For those in Oregon seeking an immersive and flavorful Japanese dining experience, Shigezo Izakaya in Portland offers a unique opportunity to delve into the heart of Japanese culinary culture. More than just a restaurant, Shigezo aims to capture the essence of an "izakaya" – a casual Japanese pub where friends and colleagues gather to enjoy drinks and a variety of small, shareable dishes. While opinions may vary on how closely it mirrors every aspect of a traditional Japanese izakaya, one thing is clear: Shigezo Izakaya provides a distinctive and engaging atmosphere in the heart of our city. It's a place where you can find everything from expertly prepared ramen and fresh sushi to a range of small plates designed for sharing, making it an excellent destination for locals eager to explore diverse Japanese flavors.
Shigezo Izakaya is prominently located at 910 SW Salmon St, Portland, OR 97205, USA. Situated just steps away from prominent landmarks such as the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and the Portland Art Museum, it’s an ideal spot for a pre-show dinner, a post-museum meal, or a vibrant evening out. The downtown location means it's easily reachable via Portland's extensive public transportation system, including MAX Light Rail and numerous bus lines. For those driving, various parking garages are available in the vicinity, though, as with any downtown area, it's advisable to factor in potential parking time. The restaurant's position in this lively cultural hub contributes to its overall appeal, drawing in both local residents and visitors exploring the city's vibrant core. Features / Highlights:
- Authentic Ambiance with Traditional Seating: A notable highlight is the option for traditional Japanese-style tables where diners can remove their shoes and sit in a more authentic setting. This, combined with charming decorations, aims to create an exotic and immersive atmosphere that distinguishes it from many other Japanese restaurants in the area.
- Handmade Ramen Noodles and Rich Broths: The ramen at Shigezo Izakaya receives significant praise. The Kumamoto Ramen, in particular, has been singled out for its exceptional broth, with the red ginger and green onions providing a unique yet balanced flavor. The Shoyu Ramen is also highly regarded, with some patrons recommending adding fried garlic for an enhanced experience. The large portion sizes of ramen bowls have also been noted.
- Fresh Sushi and House-Made Sauces: The sushi rolls, such as the Tuna Krab Salmon roll, are often described as generously "loaded with fresh seafood" and topped with delicious house-made sauces, like unagi sauce, adding to their appeal.
- Diverse Menu Beyond Sushi and Ramen: While ramen and sushi are strong points, Shigezo offers an extensive menu that delves into other Japanese culinary delights. This includes dishes from their authentic robata charcoal grill, various fried items, and unique rice bowls.
- Attentive and Impressive Service: Many customers have highlighted the excellent service, describing waiters as attentive and helpful, offering suggestions and enhancing the overall dining experience.
- Central Downtown Location: Its proximity to major cultural venues like the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and the Portland Art Museum makes it a convenient and attractive dining spot before or after events.

Shigezo Izakaya Reviews
It’s not really an izakaya . I was disappointed. The chicken karaage and gyoza were oily not at all like ones I’ve had in LA, Osaka and Tokyo. Also the takoyaki was so disappointing - barely any octopus , without the golden crisp and way too much sauce. The balls seemed doughy too. Again not what I was expecting. The ambiance is kinda cool but it has that Portland unfinished look. I think if it focused on only small plates and Japanese beers it could be better - if the quality of the food increases. This is a chain (from Japan) not sure if anything good made it over. To be fair I didn’t try any of the noodle dishes.
December 09 · Lea AchimHad an extra night in Portland to explore after a fun weekend celebrating a great friend’s wedding! A friend of my girlfriend and I sent us this restaurant and we were super impressed with our visit. The restaurant has traditional Japanese style tables where you remove your shoes before sitting, and also has standard booth/tables if you would rather. Our waiter suggested the Kumamoto Ramen so I gave it a shot and this broth was one of the best tasting broths I have had with ramen ever. The red ginger and green onions gave the broth a unique but not over powering flavor. The Shoyu Ramen was phenomenal and we added some fried garlic to the broth. The Tuna Krab Salmon roll was loaded with fresh seafood and topped with a delicious house-made unagi sauce. Everything from service, to food to ambience was amazing here!
September 05 · carter kabotMy coworker and I came to town for a work trip and stumbled upon this place. I’m so glad that we did! I had the chicken katsu curry, and she had the shoyu ramen. Of course, we had to get taiyaki as well! Everything was delicious, and best of all, our server was so kind, attentive, and helpful! I highly recommend.
June 23 · Lexi VelteOMG what a fantastic restaurant. The best Japanese meal I have ever eaten. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The restaurant was busy but not noisy. The staff were friendly, helpful attentive and respectful. The concept of eating on a chair with no legs and my shoes elsewhere was a novelty but not discomforting. If you are looking for somewhere to eat then look no further.I will definitely return before I leave Portland.Thank you for a fantastic experience.
August 19 · Gary JelksLove this place. My favorite restaurant. I don’t come in often but when I want a nice ramen and sushi dinner this is the place. They have a few private shoji screened tables which I always ask for when they’re available. The food is always incredible and comes out faster than I anticipate. The drinks are great, especially the Japanese Pilsner. 10/10
