SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa Introduce
For us Californians, particularly those of us who live and breathe the vibrant culinary scene of Los Angeles, certain names in Japanese cuisine evoke an immediate sense of quality and tradition. Among them, SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa stands as an iconic destination, re-imagining the authentic Tokyo-style sushi experience for a broader audience while upholding the exacting standards of the legendary Chef Kazunori Nozawa. Located in the bustling heart of downtown LA, SUGARFISH has become synonymous with impeccably fresh fish, perfectly warmed rice, and a philosophy of "Don't Think. Just Eat." that simplifies the dining experience to its delicious essence.
What sets SUGARFISH apart is its dedication to a precise, intentional approach to sushi. This isn't your typical sushi bar with endless rolls and fusion creations. Instead, it focuses on the purity of the ingredients and the mastery of simple, yet profound, flavors. The hallmark of their style is the warm, loosely-packed rice that melts in your mouth, perfectly complementing the fresh, high-quality fish. Patrons consistently praise the "pretty good quality" of every piece, with highlights often including the various tuna cuts, pink lobster, and scallops. It’s an experience designed to highlight the natural taste of the fish, allowing its inherent quality to shine.
Despite its popularity, particularly at its downtown location, SUGARFISH is often lauded for its efficiency and quality. Diners frequently express pleasant surprise at the swift seating and attentive staff, even during busy periods. This focus on seamless service, combined with their commitment to sustainability and educating diners about responsible fishing practices, makes SUGARFISH more than just a meal; it's a mindful and incredibly satisfying culinary journey for us locals seeking genuine, high-quality sushi.
SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa is conveniently located in downtown Los Angeles at 600 W 7th St #150, Los Angeles, CA 90017, USA. This central address places it in a prime position within the bustling Financial District, making it easily accessible for professionals, residents, and visitors exploring the heart of the city.
Accessibility to this downtown location is quite good for us Angelenos. Public transportation options are plentiful, with numerous Metro bus lines and the Metro Rail (including the 7th Street/Metro Center station, a major hub) within comfortable walking distance. This makes it an ideal choice for a convenient lunch break or an evening out without the need for a car.
For those who do drive, parking in downtown LA can sometimes be a consideration, but SUGARFISH provides helpful information. Paid parking is available at LAZ Parking at 725 South Grand Avenue (just around the corner from the restaurant). The rates are a flat $7 after 4 PM on weekdays and $7 all day during the weekend. On weekdays before 4 PM, the rate is $2 per 15 minutes, with a $12 maximum. Additionally, services like SpotHero and ParkABM allow for pre-booking parking spots in nearby garages, offering peace of mind and often more favorable rates. The urban setting means that once you've parked, the restaurant is a short and pleasant walk away, allowing you to easily enjoy the vibrant downtown environment.
SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa offers a distinct and focused sushi dining experience, adhering to the philosophy of Chef Kazunori Nozawa. Their services are centered around fresh, high-quality ingredients and a streamlined approach to traditional sushi:
- "Trust Me" Omakase Options: This is SUGARFISH's signature offering. They provide various "Trust Me" menus that act as a curated omakase experience, allowing diners to simply trust the chef's selection. Options include:
- "Trust Me Lite": A smaller selection, often including sashimi, nigiri pieces like tuna, salmon, kampachi, and Nozawa-style shrimp, plus hand rolls.
- "Trust Me": A more comprehensive selection, typically including edamame, tuna sashimi, and various nigiri pieces (albacore, salmon, Japanese yellowtail, NZ Sea Bream, often a daily special), along with hand rolls (e.g., blue and Dungeness crab, toro).
- "The Nozawa Trust Me": The most extensive option, designed to be similar to what Chef Nozawa served at his original Studio City restaurant, often featuring a sashimi course, seven orders of nigiri, and two hand rolls.
- "Don't Think. Just Eat. Omakase": The most indulgent "Trust Me" offering, providing a wide array of premium pieces and hand rolls, including a sashimi course.
- A La Carte Ordering: While the "Trust Me" menus are highly recommended for the full experience, individual sushi and sashimi pieces, as well as hand and cut rolls, can be ordered separately. Options include Albacore, Bay Scallops, Japanese Yellowtail, Salmon, Tuna, Unagi, Toro, Blue and Dungeness Crab, and Lobster. They also offer "Limited Availability" items daily, such as Uni (sea urchin), Otoro (fatty tuna), Pink Lobster, and various types of sea bream.
- Warm, Loosely Packed Rice: A signature element of SUGARFISH's style is serving their sushi with warm, loosely packed rice, which enhances the flavor and texture of the fish.
- Proprietary Sauces: Chef Nozawa famously makes his own soy and ponzu sauces, which are provided in specific quantities to complement the sushi without overpowering it.
- Beverage Selection: The menu includes a selection of Japanese beers (Sapporo), various sakes (including Nozawa — Super Dry, Nigori, Hakkaisan), and a curated list of wines (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay). Soft drinks and hot/iced green tea are also available.
- Dine-In Service: SUGARFISH offers a polished yet efficient dine-in experience in a comfortable atmosphere.
