For Californians, the vast and varied landscape of Japanese cuisine offers a constant source of culinary delight. While ramen often takes the spotlight, the comforting, chewy goodness of freshly made udon noodles holds a special place in the hearts of those who appreciate authentic Japanese comfort food. In Torrance, residents and visitors alike have the opportunity to experience the true essence of udon at Marugame Udon, a renowned Japanese chain that brings its unique "udon theatre" concept to the South Bay.
Marugame Udon is not just a restaurant; it's an experience. Rooted in the Sanuki style of udon from Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, this establishment is celebrated for its commitment to making udon noodles from scratch, right before your eyes. This dedication to freshness and traditional craftsmanship results in a bowl that is both deeply satisfying and genuinely authentic. Whether you're a seasoned udon connoisseur or new to this delightful noodle, Marugame Udon in Torrance offers a lively atmosphere and delicious food that promises to transport you straight to Japan.
Marugame Udon is conveniently situated at 21211 Hawthorne Blvd, Space D Unit 110, Torrance, CA 90503, USA. This prime location places it within a bustling commercial area, making it highly accessible for residents across Torrance and the wider South Bay region. Being located on Hawthorne Boulevard, a major thoroughfare, ensures excellent visibility and ease of navigation.
Crucially, Marugame Udon is part of a larger complex, often near shopping centers or plazas. One reviewer noted it's a "big restaurant and has a lot of seating so it was nice." Additionally, its presence often within or near family-friendly areas, like having "a playground right outside for the kids," adds to its appeal and ease of access for families.

Marugame Udon in Torrance stands out for several key features that contribute to its popularity and authentic appeal:
-
Freshly Made, Sanuki-Style Udon Noodles: This is the core appeal. The noodles are "handmade daily from three simple ingredients" (flour, water, salt) in the Sanuki style, characterized by their "soft chewy" and "al dente" texture. Watching the noodle masters prepare them in the open kitchen is a key part of the "udon theatre" experience, emphasizing freshness and craftsmanship.
-
Authentic Japanese Flavor Profiles: While some flavors might differ slightly from specific regional preferences in Japan (as noted with the curry udon being "sweet" compared to a dipping soup), the overall taste is authentic. The "Tonkotsu was really good!" and the Nikutama Udon bowl provides a "tasty broth."
-
Variety of Udon Bowls: Patrons can choose from popular options like the "Nikutama Udon" (beef, soft egg, green onions, tempura flakes), "Tonkotsu Udon" (creamy pork broth), and "Curry Udon" (Japanese curry sauce), ensuring something for every palate. Vegan options like the Tan Tan (Vegan) are also available.
-
Crispy, Fresh Tempura: The self-serve tempura bar is a major draw, offering freshly fried items like "shrimp tempura" that are "crispy" and add a customizable element to each meal. Other options include vegetable tempura and unique "knotted noodles."
-
Generous Portions and Good Value: The udon bowls are noted as "a lot of food" and "pretty decent and filling" at a reasonable price, offering excellent value for a hearty meal.
-
Spacious and Lively Dining Environment: The Torrance location is a "big restaurant" with "a lot of seating," creating a comfortable and often "lively" atmosphere. It includes both indoor and outdoor seating options.
-
Family-Friendly Amenities: The presence of "a playground right outside for the kids" makes it an ideal spot for families, allowing children to play while parents dine or after their meal.
-
Cleanliness (Mostly): While one reviewer noted a need for "proper wipe down at the edges" on their table, the overall concept and visible open kitchen generally suggest a focus on cleanliness.
While specific, rotating daily specials aren't explicitly highlighted in the provided reviews, Marugame Udon often incorporates value and special offerings into its core concept and through common restaurant practices:
-
Customization and Add-ons for Value: The self-service line allows customers to control their spending by choosing their udon size (regular or large) and adding only the tempura and sides they desire. This à la carte style implicitly allows for budget-friendly meals. Adding "extra tempura flakes" and "extra scallions" are complimentary, adding value to each bowl.
-
Loyalty Programs (Potential): As a large chain, Marugame Udon typically implements loyalty programs or offers through their app or partners (like Thanx Loyalty Program mentioned generally for the brand). Customers are encouraged to check their official website or app for sign-up bonuses or accumulated rewards.
-
Delivery Platform Deals: Marugame Udon is available on popular delivery services such as Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Grubhub. These platforms frequently offer promotions like discounts for first-time users, reduced delivery fees, or special combo deals that can make ordering in more economical.
-
Seasonal or Limited-Time Offerings: Marugame Udon often introduces seasonal udon flavors or limited-time tempura items, which, while not discounts, provide new and exciting options for returning customers. An example seen on their menu is "Teri Chicken Tartar Udon" as a "Limited Time Offer."

Marugame Udon Reviews
We just came back from Japan and was missing curry udon. It’s good and it’s a lot of food but curry wasn’t what we were expecting and it was sweet. It was a brown base curry and the one we like in Japan was yellow and it was a dipping soup so we did the noodles on the side. The tonkotsu was really good! It was a big restaurant and has a lot of seating so it was nice and a playground right outside for the kids. We also had a knotted noddle, maybe it’s good luck ;) Overall, it was a nice experience and would come back again. We been to the South coast location and it’s also nice but smaller.
May 11, 2025 · Off to see the WorldYour basic Nikutama Udon bowl (regular or large sizes) comes w soft chewy udon, a soft egg, beef shavings w onions, a scoop of green onions and a scoop of tempura flakes in a tasty broth $13.29. Pretty decent and filling. I added a shrimp tempura for $2.25 - it was crispy, a little oily but still good. Added a refreshing calamansi drink for $3.50. There is outdoor seating and ample indoor tables, and lively music. The only thing that needs attention is the table I was at needed a proper wipe down at the edges where most of the splurping juices were scattered.
Apr 10, 2025 · BeeMinerI guess I’m not much of an udon enthusiast, but the udon in this place is good and executed competently. The flavors are subtle and consist of interesting ingredients. My benchmark for a good Japanese place is the tempura and their tempura is a little greasy and not the flaky crispy standard that I hoped.
Apr 16, 2025 · PHILLFSThe fresh assortment of tempura is so delicious! The squid especially, was very flavorful and had the perfect texture. The udon broth is also very good!
Apr 30, 2025 · DillonMarugame Udon is a Japanese fast-food chain restaurant. The Torrance branch is spacious with a high ceiling. Kitchen staff is friendly and efficient. Lunch can be finished within 30minutes. Food is reasonably priced and of great quality. Highly recommend the popular Nikutama (USD 12.55/Regular; USD 13.95/Large)! While the freshly made udon is al dente, the onzen egg is silky smooth!
