Japanese restaurant, Asian restaurant ★4.0 (298)·$20–30

25 St Marks Pl, New York, NY 10003, USA

Absolutely loved it. Went thursday night and there was a huge line out the door. They take your name and the number of people in your party and the line moved rather quickly and we got inside.I got the agedashi tofu and it was heavenly. The tofu's seared on the outside but it was also cooked all the way through and was very soft and hot on the inside.I also ate the edamame which i liked very much and my friend got the udon noodles with chicken and said they were great as well.Staff was very nice and food arrived quickly. I wouldn't go on a thursday night again though because it was packed and really loud but that's not the establishment's fault. - Hana Ismail

This East Village institution isn't just a restaurant; it's a vibrant, sometimes chaotic, and always memorable izakaya that has captivated locals for years. Renowned for its extensive menu of Japanese street food classics, remarkably cheap drinks, and a unique atmosphere that feels straight out of a bustling Tokyo alley, KENKA offers a culinary adventure unlike any other in the city.

Despite often having a "huge line out the door," the wait at KENKA is typically "rather quick," a testament to its efficient service even amidst the crowds. Once inside, diners are met with an "absolutely loved" menu that, while perhaps "give a graphic designer a heart attack" with its sheer volume and quirky layout, offers an incredible array of choices. From "heavenly" agedashi tofu and "great" udon noodles with chicken to an overall "fabulous" atmosphere with "cheap food" and "cheap beer," KENKA delivers on its promise of a fun, satisfying, and authentically Japanese good time. The "cotton candy machine is a nice touch," adding a playful end to the meal that guarantees a "definitely be coming back" sentiment from many.
