This Japanese restaurant chain, known globally as Marugame Seimen in Japan, brings the cherished tradition of Sanuki-style udon directly to your bowl. Forget pre-packaged noodles; at Marugame Udon, the entire process, from kneading the dough to slicing the noodles, happens right before your eyes in their open kitchen. Marugame Udon is more than just a place to eat; it's a journey into the heart of Japanese comfort food, offering a simple yet profoundly satisfying meal. Beyond the signature udon, the restaurant also features a popular self-serve tempura bar, allowing diners to customize their meals with an array of freshly fried, crispy delights. This article will delve into what makes Marugame Udon a standout choice for Japanese cuisine in Glendale, covering its convenient location, the services it provides, its unique highlights, and how it caters to the local Californian palate.
---Marugame Udon is strategically located at **1318 Galleria Way, Glendale, CA 91210, USA**. This address places it squarely within the bustling **Glendale Galleria**, a major shopping destination in the region. Its location within a large mall offers both advantages and considerations for accessibility.
One of the primary benefits of being in the Glendale Galleria is the abundance of parking. While direct street parking might be limited in the immediate vicinity, the mall provides extensive parking structures, making it relatively easy for visitors to find a spot, even if it requires a short walk through the mall to reach the restaurant. This is a significant convenience for those driving from various parts of Glendale and surrounding areas. The mall environment also means it's well-connected by public transportation, offering various bus routes that stop nearby, making it accessible even for those without a car.
The Glendale Galleria is a hub of activity, which means Marugame Udon benefits from high foot traffic and is often a go-to spot for shoppers looking for a quick and satisfying meal. However, this popularity can also lead to busy periods, especially during peak dining hours. While the location provides excellent accessibility and amenities like restrooms within the mall building, it’s worth noting that the restaurant itself maintains a more focused, cafeteria-style setup, which might influence the overall dining experience for some. Nevertheless, its integration within a major commercial center ensures it's a visible and convenient option for many locals.
---Marugame Udon is known for its unique, cafeteria-style service model that prioritizes freshness and customization. Here's a breakdown of the services offered:
- Dine-In Experience: Guests walk through a line, first selecting their desired udon bowl from a variety of broth and topping options. The noodles are handmade daily and cooked fresh on the spot.
- Self-Serve Tempura Bar: A distinctive feature is the self-serve tempura section, where freshly fried tempura items (like shrimp, sweet potato, squid, and various vegetables) are continuously prepared. Customers can pick and choose their preferred items to accompany their udon.
- Customization Options: After receiving their udon, diners can further customize their bowls with complimentary toppings such as green onions and tempura flakes. Additional paid add-ons like sweet beef, soft-boiled eggs, and various broths are also available.
- Takeout Service: Marugame Udon offers takeout, though it's important for customers to note that the soup and noodles are typically mixed together for convenience unless specified. Some customers have expressed a preference for broth separation for takeout to maintain noodle texture and temperature, so it may be advisable to confirm this option when ordering for pickup.
- Beverage Selection: A range of drinks, including Japanese teas like Oolong and Green Tea, as well as soft drinks, are available to complement your meal.
- Rice Bowls: In addition to udon, they also offer various rice bowls like Chicken Katsu Curry and Beef Gyudon, providing alternatives for those who prefer rice.
- No-Contact Dining Options: For those who prefer minimal contact, Marugame Udon is available through various delivery platforms, offering a convenient way to enjoy their food at home.
Marugame Udon stands out in the Glendale dining scene due to several unique features and highlights that contribute to its popularity and authentic Japanese appeal:
- Handmade Sanuki-Style Udon: The cornerstone of Marugame Udon is its commitment to authentic Sanuki-style udon noodles. These thick, chewy noodles are made fresh daily on-site from three simple ingredients – flour, water, and salt. Customers can often observe the noodle-making process through the open kitchen, highlighting the restaurant's dedication to freshness and transparency. This fresh preparation results in a superior texture and taste that sets it apart from many other udon offerings.
- "Theater Kitchen" Concept: The open-kitchen design allows diners to witness the entire udon preparation process, from the kneading of the dough to the boiling of the noodles. This "theater kitchen" concept not only assures customers of the freshness of their meal but also provides an engaging and immersive dining experience.
- Freshly Fried Tempura Bar: A major highlight is the self-serve tempura bar. A wide array of crispy tempura items, from classic shrimp and various vegetables to more unique options like tamagoyaki (sweet egg omelet) and potato croquettes, are fried continuously and served hot. This allows diners to pick and choose their favorites, creating a customized meal experience.
- Consistent Quality: Despite being a chain, many customers consistently praise the quality of the udon noodles and the overall taste, noting that it brings them back to their experiences in Japan. This consistency across locations is a strong indicator of their adherence to traditional preparation methods.
- Affordable and Quick Service: Marugame Udon is often highlighted as a great option for a quick, affordable, and satisfying meal. The cafeteria-style setup allows for efficient service, making it a popular choice for lunch breaks or casual dinners where speed and value are appreciated.
- Customizable Bowls: The ability to choose your udon base (like Nikutama, Tonkotsu, or Curry), add various tempura items, and then further customize with complimentary toppings like scallions and tempura flakes, means every meal can be tailored to individual preferences.
- Comfort Food Appeal: Many reviewers describe Marugame Udon as the "perfect comfort food," especially with its warm, flavorful broths and chewy noodles, offering a taste of home-style Japanese cooking.

Marugame Udon Reviews
Udon tastes the same as the last time I visited when it first opened. Been years since I visited. Seems like toppings and tempura options are smaller than before but noodles are still consistently good!
May 30, 2025 · Carmie GonzalesI was really excited to try this place because it’s close to home and I love Udon. Not much of a social person so I ordered for to go. The takeout experience is awful, you get your soup mixed in which means by the time you get home it will be cold and soggy. You get your togo (open) container in a tray and walk towards the register to pay. There is a “you can grab your own buffet like style” tempura and stuff which I don’t think it’s sanitary. And after I payed $40 something plus dollars and tip I don’t even get the lady to put my food in a bag. She pointed to a table in the back where I can grab my own lids, sauce and silverware. There was no bags so I had to bother her again and almost spilled my food trying to put it in the bag. Disaster. I’m not returning not recommending.
Mar 29, 2025 · Marcela FloresThe udon is made fresh at this place, which is nice. But, the restaurant doesn’t look too clean and tidy. I would have liked it if the tempura assortment was placed inside the glass case, and not within the customer’s reach for sanitary reasons. While I did enjoy the food, I think the overall presentation of the food and the place could have been a lot better.
Jan 25, 2025 · CcGot a simple beef udon and tempura for dinner. While eating the udon, I wish I had ordered a gyudon bowl instead but if I ordered gyudon bowl I would be thinking of ordering beef udon intead. I really liked the side tempura, especially the curry croquet one. Too much sodium but worth the experience once in a while.
Apr 26, 2025 · P C (Cosmic Horror Romance)Marugame has become my go-to for a quick meal when I’m shopping and craving a hot bowl of noodle soup. It really hits the spot in the winter! Every location I’ve been to (Sawtelle, Santa Anita, DTLA/The Bloc) has been consistent in quality and service, this one included. Noodles are fresh, broth is rich but not too salty, regular size is plenty filling with a generous amount of toppings. Food is prepared fast, there’s lots of seating, nice ambiance/decor, and the people are always friendly. The prices are decent too. Definitely recommend!
