than just special occasions. This value proposition is a significant draw for the Simpsonville community.
Quick Service: The restaurant's fast-casual model emphasizes efficiency. Orders, particularly for takeout, are typically prepared swiftly, which is highly valued by customers with busy schedules. This speed contributes to its suitability as a convenient lunch or dinner option.
Popular Hibachi & Teriyaki Dishes: Many customers praise specific dishes, such as the "delicious hibachi shrimp and rice." These grilled protein and rice combinations are often highlighted as consistent and satisfying choices.
Fried Calamari: A customer review specifically mentioned enjoying the "fried calamari," indicating it's a well-received appetizer option.
Crab Rangoon: Despite a lack of dipping sauce in one instance, a customer found the "Crab Rangoon was good," suggesting it's a generally solid appetizer choice.
However, it's also important to acknowledge areas where customer experiences have been less favorable, as this provides a complete picture for potential diners:
Inconsistent Flavoring: A notable concern is the perceived lack of seasoning in some dishes. One detailed review stated, "no flavor. The rice had no flavor the vegetables had no flavor. It tasted like they just cooked the food with no seasoning whatsoever.!" This suggests variability in seasoning. For instance, the "steak was cooked properly there was no flavor" comment shows quality varies.
Texture Issues in Rice: The same review mentioned "hard pieces in my rice," indicating potential issues with rice consistency.
Spring Roll Taste: A strong "taste of ginger" in a spring roll led one customer to "spit it out," suggesting this appetizer might not appeal to all palates due to its specific flavor profile.
Lack of Dipping Sauce for Crab Rangoon: The absence of dipping sauce for an item like Crab Rangoon was highlighted as a point of disappointment, affecting the overall enjoyment of the dish.
Overall Disappointment/Value: Some customers expressed "disappointed overall and wast of money," advising others not to "let the good reviews fool you seriously!" This indicates that the value proposition might not always meet customer expectations, especially if flavor is lacking.
Based on the provided customer reviews and general information about the Joy of Tokyo chain, specific, explicit promotional offers for the Simpsonville location are not detailed. However, the restaurant's operational model itself implies a consistent value proposition:
Affordable Everyday Pricing: Joy of Tokyo's fundamental strategy is to offer Japanese cuisine at an accessible price point, making it an economical choice for regular meals. Their menu prices for hibachi and teriyaki plates are designed to be competitive and generally lower than traditional full-service Japanese steakhouses.
For the most up-to-date information on any potential current promotions, daily specials, or bundle deals, local customers in Simpsonville are encouraged to:
Visit their official website: Chain restaurants often list current promotions or special offers directly on their website, or through their online ordering portals.

For residents of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Joy of Tokyo on NE Main Street serves a particular purpose within the local dining landscape, making it suitable for those with specific needs and expectations. It's a prime example of a fast-casual Japanese eatery that prioritizes convenience and affordability, distinguishing itself from more traditional or upscale Japanese restaurants in the area.
The primary appeal for locals lies in its speed and accessibility. If you're looking for a quick meal, whether it's a grab-and-go lunch during a busy workday or a convenient dinner for the family, Joy of Tokyo aims to deliver promptly. The availability of online ordering and delivery services further enhances this convenience, allowing residents to enjoy Japanese-style food without the need for extensive planning or waiting. Furthermore, for many, the restaurant offers familiar and satisfying hibachi and teriyaki dishes. The positive feedback regarding items like "delicious hibachi shrimp and rice" indicates that these core offerings can be quite enjoyable for patrons. Its status as an "affordable" option also makes it a viable choice for regular dining without breaking the bank, which is a key factor for many local families and individuals. The presence of popular appetizers like fried calamari and crab rangoon (despite occasional issues with dipping sauce) adds to the menu's appeal for quick bites.
However, it's crucial for locals to approach Joy of Tokyo with appropriate expectations. Customer reviews highlight a potential inconsistency in flavor, with some experiences noting a distinct lack of seasoning in dishes like steak, rice, and vegetables. Comments about "hard pieces in my rice" and a "very strong taste of ginger" in a spring roll also point to areas where consistency might vary. For those seeking an elevated culinary experience, complex flavor profiles, or high-quality, authentic sushi, Joy of Tokyo's fast-casual model might not fully meet those desires. Its strength lies in providing quick, accessible Japanese-style comfort food rather than gourmet dining.
In summary, Joy of Tokyo in Simpsonville is a suitable option for locals who:
Are looking for a fast and convenient Japanese meal, particularly hibachi or teriyaki.
Prioritize affordability and value in their dining choices.
Need a quick takeout solution for Japanese food.
While experiences with specific dishes like sushi or overall seasoning can be varied, for its intended purpose of providing swift and budget-friendly Japanese-inspired fare, Joy of Tokyo remains a functional and often appreciated local resource in Simpsonville.

Mar 08, 2025 · Nancy SchraderThis is my first time trying this place and never again.! I ordered the steak hibachi while my steak was cooked properly there was no flavor. The rice had no flavor the vegetables had no flavor. It tasted like they just cooked the food with no seasoning whatsoever.! I also had hard pieces in my rice.! I got a spring roll as well, took one bite and spit it out. Very strong taste of ginger I’ve had a spring roll taste like that. Crab Rangoon was good but had no dipping sauce so like I didn’t even want to eat it. Just disappointed overall and wast of money.! Don’t let the good reviews fool you seriously.!
Dec 06, 2024 · Melissa GGreat takeout experience. All the food was cooked correctly, plated well, and priced very reasonable for the serving sizes.
Jul 17, 2024 · ROBERT DickensThe rice is hit or miss. It can be over cooked or under cooked. If you call in your order, be prepared to be put on hold or listen to the phone ringing off the hook. The food is decent typically good…8 times out of 10.
Mar 05, 2025 · Jason BuckleyFirst off, I typically visit a Joy of Tokyo at least 2-3x a month. This location is TERRIBLE. My rice was obviously “old”… The food overall was literally disgusting. Balls of rice mushed together. I will not visit this location again. Augusta Rd & E North St/Pelham Rd locations are way better! 🤢
