MENSHO Introduce
For ramen enthusiasts throughout California, especially those in the vibrant Bay Area, the name MENSHO carries significant weight. Hailing directly from Japan, MENSHO has established itself as a beacon of authentic, high-quality ramen, making a significant impact on the local culinary scene. Its Oakland location offers a truly exceptional dining experience, distinguished by its dedication to traditional ramen-making techniques, including the crucial art of hand-making their noodles.
MENSHO is not just a ramen restaurant; it’s an experience crafted with passion and precision. The difference, as many patrons attest, lies in the details—from the incredibly flavorful broths, meticulously prepared to perfection, to the fresh, bouncy texture of their handmade noodles. While the San Francisco location has long been a favorite, the Oakland outpost offers a slightly larger menu and a cozier ambiance, proving it's equally capable of delivering that unforgettable, authentic ramen taste that loyal customers have come to expect. Whether you're a seasoned ramen connoisseur or new to the world of Japanese noodle soups, MENSHO provides a culinary journey that truly stands out.
MENSHO is conveniently situated at
4258 Piedmont Ave, Oakland, CA 94611, USA
. This puts it in the heart of Oakland's charming and highly walkable Piedmont Avenue district, known for its array of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. The location is easily accessible for residents across Oakland and from neighboring East Bay communities.Piedmont Avenue is well-connected by local bus routes, making public transportation a viable option for getting to MENSHO. For those driving, street parking is available in the vicinity, though as with many popular areas in Oakland, it can sometimes require a bit of patience to find a spot, especially during peak dining hours. However, the inviting atmosphere of Piedmont Avenue itself, coupled with the promise of exceptional ramen, often makes the parking search a minor consideration for many eager diners. The restaurant's slightly smaller and cozier nature, as noted by patrons, contributes to its intimate appeal, though it also means there might be a wait, particularly during busy times.
MENSHO is dedicated to providing a focused and high-quality ramen dining experience. Here's what you can expect:

MENSHO stands out in the California ramen scene for several compelling reasons, earning it widespread acclaim:
- Handmade Noodles: This is a defining feature and a major highlight. The fact that MENSHO hand-makes its noodles in-house makes a significant difference in texture, chew, and overall quality, elevating the ramen experience considerably. This commitment to traditional craftsmanship is a rare find.
- Exceptional Broth Quality: Reviewers consistently rave about the richness and depth of flavor in MENSHO's broths. They are described as "so flavorful" and "incredibly rich," indicating a meticulous and lengthy preparation process that yields superior results.

- Diverse and Innovative Menu: While maintaining authenticity, MENSHO is not afraid to innovate. Their menu features unique offerings like the Matcha Duck Ramen and Spicy Lamb Miso Ramen, showcasing creativity while retaining high quality. The presence of multiple vegan ramen options with distinct broths is also a significant highlight.
- Cozy Ambiance and Solo Diner Section: The Oakland location offers a more intimate and inviting atmosphere compared to some larger counterparts. The thoughtful inclusion of a dedicated section for solo diners is a big plus for those eating alone, enhancing the overall comfort.
- Fresh Wasabi: A small but significant detail mentioned by one reviewer is the "incredibly fresh" wasabi served with appetizers, highlighting their attention to even the smallest components of the meal.
- Crispy Enoki Chips: These are noted as a delicious appetizer, perfect for enjoying on their own or for adding an extra layer of flavor to the ramen broth by dipping them in.
While specific, ongoing promotional offers for MENSHO in Oakland are not widely detailed in public reviews, their commitment to a high-quality, authentic experience often speaks for itself, driving consistent customer traffic. Ramen restaurants of this caliber typically focus on the integrity of their ingredients and preparation, rather than frequent discounts. However, it's always a good idea for local patrons to:
- Check their official website (menshopiedmont.com): Restaurants sometimes announce seasonal specials, new menu items, or limited-time offerings directly on their site.
- Follow their social media channels: Any short-term promotions, special ramen bowls, or events would likely be announced here.
- Inquire directly: When visiting or calling, asking about any current specials or loyalty programs is always an option. Some establishments might offer a "Become a VIP" option via their website, which could lead to exclusive offers.
Given the occasional wait times, particularly for a smaller, popular spot like MENSHO, the value is often seen in the quality of the food and the authentic experience rather than overt promotional deals. Their reputation for being "the best ramen" often serves as its own promotion.

MENSHO Reviews
The best ramen I’ve ever had in my life! Mensho is from Japan and they hand make the noodles themselves and it makes such a difference! In addition the broth is so flavorful! They have quite a few vegan ramens as well with different broth flavors. Theres often a wait but to be expected as this is a smaller restaurant.
April 21 · JMensho has always been my go-to ramen spot whenever I’m in the Bay Area. Im a regular at the San Francisco location, but this was my first time trying the Oakland spot— def didn’t disappoint. The menu is a bit larger but the staples are the same.I started with the garlic tuna hand roll and enoki chips. The hand roll came unrolled, which was a unique touch, I guess we assemble it ourselves? I can roll with it (lol). The presentation was great, and the wasabi was incredibly fresh—8.7/10.The enoki chips were crispy and flavorful as always. I’m not a fan of too much lemon garnish, but that’s just personal preference. I like saving a few crisps to dip in my broth at the end for an extra layer of flavor—8/10.For my main dish, I tried the Matcha Duck Ramen (yes, matcha!). The broth was thick, creamy, and surprisingly well-balanced—the matcha flavor was subtle without being overpowering but if you absolutely hate matcha, avoid it. I probably wouldn’t order it again but def would recommend it to anyone who loves matcha—7.2/10.The Spicy Lamb Miso Ramen is the vibe. The broth was rich and flavorful, the noodles had the perfect bounce, and the spice level was just right. I’d recommend adding an egg to elevate it even more, though that’s a personal preference. This bowl is as close to authentic ramen as I’ve had outside Japan—9.6/10.The Oakland location’s ambiance is cozier and more inviting than the SF location. While there’s no bar seating, they do have a designated section for solo diners, which I appreciated.
February 26 · Ali Azizi4/26 update - second visitI was a bit disappointed this time, it makes me feel the shrinkflation compare to last time. The service the broth is still good, just they changed the signature menu, and the quality and size of the meat is not as good as before .The signature ramen is so goooood. The noodle feels like handmade. I love the duck and wagu. We also tried the chicken karaage, very crispy and juicy!
April 27 · Judy JiangWe ordered the beef tartare, garlic fried chicken and then the garlic ramen and cumin lamb ramen. Food was OUTSTANDING, best Ramen we’ve ever had. I’d been to the SF location before and the ramen, atmosphere and whole experience at the Piedmont location was significantly better (and I came here because I remember how great the ramen was at the SF one). Our server, Anushka was friendly, helpful and overall just wonderful and a joy to be around. We will be back next time we visit Oakland.
May 25 · Caroleen JakmianWe went a little after lunch time on a Sunday. We were seated immediately but our server was a bit overloaded. The spicy lamb was fantastic. Also the wagyu jerk hand roll. I have not had good experience with most Bay Area restaurants that have a lot of hype but I was very satisfied.
