Mokutanya Introduce
For those in California seeking an Asian dining experience that transcends the ordinary, Mokutanya in Burlingame stands out as a truly exceptional destination. This acclaimed restaurant specializes in yakitori (grilled skewers) and Japanese tapas, offering a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere that makes it perfect for a memorable evening. Mokutanya isn't just a place to eat; it's an immersive culinary journey where thoughtful preparation, fresh ingredients, and a unique ambiance combine to create an experience that truly "blows you away."
Mokutanya has quickly gained a reputation for nailing it in "so many different ways," surprising even seasoned diners with its quality and attention to detail. Unlike many yakitori places where skewers might taste similar, at Mokutanya, "every skewer has its own statement to make," showcasing distinct flavors and expert marination. This dedication to individuality in each dish, from appetizers to main courses, ensures a dynamic and engaging meal. While it’s noted that portions for skewers can be a bit small, encouraging guests to order around "10+ between 2 adults," the quality and distinctiveness make it well worth the experience.
Beyond the food, Mokutanya excels in creating a distinctive atmosphere. It's described as a "quiet and dark joint," with an ambiance that "screams date night." The restaurant is meticulously designed to provide an intimate setting, even featuring "glass separation" between seats to facilitate quiet conversation despite the surrounding bustle. Crucially for a yakitori establishment, they grill behind glass in a kitchen, ensuring that "fumes are barely noticeable" and your clothes remain fresh. This thoughtful approach to the dining environment elevates Mokutanya beyond a casual eatery, positioning it as a prime choice for special occasions or simply a sophisticated night out.
Mokutanya is conveniently located at 1155 California Dr, Burlingame, CA 94010, USA. This address places it firmly in the vibrant downtown area of Burlingame, a charming city renowned for its dining and shopping scene within the larger Bay Area. Its central position makes it easily accessible for residents across the Peninsula and beyond. California Drive is well-connected, and the restaurant is "right across from the Broadway Station" for Caltrain (weekends only), and the SamTrans 292 bus stops directly in front of the small shopping plaza where Mokutanya is situated. For those driving, there is "on-site parking lot" availability, as well as "metered street parking along California Dr. and Broadway Ave," and a "metered parking lot on Chula Vista Ave." This multitude of transportation and parking options ensures that reaching Mokutanya is convenient, allowing guests to focus on enjoying their exceptional meal.
The interior of Mokutanya is specifically designed to create a romantic and intimate setting. With "16 low sunken tables with leg wells," all separated by "glass partitions," the restaurant provides a sense of privacy even amidst a lively crowd. This design is highly conducive to deep conversation and a relaxed dining pace, making it ideal for date nights or smaller, focused gatherings. The commitment to minimizing smoke and scent from the grilling process (by having it done behind glass) is a significant feature that enhances comfort and allows diners to fully appreciate the ambiance without worrying about their clothing. It’s an environment crafted for an elevated experience, distinguishing it from more casual dining spots.

Mokutanya Reviews
I'm writing this review based on my second visit, which was different from the first. During my first visit, the service was quick, and the food was delicious and on point. However, my recent visit was not as great. The edamame was excessively salty, and the salt wasn't mixed well with it. Most of the food we ordered was also salty. Additionally, the ramen we ordered did not arrive on time, so we eventually asked them to pack it to-go. They mentioned two or three times that it was on the way, but the service wasn't as efficient as during our first visit.Overall, it was a disappointing night, and the experience felt off. Despite this, I’m still willing to give them another chance.
Feb 18, 2025 · Myla Marie CookMokutanya nails it in so many different ways and we were blown away by the thoughtfulness and the quality of the food that we were surprised to have only discovered this joint only now.Let's take this in a few angles. The ambience screams date night. This isn't a family, bring your kids type of place. This is a quiet and dark joint for impressing your date and having a conversation. So what does one worry to take your date to a yakitori place? Smoke and the scent bearing on your flashy clothes. Not at Mokutanya. They grill it behind the glass in a kitchen and the fumes are barely noticeable. Furthermore, each seat has a glass separation so that you can actually have a quiet conversation even with the bustle of the crowd. The food is amazing. From the appetizers like the croquette and hamchi carpaccio, to the various skewers you'll order, every one of them had fresh ingredients and was tastefully marinated. Many times, yakitori places suffer from each and every skewer tasting exactly the same with just different meat texture. Not at Moku. Every skewer has its own statement to make. Prepare to order around 10+ between 2 adults as the portions could be a bit small. Some the side dishes are mindblowing. Try the cold ramen or the chicken skewer donburi with kimchee. They could easily be a dish on its own. And despite being side fares, we were really happy about the quantity and the quality. And yes, plenty of choics of various sake - and we were very appreciative of making available cheaper varieties as well. And yes, there are extremely expensive junmai daiginjos if you choose to go there as well. Healthy selection of beer and cocktail and you really cannot ask for more.My only ask would be to upgrade their menus from simple text to also carry some images or a picture book. If you don't know what to order or how much, it is very difficult to feel like you are making smart choices or ordering enough. It really makes you think. But most likely, anything you do order will be great so there's some comfort in that.Mokutanya is the star of Burlingame downtown. Make sure to reserve ahead as even a week or two earlier as seats run out quick. Absolutely phenomenal experience and would love to return frequently.Yes, yes. It is not cheap. It's going to cost around $100 per person including tip. But again, you are getting an experience that is difficult to match in the Bay Area.
Feb 17, 2025 · Wook ChungExtra points for an unforgettable culinary journey! It felt like a mini trip to Japan, with incredible food while experiencing the Japanese culture and dining traditions.
Jan 25, 2025 · Aayushi TrivediWhat a unique dinning experience. Host clarified to not park in the back but the spots that face the restaurant should be good. Anyways, we were sat down to a designated space, each dinning table was separated by glass and before stepping into the dinning table you take off your shoes and are given a cushion to sit. It was fun bc you sit on the floor like how they do in Japan. But we came to find out after the meal that there’s space under the table for you to sit normal and stretch your legs. Now for the food! They had interesting meat selections, really outside of a general selections. We had ramen and for vegetarian we thought we’d be out of luck but they had vegetarian skewers and you can request to remove the meat from the ramen. Our server was kind enough to suggest tofu in place of meat and so I took the offer. 😊Nigori yuzu was delicious, I practically finished the entire thing but it was so good and refreshing. Overall what a unique experience!
May 31, 2024 · Grace AWe arrived later in the day with no reservation and they were able to accommodate us. The staff was welcoming and kind and attentive the entire time with excellent attention to detail. Everything was cooked to perfection. It's a great place to try a bunch of different food items. Including exotic meats! Highly recommend the chicken with honey.