- Takeout and Delivery: For convenience, all "Trust Me" menus are available for takeout (To-Go Trust Me, Nozawa To-Go, To-Go Lite, Don't Think Just Eat Togo). Delivery services are also offered via platforms like Postmates.
SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa distinguishes itself with several unique features and highlights that contribute to its celebrated status among sushi lovers:
- The Nozawa Philosophy: At its core, SUGARFISH adheres to the strict philosophy of Chef Kazunori Nozawa, emphasizing simplicity, purity, and the highest quality ingredients. This commitment is evident in every aspect of the dining experience, from sourcing to preparation.
- Warm Rice Sushi: A signature and highly praised feature is the serving of sushi with warm, loosely packed rice. This unique approach is designed to enhance the flavor of the fish and provide a distinct melt-in-your-mouth texture.
- Impeccably Fresh Fish: The quality of the fish is paramount. SUGARFISH is renowned for sourcing premium, often sustainably caught, fish daily, ensuring "each bite was fresh and incredibly flavorful." Their strong relationships with fish suppliers, some dating back to the 70s, ensure they get the best available.
- "Trust Me" Omakase Experience: This streamlined approach to omakase allows diners to fully immerse themselves in the experience without having to make individual selections. It's curated to present a progression of flavors, showcasing the chef's expertise.
- Efficient and Attentive Service: Despite being a popular and often busy establishment, especially in downtown LA, SUGARFISH is praised for its "efficiency and quality." Staff are noted for being "quick and attentive," ensuring a smooth and pleasant dining experience without feeling rushed.
- Focus on Sustainability and Education: SUGARFISH makes a conscious effort regarding sustainability, consulting with marine researchers and doing their own research to source responsibly caught or raised fish. They also educate guests about their fishing practices.
- Limited Menu for Quality Control: The intentionally concise menu, focusing on nigiri and hand rolls rather than extensive cooked options or complex rolls, allows them to maintain consistent, high quality across all offerings.
- Proprietary Sauces: The use of house-made soy and ponzu sauces, designed to perfectly complement their sushi, is another mark of their dedication to a holistic and authentic flavor profile.
SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa, with its focus on a premium, consistent dining experience, typically does not offer widespread, ongoing public promotions or discounts in the traditional sense. Their value is derived from the high quality of ingredients and the curated "Trust Me" menus.
However, one notable and popular offer they do provide is their Birthday Club. Loyal customers can qualify for a complimentary "Trust Me" omakase meal on their actual birthday. To be eligible, guests must register and complete their profile online and accrue at least two "check-ins" at any SUGARFISH location within the year leading up to their birthday. These check-ins are done on-site during a visit. The birthday gift is non-transferable and can only be redeemed for dine-in on the exact day of the birthday (with allowances for days the restaurant is closed or only open for lunch).
Beyond this, SUGARFISH focuses on the inherent value of its "Trust Me" meals, which provide a comprehensive tasting experience at a set price point. For specific, limited-time offers or seasonal specials, it is always recommended to check their official website or inquire directly at the restaurant, although their model tends to prioritize consistency over frequent promotions.

SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa Reviews
Tried the Don’t Think Just Eat Omakase, all the pieces were pretty good quality with nice warm rice. The ponzu is pretty sour and certain items come covered in it, so if you’re adverse to that flavor, you may want to request a different seasoning. I also was not a fan of the unagi, which was the finale, as it was really powdery. Overall, enjoy the atmosphere and the selection. Next time I will perhaps select the specific pieces I loved like the pink lobster, tuna cuts, and scallop!
May 25 · Stephanie YeoI took myself to lunch on a Monday and o was pleasantly surprised by both the efficiency and quality of this Sugarfish location. Being downtown, I expected to wait for a seat and for the food to take a bit to arrive but the staff was so quick and attentive. I opted to try the NOWZA TRUST ME so I could sample multiple plates and I was not disappointed. Each bite was fresh and incredibly flavorful. I also appreciated the attention to sustainability and education around fishing practices. I definitely recommend
October 25 · Lauren DonahoeService was fast. Food was really good for the price. Was pleasantly surprised! Good for a fast and affordable lunch.
March 25 · Helen ChangIt wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was mid. The ambience of the restaurant is nice but definitely not somewhere I would go or consider for a fancy date. It was mid. The service was okay but right from the beginning we were being rushed through the meal and out the door. No time or effort was taken to explain what was being served. It was more a mad dash to turn tables over. Again, it wasn't bad, not great. It was mid. The sushi itself wasn't bad, it was good. But for the price, I expect more. It was mid. Will not recommend or eat here again.
October 19 · Mark SalI’ve had Sugarfish in Pasadena and it was as pretty good and this spot is just as good or better.I ordered “Don’t think, just eat” option and added about three different dishes that weren’t in my meal option. All the sushi pieces were ever fresh and delicious. The proportions are on point and the flavors are phenomenal.I’d definitely come back here again and try their other menu items. Overall it was we a solid dining experience.Parking is very limited & you’d be lucky to find some on the street or you can get nearby paid parking.
