Otaru Sushi Bar

21 Temple St, New Haven, CT 06510, USA

4.0
The ABSOLUTE BEST omakase not only in CT but arguably the US. I live in New York City and *constantly* drive all the way to New Haven just for this. Every place I've been to in New Jersey and NYC (too many to count) has not come close in terms of quality. Sunny and Kathy are the best hosts you could ask for. Such an amazing experience - if you are in the area, and even if you're not, Otaru is unmatched and can't miss. Would give 6 stars if I could! - Jon Rizzo

Otaru Sushi Bar Introduce

otaru new haven

For discerning sushi aficionados in Connecticut and beyond, Otaru Sushi Bar in New Haven, CT, represents a truly unique and often lauded culinary destination. This establishment, led by the highly experienced Chef Sunny Cheng, has cultivated a reputation for delivering an unparalleled omakase experience, earning praise that often extends beyond state lines. Many ardent fans of authentic Japanese sushi consider Otaru to offer some of the best, if not the very best, omakase in Connecticut, with some even traveling from New York City specifically for the experience.

At Otaru Sushi Bar, the philosophy centers around the traditional Japanese concept of "omakase," which translates to "I'll leave it up to you." This means Chef Sunny curates a personalized tasting menu, selecting the freshest and highest-quality ingredients available to create a sequence of exquisite dishes. This approach ensures a unique and engaging dining journey, where each piece of nigiri or sashimi is presented with precision and artistry, often featuring rare and premium cuts of fish. The restaurant aims to provide a one-of-a-kind Japanese dining experience, emphasizing the chef's expertise and passion.

While the omakase experience is clearly a highlight, it's worth noting that individual experiences at Otaru Sushi Bar can vary. The focus here is on a high-end, curated sushi experience, which may differ from a more casual, a la carte sushi restaurant. However, for those seeking top-tier sushi craftsmanship and an immersive culinary adventure, Otaru stands as a compelling choice in the Connecticut dining scene.

Location and Accessibility

Otaru Sushi Bar is located at 21 Temple St, New Haven, CT 06510, USA. Its address places it in the vibrant heart of downtown New Haven, a city known for its rich cultural scene, historical landmarks, and diverse culinary offerings. Temple Street is a central artery, making the restaurant accessible for locals and visitors alike.

The location beneath an overpass connecting to the Temple Street Garage might seem unassuming, but it adds to the hidden gem allure that many fine dining establishments possess. While finding parking in a bustling urban center like New Haven can sometimes require a bit of planning, nearby parking options, including the Temple Street Garage itself, are generally available. This central positioning makes Otaru convenient for those working or living in downtown New Haven, as well as for patrons traveling from other parts of Connecticut who are seeking a premier sushi experience.

Services Offered

Otaru Sushi Bar specializes in a focused, high-quality Japanese dining experience with specific service offerings:

  • Omakase (Chef's Tasting Menu): This is the signature experience at Otaru. Guests entrust their meal to Chef Sunny, who meticulously prepares a multi-course selection of the freshest and most premium sushi and sashimi. The omakase typically includes small plates, nigiri, a hand roll, and soup. Reservations are highly recommended and often required for this experience, usually by calling the restaurant during specific hours.
  • A La Carte Menu: While the omakase is the highlight, Otaru also offers an a la carte menu for those who prefer to select individual items. This menu includes various rolls, nigiri, and appetizers. It's important to note that there is a minimum charge per guest (e.g., $40) for regular menu items, and walk-ins are generally accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis for this option.
  • Dine-In Service: Otaru offers a refined dine-in experience in a setting designed to highlight the sushi craftsmanship. The dining room, with its intricate wooden patterns and a sushi bar where chefs prepare dishes in front of guests, creates an ambiance that is both sophisticated and traditional.
  • Limited Takeout: While their focus is on the dine-in omakase experience, some menu items may be available for takeout. It's best to confirm directly with the restaurant regarding current takeout offerings.
Features / Highlights

Otaru Sushi Bar is distinguished by several key features and highlights that contribute to its acclaimed status in the Connecticut dining scene:

  • Exceptional Omakase Quality: The undisputed highlight is the omakase, which is frequently described as one of the best in Connecticut, and even compared favorably to high-end sushi experiences in New York City. Chef Sunny's expertise, honed over 20 years in distinguished NYC sushi restaurants like Morimoto, Nobu, and O Ya, shines through in every piece.
  • Highest Quality, Fresh Ingredients: Chef Sunny personally selects the freshest, highest-quality seafood, often sourcing it from New York. This dedication to premium ingredients is crucial to the omakase experience and ensures unparalleled flavor and texture.
  • Curated and Unique Experience: The omakase is not just a meal but a culinary journey. Chef Sunny often incorporates unique preparations, such as torching fish to release flavors or using different homemade soy sauces and garnishes to complement each bite, creating a symphony of flavors and textures.
  • Personalized Chef Interaction: Guests who choose the omakase often have the opportunity to interact directly with Chef Sunny, who is known for his "diner-first" attitude and willingness to engage with diners, sometimes even sharing insights about the fish with a sushi guidebook.
  • Sophisticated Yet Playful Bites: The sushi creations are described as both sophisticated and playful, demonstrating a mastery that goes beyond strict tradition while honoring authentic Japanese flavors. For example, their fatty tuna with caviar and gold has been highlighted as a premium offering.
  • Elegant Ambiance: The restaurant's interior features intricate wooden patterns (Kumiko technique) and wood details extending to the ceilings, creating a cozy yet upscale feel. The layout, often with a prominent sushi bar, emphasizes the artistry of the sushi chefs.
  • Husband-and-Wife Duo: The restaurant is run by Chef Sunny and his wife, Kathy, contributing to a personal and dedicated approach to hospitality.
Promotions or Special Offers

Otaru Sushi Bar's primary "special offer" is its meticulously crafted Omakase experience, which is priced to reflect the premium quality of ingredients and the expert craftsmanship involved. While the price point (historically around $108-$115 per guest for the Full Omakase) might be higher than a typical sushi meal, it is considered a value for the exceptional quality and unique dining journey it provides, especially when compared to similar high-end experiences in major metropolitan areas.

  • Full Omakase: Typically includes 3 small plates, 10 pieces of premium nigiri sushi, a hand roll, and soup. Some omakase experiences may also include a complimentary Japanese custard cake and dessert.
  • Sushi Omakase: A slightly more focused option, often including 10 pieces of sushi, soup, and a hand roll.

It's important for Connecticut diners to note that a credit card is usually required for a security deposit for omakase reservations, and a minimum charge per guest (e.g., $40) applies for regular menu walk-ins. Given the exclusive nature of their offerings, Otaru does not typically run broad, frequent discounts or promotions outside of their structured omakase pricing.
