Matsuri is conveniently located at **5759 Bird Rd, Miami, FL 33155, USA**. This address places it squarely in a bustling, yet somewhat unassuming, strip mall area, making it easily accessible for residents across Miami, especially those in the Coral Terrace, Westchester, and West Miami neighborhoods. This convenience allows you to plan your visit or takeout order efficiently, though they do note there may be brief wait times during peak hours even with a reservation.
- Extensive Japanese Menu: Matsuri boasts a wide array of Japanese dishes beyond just sushi, including hot entrees like Chicken Teriyaki, Salmon Teriyaki, Steak Teriyaki (Ribeye), Tonkatsu, and various Tempura dishes. They also offer ramen, donburi (rice bowls), and a variety of appetizers and vegetables.
- Special "Secret" Menu: For Japanese speakers or those "in the know," there's a special menu in Japanese that reportedly holds unique, non-traditional gems not found on the regular English menu. This adds an exclusive touch for a more authentic experience.
---
Matsuri has cultivated a strong reputation for several key features and highlights that make it a local favorite and a standout in the Miami Japanese dining scene.
- Authentic Japanese Flavor: This is perhaps Matsuri's strongest selling point. Customers consistently praise it for delivering "real Japanese flavor" that sets it apart from more Americanized or "flashy" establishments. It's where the Japanese community in Miami reportedly goes to eat sushi, a strong endorsement of its authenticity.
- Exceptional Sushi and Sashimi Quality: The fish quality is frequently lauded. Specific mentions include:
- Tomo Tomo: Described as "Game over. It’s elite. Every bite is a reminder that this ain’t your average sushi spot." This is a must-try for regulars.
- Toro (Fatty Tuna): Praised for melting "like butter," indicating its premium quality and freshness.
- Hamachi (Yellowtail): Noted for being "clean, rich, and smooth—it hits every time. They don’t miss."
- Humble and Consistent Excellence: Despite its top-tier quality, Matsuri maintains a "humble" and "no ego" vibe. It's celebrated for its consistency over the years, staying "classic, and absolutely undefeated" even as new competitors emerge.
- "Hidden Gem" Status: Many patrons view Matsuri as a cherished secret, a "sushi snobs' hidden gem" that "still flies under the radar while serving straight fire." This adds to its allure and sense of exclusivity for regulars.
- Local Institution: Having "been holding it down for years," Matsuri is considered the "sushi OG of South Miami" and is seen as "family" by its long-time patrons.
- Welcoming and "Chill" Staff: Even with potential wait times, the staff is described as "super chill, always showing love, making you feel like a regular even if it’s your first time." This contributes to the overall positive dining experience.
- Value for Quality: While not necessarily cheap, many reviews suggest that the pricing is "reasonable for the quality of food offered," and offers "South Beach-quality sushi at ultra-bargain prices" compared to more upscale venues.
- Beyond Sushi: While sushi is a highlight, their menu extends to other Japanese dishes such as Chicken and Beef Teriyaki, Ramen, Tempura, and unique appetizers like the beef sashimi carpaccio, offering a comprehensive Japanese culinary experience.
It is important to note, however, that while many reviews are overwhelmingly positive, there is a contrasting recent review that describes a significant decline in food quality, particularly fish freshness and cut, as well as an increase in prices. This review also mentions a severe concern regarding food safety due to a video showing worms in fish. Prospective diners should be aware of this contrasting feedback and may consider verifying recent quality and safety standards.

Based on the available information, Matsuri does not widely advertise ongoing special promotions or explicit discount offers in the provided reviews or general public data. Their reputation seems to be built more on consistent quality and authenticity rather than promotional deals. However, it's common for Japanese restaurants, especially those with a loyal local following, to have unspoken specials or seasonal offerings.
While not confirmed, potential types of promotions or unique offerings that Matsuri *might* have, or that you could inquire about, include:
- Lunch Specials: Many Japanese restaurants offer more affordable lunch sets or bento boxes during midday hours, which can be a great way to experience their cuisine at a lower price point.
- "Go-To-Go Special": One review mentions a "Go-To-Go Special" (likely "Go To Ren Special" from the menu) which is a large platter of sushi and sashimi designed for groups. While not a discount, it's a value-driven offering for multiple diners, allowing guests to sample a wide array of their best items.
- Seasonal Fish/Omakase Offerings: Authentic Japanese restaurants often feature seasonal fish that may not be on the regular menu. Inquire about any chef's specials or omakase (chef's choice) options for a unique culinary journey.
- Holiday or Event-Based Specials: Like many local establishments, Matsuri might introduce special menus or limited-time promotions around major holidays or local events.
- Hidden Menu Items: As mentioned, there's a "special menu in Japanese for Japanese speakers" with "non-traditional gems." While not a promotion, access to these exclusive items can feel like a special offer for those who can navigate it.
For the most accurate and current information on any promotions or unique culinary experiences, it's always best to call Matsuri directly at their listed phone number or check their official website or social media channels if they have them. Since they are a local spot with a dedicated following, word-of-mouth or in-person inquiry might also reveal insights into any unadvertised specials.

