Sometimes it isn't the shiny new space wins the prize. Sono has been downtown for more almost 2 decades. It has endured when many gave up and persisted where many failed. They exemplify the consistency and quality that results in sustained excellence and success.To say, I'm excited about their new menu is an understatement. From bringing back classics like the grilled Octopus and firecracker shrimp rolls to a stunning Hamachi tiradito dish which taste as amazing as it looks. Many new dishes to venture into now. As the staff has said, Sono is transitioning to more of a izakaya style fare which seems more approachable and casual fun.The new updates are cute and my favorite is that sake wall. The ceiling could use more umbrella but it still beautiful. Very simple and cute.However, one thing that remains the same is their warm hospitality and genuine service. It's always great to go to a place where you always feel welcomed and unpretentious.If you haven't been in a while, definitely need to check back in. Never been? Don't miss out. Fun, friendly, and amazing food.
April 24 · ThomasSono was a total jam session for the taste buds. Everything from the service to the atmosphere had us vibing. But the headliner? That ribeye app you cook right at your table—like a culinary solo on a hot stone. Our lead singer (famously meat-obsessed) was basically in steak heaven. For anyone craving a little sizzle and showmanship with their meal, this place is a banger, with maybe the best sushi in all of Raleigh, no doubt.
April 08 · Cosmic SuperheroesFirst off, Courtney who took care of us was wonderful the whole timeWe had the Gyoza Dumplings which were great.We also shared the hamachi tale sushi and double fried wings which were some of the best wings we’ve ever had (recommend the Spicy gogo flavor) and finished it all off with Ube Cheesecake which was absolutely delicious.Can’t recommend this place enough ☺️
October 21 · Heaven0WFirst time here and it was delicious. Hannah was our waitress and she was fantastic. She got us wet towels to clean our hands after the chicken wings. And was overall super attentive. She even refilled my green tea. We enjoyed the appetizer where you grill some meat on your table and dip it in various dips. The sushi was very good. Especially loved the shrimp mango roll. The ribeye was good but tons of sauce and thought it would have been cut up and not a large slab of meat. It was still cooked correctly and tasty though. Seaweed salad was fresh. And the eel on the sushi rolls was very fresh. The chicken wings were excellent. Nice and crispy. Definitely will be back. My only issue that occurred was when we were seated my seat was sticky. I changed chairs and the hostess saw me do it and didn’t offer to change my seat. But that aside it was a great meal with excellent service by Hannah.
August 25 · Larissa KimAs long as I've been attending the week-long International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) World of Bluegrass (www.ibma.org) in Raleigh, N.C., I've been having a meal (or two) at Sono Sushi. I accidentally discovered Sono in 2017 and gave it a try. I was very impressed with the quality and selection of their sushi and other Japanese cuisine, drinks, and their impeccable service. I'm from California and finding a good sushi place in downtown Raleigh, who would've thought? Sadly, last Saturday's 5pm dinner (9/28/24) will probably be my last time dining at Sono because the IBMA WoB is moving venues to Chattanooga, T.N., after 11 years. So, that evening I went all out. My server was Andrew and he was very friendly and attentive. I had an incredibly delicious Tonkotsu Ramen with pork bone broth, black garlic oil, pork chasu, egg, noodles and a splash of chili oil. With uni (sea urchin) and hamachi (yellowtail) nigiri sushi. Paired with an ice cold Asahi. Everything was made to perfection! I even ordered a spicy tuna roll and a blue crab handroll to go for a midnight snack! Kudos to the sushi chef and their kitchen staff. I'd like to call special attention to the uni which can be hit-or-miss. And Sono nailed it! The management of this establishment is also top-notch as they would also stopped to ask me how I was doing during my meal. I will definitely miss Sono, my go-to place for sushi when in downtown Raleigh. Arigato gozaimasu Sono!!
