Japanese restaurant, Sushi restaurant ★4.0 (163)·$30–50

3758 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55409, USA

4.0
Great sushi and Japanese! Great service. I was caught off guard when there was no place to write in tip, but the server told me they get paid fairly and integrate what they would get for tips in the prices of their food. So, if the prices are steep, this is why! Food was excellent though. Tables are tight together so it’s a little cozy. But would recommend coming here! - Chrissi Prom

Kyatchi Introduce

For those in Minnesota seeking an authentic yet unique Japanese dining experience, Kyatchi on Nicollet Avenue is a spot you need to know about. This restaurant offers a refreshing departure from the ordinary, blending traditional Japanese cuisine with creative and modern twists. At Kyatchi, you can enjoy a full range of flavors, from classic, meticulously prepared sushi and sashimi to comforting bowls of ramen and even a surprising menu of Japanese-style hot dogs. It’s a place that’s both approachable for newcomers to Japanese food and exciting for seasoned diners. The atmosphere is casual, cozy, and trendy, making it a great place for a variety of occasions, whether you're dining alone, with a group of friends, or with family. Kyatchi also has a strong commitment to serving sustainably sourced seafood, a feature that many local diners appreciate.

One of the most notable things about Kyatchi, and a point of discussion among locals, is its unique approach to staff compensation. The restaurant operates on a no-tipping policy, with a universal "Hospitality Charge" built into the menu prices. This is intended to ensure fair wages for all employees, from the kitchen staff to the servers. While this may mean the menu prices appear higher upfront, it eliminates the need for guests to calculate a tip at the end of their meal. This forward-thinking model is a key part of the restaurant's identity and is something worth considering when you plan your visit.

What is worth choosing

When you visit Kyatchi, the menu offers a wealth of excellent choices, each with a unique flair. For sushi enthusiasts, the Maki Rolls are a great place to start. A popular option is the Salmon Avocado Roll. The Nigiri and Sashimi selection is also vast, with offerings like Sake (sockeye salmon) and Hamachi (yellowtail). One customer noted that they loved the "sick roll with shiso leaf with lemon juice instead of a soy sauce dipper," showcasing the creative and fresh flavors that the chefs are known for.

Beyond the sushi, Kyatchi’s menu is full of other standouts. The Kara-Age, available in both chicken and a vegetarian tofu version, is a great small plate to share. For a heartier meal, the ramen is a popular choice, with both a traditional Ramen and a Veggie Ramen option. The unique Hot Dogs are a must-try for a fun and inventive dish. The Yakisoba Dog and Avocado Dog are especially intriguing. For dessert, the Donna's Cheesecake and Ginger Panna Cotta offer a sweet and satisfying end to your meal.

It's important to be aware of the pricing and service model. As some customer reviews have noted, the prices are higher than some other sushi restaurants in the area due to their no-tipping policy, which is a choice that prioritizes staff wages. While some patrons appreciate this transparency, others have felt that the value didn't quite match the price. One review mentioned that while the service was okay, it wasn't particularly "friendly," possibly due to the flat-rate pay model. However, another customer praised the service, noting that they get paid fairly and that the food was excellent. This seems to be a mixed experience depending on the visit. Despite some mixed reviews on value, many diners praise the quality of the food and the overall experience. The restaurant's dedication to sustainable seafood and creative menu, combined with its welcoming atmosphere and excellent drink selection, makes it a unique and worthwhile dining destination in Minneapolis. The happy hour is a great way to try a variety of items at a more affordable price and get a feel for the restaurant's offerings before committing to a larger bill.
