For decades, residents across North Carolina, particularly those in the bustling city of Durham, have sought out destinations that offer not just a meal, but an experience. Kurama Japanese Seafood, located on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard, has been a familiar name in the local dining scene for over 26 years, aiming to provide that very experience. As a Japanese restaurant known for both its lively hibachi grill and its dedicated sushi bar, Kurama seeks to blend the excitement of teppanyaki-style cooking with the delicate artistry of fresh sushi.
The restaurant's longevity in the Triangle area speaks to its role as a consistent presence for those craving Japanese cuisine. It positions itself as a place where traditional Japanese sushi chefs and experienced teppanyaki chefs work to ensure a memorable visit. While individual experiences can vary, Kurama Japanese Seafood aims to be a go-to spot for locals looking for a dynamic dining atmosphere, whether they're celebrating a special occasion with a hibachi show or simply enjoying a quiet evening with sushi.
Kurama Japanese Seafood is situated at 3644 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd, Durham, NC 27707, USA. This location places it on a well-known and heavily trafficked artery connecting Durham and Chapel Hill, making it easily accessible for residents across both cities and the broader Triangle area. The boulevard is a commercial stretch, generally offering visible signage and straightforward navigation for those driving.
Being on a major thoroughfare usually means that the restaurant has dedicated parking facilities, which is a significant convenience for diners in North Carolina who typically rely on personal vehicles. The accessibility of its location helps cement Kurama as a practical choice for a range of dining occasions, from family outings to business lunches, without the complications of navigating dense urban centers. Its established presence on this key road means many locals are already familiar with its whereabouts.

This "dinner and a show" aspect is a key highlight.

Long-Standing Local Presence: Having served the Triangle area for over 26 years, Kurama has established itself as a seasoned and reliable option for Japanese cuisine. Its longevity suggests a consistent customer base and a history of providing a certain type of dining experience.

Family-Friendly Atmosphere: Many hibachi restaurants, including Kurama, are popular with families. The entertaining chefs and the variety of food options, including grilled meats and seafood, appeal to a wide age range.
Extensive Beverage Selection: Beyond food, the restaurant offers a full bar with a good selection of Japanese beers, sake, wine, and cocktails, complementing the meal options.

Kurama Japanese Seafood Reviews
If I can give a zero star, I would.Right after we enter the restaurant, the air is filled with smoke - not a nice smell from the hibachi, but burnt smell! Was thinking.. uh-oh did the chef screw up and burnt the food?!We have it a try anyway and ordered shrimp and scallops hibachi. For a $30 set, I expect to enjoy myself. Disappointment hits once food served, a chunk of burnt bean sprout on my plate. Had high hopes for the scallops (this is what I paid for right???). Scallop tasted nothing but salty! VERY VERY SALTY. Does the kitchen only has one seasoning - soy sauce?!! Shrimp is not fresh. Fried rice is tasteless.Bathroom floor and doors are sticky! How did this place get over 4.0 rating? Feel sad for people who thinks it’s ok to eat here
May 17 · Joyce YapMy son loves this place. We always get Hibachi so I can't say how the sushi is. We love the soup and salad and even have a favorite chef...his name is Nelson. In our opinion, he's the best we've had there. I've been coming here since and kid and still do now. We like the flavor better than CrapKi down the road.
May 09 · C Price (Lola)At a hibachi place I expect the rice to be cooked through at a minimum. Our rice was hard in the middle. I got the steak and shrimp, all of the ingredients were of low quality. I would rather get 1/3 of the portion of the food for a better quality and tasting meal. It was disappointing to leave a plate full of food but still feeling hungry because I could not bring myself to eat what was served.
January 25 · Uka OchirThe best Japanese I've ever had and I've ate a lot of Japanese food! I've been coming here my whole life and it will forever be my favorite! They also have gluten free soy sauce which is amazing! Wonderful cooks and Rodney is the best at the bar!
April 11 · Amanda WagnerOur first time trying this hibachi place I would say, it didn’t disappoint me in the aspect of food wise, was a big difference than other hibachi which is a good thing. I had gotten an emperor dinner. My food was cooked perfect, the food was amazing and great. My chef was an amazing person, but the waitress not the best I started with one person and ended up having another person providing our drinks, waitress was not very attentive, I didn’t see any sushi in the menu which I had to even ask if they had, which then they provided a different menu just for sushi. My drinks, sushi and food was great don’t get me wrong. I just feel the waitress should be more tentative to their table. I would recommend it just because if the food and the chef. But not for the waitress and the service I got from them.