Matsuri stands out as an exceptionally suitable Japanese restaurant for locals in the Florida region, particularly those in Miami, for a multitude of compelling reasons. Firstly, its long-standing presence and consistent quality have cemented its status as a **community staple**. This isn't a fleeting trend; it's a place that has "been holding it down for years," earning the trust and loyalty of its patrons. For locals, this consistency means a reliable source of high-quality Japanese cuisine, a comforting familiarity in an ever-changing culinary landscape.
The emphasis on **authentic Japanese flavor** is a huge draw. In a city where many restaurants cater to broader palates, Matsuri offers the "real" deal, a testament to its dedication to traditional techniques and ingredients. This appeals directly to those who appreciate genuine culinary experiences and aren't looking for an overly Westernized interpretation. The praise for its **Toro and Hamachi**, and the almost legendary status of the "Tomo Tomo" roll, speak volumes about the caliber of its fresh fish and expert preparation.
Furthermore, Matsuri embodies a **humble excellence**. It’s not about flashy decor or an inflated "experience" but purely about the food. This unpretentious atmosphere resonates with locals who value substance over style, preferring a place where the focus remains squarely on the culinary craft. Even the occasional wait is seen as part of the "ritual," building anticipation for a truly rewarding meal – a sign that locals understand and appreciate its value. The staff's "super chill" and welcoming demeanor also contributes to a feeling of being "family," fostering a warm, inviting environment that encourages repeat visits.
While a recent review highlights concerns about declining quality and food safety, the overwhelming majority of long-standing positive feedback indicates that Matsuri has historically been a beacon of high standards. For those seeking a Japanese dining experience that prioritizes genuine taste, consistent quality, and a deeply rooted presence within the community, Matsuri remains a compelling choice. It's the kind of place you're almost hesitant to share, precisely because it feels like *your* local secret—a true gem that has earned its reputation as the "sushi OG of South Miami."

Matsuri Reviews
I’m lowkey breaking the code even writing this, but credit where credit’s due. Matsuri, off Bird Road in that lil’ strip mall—you already know if you’re from around here. This place has been holding it down for years, and somehow it still flies under the radar while serving straight fire. This is some of the best sushi in Miami. Forget the flashy Brickell joints with their overpriced “experience” and vibes-for-the-’Gram. Matsuri is where you go when you want that real Japanese flavor. You slide in, sit down, and if you know what’s up—you order the Tomo Tomo. That thing right there? Game over. It’s elite. Every bite is a reminder that this ain’t your average sushi spot. The Toro? Melts like butter. The Hamachi? Clean, rich, and smooth—it hits every time. They don’t miss. And the best part? The quality is top-tier but the vibe stays humble. No ego, just excellence.Yeah, there’s usually a wait, but that’s part of the ritual. It builds the anticipation. And when your name finally gets called, it’s go time. The staff? Super chill, always showing love, making you feel like a regular even if it’s your first time. With all these new sushi joints popping up left and right, trying to do too much, Matsuri stays consistent, classic, and absolutely undefeated. It’s the sushi OG of South Miami. It’s family. So yeah—I probably shouldn’t be putting this out there. But if you know, you know. Just don’t blow up the spot too much. Let the real ones keep eating in peace.
Apr 12, 2025 · Brett AbessI used to love Matsuri, but it’s gone way downhill. The food quality has dropped a lot — especially the fish. Cuts are super thick and sloppy now, and it just doesn’t taste fresh like it used to. Prices have gone up too, which makes it even worse. You’re paying more for way less quality. What really pushed me over the edge is seeing a video online showing worms in the fish — seriously, that’s unacceptable. I can’t recommend this place anymore. If you care about food safety or quality sushi, go somewhere else.
May 24, 2025 · Leticia AlbarranSo disappointed. I won’t be returning back to matsuri. All started with our waitress displaying a noticeable lack of enthusiasm. She avoided eye contact and seemed bothered by our presence, making us feel uncomfortableWhen the food arrived we discovered a long black hair in one of the sushi pieces. When we politely asked our waitress to remove the contaminated sushi and bring the check, she seemed put off. To our surprise, she still charged us for the entire meal, minus only one sushi piece which we didn’t touch nor drink anything as we wanted to leave.Unfortunately, Matsuri has taken a significant step backward. The decline in service quality and attention to detail is striking. Unless they revamp their service standards, I would not recommend Matsuri to others.
Jan 17, 2025 · Yessica GarciaI absolutely love this sushi spot! It's become a cherished tradition for my dad and me to visit, and we always leave feeling satisfied and happy. The quality of the food is consistently impressive, from the melt-in-your-mouth otoro to the fresh, flavorful salmon. Every bite is a delight, showcasing the skill and care that goes into each dish. The atmosphere is also inviting, making it a perfect place to enjoy a meal together. I highly recommend coming here if you're looking for top-notch sushi—it's truly a gem!
Sep 18, 2024 · Paula AndreaExcellent restaurant with delicious food and very fair prices. The lunch sushi box is a great deal and it's a delicious option.Parking is easy and free. The service is quick and very professional. It's a very popular option in this area of Miami.
