Japanese restaurant ★4.0 (5)·$10–20

I came here to try their rice balls, I ordered the shrimp avocado onigri and there was literally still poop inside the shrimp, which shows that they don't clean before cooking. They also laughed about it instead of showing concern. I was going to let it go, but then I ordered the miso onigri and it was literally ice cold and had a strange texture. The server did alarm me that they would refund, but I had to call my bank and dispute because the refund never came. This place is very dirty and shady, I don't recommend trying.I should have known when I walked into an empty restaurant in the heart of Little Tokyo that something was off! - Lura

This eatery aims to bring a specific slice of Japanese convenience and flavor to the bustling streets of L.A., offering a unique take on a classic.

Onigiri Sun specializes in handcrafted rice balls, offering a variety of fillings encased in perfectly seasoned Japanese rice and wrapped in nori (seaweed). Onigiri, traditionally a staple for quick meals and snacks in Japan, provides a convenient and satisfying option for those on the go or looking for a light bite. The concept emphasizes using quality Japanese rice and seaweed to deliver an authentic base for their offerings. While aiming to provide a comforting and quick culinary experience, Onigiri Sun focuses on this specific niche, contributing to the rich tapestry of Japanese food available in Little Tokyo.

Location and Accessibility

Its location in Little Tokyo makes it highly accessible via public transportation, a significant advantage for those navigating Los Angeles without a car. While the ambiance is that of a more local/high-throughput restaurant, it's designed for quick and efficient service, making it suitable for a fast meal. The interior is described as having a "retro and dope to 20th-century Japanese art/posters" vibe, contributing to a comforting atmosphere.
  • Specialized Onigiri Menu: The core offering revolves around a variety of handcrafted onigiri (rice balls). These are typically made with Japanese rice and seaweed and come with diverse fillings. While specific examples weren't extensively provided, customer reviews mention options such as:
    • Shrimp Avocado Onigiri
    • Miso Onigiri
    • Spicy Salmon Onigiri
    • Regular Salmon Onigiri
    • Other traditional and possibly unique onigiri fillings are usually available on site.

The onigiri are generally priced from around $6.50 to $10 per rice ball, reflecting the use of specific Japanese ingredients.

    • Karaage Bowl: A rice bowl topped with Japanese fried chicken.
    • Sushi: Basic sushi options like California rolls or spicy tuna rolls, though the range may be limited compared to dedicated sushi restaurants.
  • Takeout Service: Given the nature of onigiri as a portable food, takeout is a primary and convenient option. Customers can easily grab their rice balls to enjoy on the go or elsewhere in Little Tokyo.
  • No Complimentary Water: It's important for customers to note that, as per a customer review, Onigiri Sun does not provide complimentary tap water. Bottled water is available for purchase.

Detailed information on ongoing promotions or special offers for Onigiri Sun is not widely available in the provided customer reviews. Given its primary focus on a specific, quick-service Japanese snack (onigiri) within a bustling cultural district, promotions might be less frequent or advertised directly in-store rather than broadly online. However, typical approaches for similar establishments in Los Angeles might include:

  • Seasonal Offerings: Special onigiri fillings based on seasonal ingredients might be introduced for a limited time, creating a sense of novelty and encouraging repeat visits.
  • Loyalty Programs: While not confirmed, some local businesses in high-traffic areas implement simple loyalty programs (e.g., punch cards) to reward frequent customers.
  • Delivery App Promotions: If Onigiri Sun partners with third-party food delivery services (e.g., Uber Eats, DoorDash), these platforms often run their own promotions that could apply to orders from the restaurant, such as discounts for first-time users or free delivery during certain periods.

For locals in California, especially those residing in or frequenting Los Angeles, Onigiri Sun offers a unique and specific dining proposition within the vibrant Little Tokyo neighborhood. However, it's important for locals to approach Onigiri Sun with an understanding of its specific focus and the nuances mentioned in customer feedback. While some reviews indicate potential inconsistencies in food quality (e.g., cold onigiri, issues with shrimp cleaning) and a policy against complimentary water, the quick service and the manager's responsiveness to specific issues highlight aspects that might be valued by a local clientele looking for efficiency. For Californians seeking a very specific Japanese comfort food experience in a culturally rich setting, Onigiri Sun offers a straightforward option, particularly for those who prioritize a quick, on-the-go Japanese snack over a full-service dining experience.
