When you visit Okome House, the menu offers a wealth of delicious options, but there are a few that truly stand out. The onigiri are a non-negotiable choice. They are praised for their fresh and authentic flavors, with a vast selection of fillings that cater to every preference. From the savory Unagi (freshwater eel) and Karaage (fried chicken) to the simple yet perfect Shio (salt), you can easily create a meal by mixing and matching several different kinds. The Onigiri Combo Meal, which includes a choice of three onigiri and a side, is a great value for a filling and flavorful meal.
For a more substantial meal, the Donburi rice bowls are a fantastic option. The Tori Don (chicken rice bowl) and Buta Don (pork rice bowl) are both customer favorites, featuring tender meat in a sweet and savory sauce served over rice. The addition of a fried egg is a highly recommended upgrade that adds richness to the dish. The Curry Don is another popular choice, offering a hearty and comforting Japanese curry over rice, with a vegan option available.
The Udon dishes are another star of the menu. The house-made vegetarian broth is light, flavorful, and incredibly comforting, making it a perfect base for any of the udon options. The Shrimp Tempura Udon is a classic for a reason, offering a satisfying crunch to complement the soft noodles and warm broth. The Kitsune Udon, with its sweet fried tofu pockets, is a comforting and delicious vegan choice.
In addition to the main courses, the Osozai (small plates) are perfect for sharing or for a lighter bite. The Tori Karaage (fried chicken) is a must-try, described by a customer as "crispy, golden, and coated with a miso-soy glaze," a perfect appetizer. The Miso soup is a classic that complements any meal, and the Agedashi Tofu is a great vegetarian option.
Finally, don't miss out on the desserts. Okome House offers imported rotating desserts that provide a sweet finish to your meal. The Taiyaki (a fish-shaped waffle with a red bean or chocolate filling) is a delightful and authentic Japanese treat. The Soft Serve ice cream is also a popular choice, especially on a warm day.

Okome House Reviews
If you’re looking for a cozy spot with seriously good Japanese comfort food, Okome House in South Minneapolis is it. Tucked into the Longfellow neighborhood, this place serves up all the good stuff—onigiri, donburi, udon—and does it really well.We tried three dishes: Tori Karaage (fried chicken) – Crispy, golden, and coated with a miso-soy glaze. Juicy thigh meat inside, crunchy outside, and the green onions on top gave it just the right pop of flavor.Shrimp Tempura Udon – The broth here is light and comforting, the kind you want to sip until the bowl is empty. The udon noodles were chewy and fresh, and the shrimp tempura added that perfect crunch.Buta Don (pork rice bowl) – This one felt like Japanese comfort food. Tender pork in a sweet garlicky glaze, served over rice with ginger and green onions. The vibe inside matches the food: casual, welcoming, and super easy to order at the counter. No reservations, no fuss, just good food in a laid-back setting.Overall, Okome House is one of those neighborhood gems you want to keep coming back to. If you’re in the Twin Cities and craving Japanese comfort food that feels both fresh and authentic, this is the place.
August 24 · Corey TravelWonderful food experience! Food, service, and atmosphere were all A+. My first time and they were so patient explaining all the dishes, etc. Definitely will be back often! 🔥❤️ (Pics: Onigiri combo, Tori Karaage, Tori Don, Taiyaki with mochi ice cream)
August 23 · MelissaI think the establishment's strength is onigiri because they not only have a variety of different toppings, but also have reasonable prices that would allow economical planning. Since it is located in a residential area, I can see how people who live around South Minneapolis can easily visit for a quick bite.As much as the onigiri had good flavor, I felt like other dishes were more mediocre. For example, the Buta Don had pork that texturally didn't go well with the rice because it wasn't a part of the pig that was the most tender or succulent. The chicken karaage had too much creamy sauce and the chicken itself didn't have as much flavor, as much as it was juicy. I would recommend visitors to capitalize on its onigiri supplies for the most part.A positive aspect I would mention was that I found the sakeru gummy and nagai sakeru gummy (long long man) in the store, and I instantly got it and made a video of myself tearing up the candy. I loved that for sure.
December 26 · Jay ShenThey had very good Donburi and I also liked the Japanese snacks that they sold by the counter. The atmosphere was very nice with all the plants and other stuff. It’s also very conveniently placed as it is a short walk from the Route 7, 9, 74 and A Line Bus
February 04 · Louis JohnsonAfter living in Japan for 14 years (2009-2023), I have to say that OkomeHouse’s food is the most legit (and best) Japanese food I’ve had in the Midwest. We had edamame, miso shiro soup, atsuage dashi tofu, and takana, yuzu salmon, and une Shoshone onigiri!
