Ramen House

Ramen restaurant ★4.0 (40)·$10–20

2623 San Bruno Ave, San Francisco, CA 94134, USA

4.0
Nice clean and modern restaurant. Staff seem a bit busy hanging out with their friends at the restaurant. We ordered the Okonomiyaki both the beef and the veggie and they were both excellent and tasted very similar to the ones we ordered in Japan. Of course our preference is the Hiroshima style which has the noodles which Ramen House does not carry. We also ordered the popcorn chicken which is supposedly excellent but we thought it was ok and not as crunchy as we’d like. Service was just ok but we’ll be back for the Okonomiyaki!!! - DYJ1948

Ramen House Introduce

For those of us in the diverse culinary landscape of San Francisco, the search for authentic and comforting Japanese flavors often leads us to local favorites. Nestled on San Bruno Avenue, Ramen House emerges as a go-to spot, particularly for its highly-praised Okonomiyaki. While the name suggests a focus on ramen, this establishment offers a wider array of Japanese delights, creating a welcoming and versatile dining experience for the community. It's the kind of place where you can find both classic comfort food and intriguing Japanese specialties.

Ramen House has garnered attention for its clean, modern aesthetic and, more importantly, its flavorful dishes. Patrons consistently highlight the Okonomiyaki, with both the beef and veggie versions receiving accolades for being "excellent" and tasting "very similar to the ones we ordered in Japan." This is high praise for a dish often referred to as "Japanese Pizza," a savory pancake made with a special batter, tempura flakes, sliced meat or vegetables, leeks, and cabbage, topped with delicate dried beef shavings, Japanese mayonnaise, and a sweet umami sauce. While some reviewers noted that the ramen house does not carry the Hiroshima style of Okonomiyaki (which includes noodles), the quality of their Osaka-style preparation clearly stands out. Though the popcorn chicken received mixed reviews regarding its crunchiness, the overall consensus is positive, with many intending to "be back for the Okonomiyaki!!!" Another unique feature is their early opening, serving "American breakfast among other things," offering a blend of familiar and exotic options to start your day. Despite some observations about staff being busy, the positive feedback on the food itself speaks volumes about Ramen House's culinary strengths.

Location and Accessibility

Ramen House is conveniently situated in the Portola neighborhood of San Francisco, a community known for its local businesses and residential charm. You'll find this Japanese eatery at:

2623 San Bruno Ave, San Francisco, CA 94134, USA

San Bruno Avenue is a main artery running through the Portola district, making Ramen House easily identifiable and accessible. The neighborhood's location provides convenient access for residents of the Portola, Excelsior, and Visitation Valley areas. For those relying on public transportation, several MUNI bus lines serve the San Bruno Avenue corridor, providing direct connections to various parts of the city. While specific details on parking availability are not provided, street parking can typically be found in residential and commercial areas like Portola, though it might be more competitive during peak hours. The restaurant's presence in a local, community-focused area means it's a convenient stop for neighborhood residents seeking authentic Japanese flavors without venturing too far into more bustling city centers. Its street-level location makes it easy to spot and enter.

Features / Highlights

Ramen House stands out for several key features and highlights that contribute to its appeal as a local Japanese dining destination in San Francisco.

  • Exceptional Okonomiyaki: This is arguably the biggest highlight. Both the beef and veggie Okonomiyaki are consistently praised as "excellent" and remarkably similar in taste to authentic versions found in Japan. It's described as a "delicious pancake made with a special batter with tempura flakes, small pieces of sliced beef, leeks and cabbage mixed and topped with very thin dry sliced beef, Japanese mayonnaise and a sweet umami sauce." This makes it a must-try dish.

  • Clean and Modern Restaurant: The aesthetic of the dining space is noted as "nice clean and modern," providing a comfortable and pleasant environment for patrons to enjoy their meal.

  • Authentic Japanese Flavors: The comparison of their Okonomiyaki to those in Japan underscores the restaurant's commitment to delivering genuine Japanese tastes, which is a significant draw for discerning diners.

  • Unique Breakfast Offering: A distinctive feature is that Ramen House "opens early and serves American breakfast among other things." This broadens its appeal and provides a unique fusion of Japanese and American dining options for morning patrons.

  • Variety of Menu Items: Beyond their acclaimed Okonomiyaki, the restaurant also offers other Japanese staples like "popcorn chicken" (though reviews for this were mixed) and, presumably, various ramen dishes, catering to different preferences.

  • Good Value: While not explicitly stated as "cheap," the focus on providing quality Japanese dishes suggests good value for the San Francisco dining scene.

  • Neighborhood Gem: Its presence in the Portola neighborhood positions it as a local favorite, offering a convenient and high-quality Japanese option for residents in the area.

  • Seasonal Promotions: Offering dishes made with seasonal ingredients or celebrating Japanese holidays.

Given their unique offering of "American breakfast among other things," it is possible they might have morning specials that combine Japanese and American breakfast elements.
