Sushi Chitose is conveniently located at 402 S Pacific Coast Hwy, Redondo Beach, CA 90277, USA. This address places it along a key thoroughfare in Redondo Beach, making it accessible for residents throughout the South Bay and surrounding areas of Southern California. While its exact spot might make it feel like a "hidden gem," its location on Pacific Coast Highway ensures it's not too difficult to find.
Parking, as noted by some customers, can be limited, but patrons often find spots closer to nearby businesses like the liquor store next door. Despite being a small establishment, the focus is clearly on the quality of the dining experience once inside. The restaurant prioritizes creating a comfortable and well-spaced seating arrangement, including coveted spots at the sushi counter, allowing for an intimate and engaging interaction with the sushi chef. This intentional design contributes to a focused and enjoyable meal, even if parking requires a little extra effort.
Sushi Chitose offers a highly focused and refined dining experience, emphasizing quality over quantity of services:
- Reservations Only: This is a crucial aspect of their service model. Sushi Chitose strictly operates by reservation, ensuring a personalized experience and controlled flow of guests. It's recommended to call well in advance, even several days, especially for weekend evenings or special occasions.
- Omakase Dining: The primary offering is an omakase tasting menu. This chef's choice experience allows guests to enjoy a curated selection of the freshest seasonal fish, expertly prepared and timed. There is typically one omakase option available, which previously cost around $75 and included approximately 11 pieces of nigiri, a crab hand roll, a choice of miso soup or fried shrimp head, and a small scoop of sesame ice cream.
- 脌 La Carte Additions: While omakase is the main event, diners have the option to add additional 脿 la carte pieces of nigiri or an extra hand roll at the end of their meal if they desire more.
- Sushi Counter Seating: Many guests enjoy the interactive experience of sitting at the sushi counter, allowing for direct engagement with the sushi chef. There are also a few tables available.
- Traditional Japanese Sake and Drinks: A drinks menu is available, complementing the traditional sushi experience with a selection of Japanese beverages, including sake.
- Dine-In Only: Sushi Chitose does not offer walk-ins or takeout, focusing exclusively on providing an immersive dine-in experience.
Sushi Chitose distinguishes itself with a series of features that contribute to its highly praised status:
- Authentic Omakase Experience: This is the cornerstone of Sushi Chitose. The omakase is renowned for its traditional approach, with the sushi chef perfectly timing each offering and often marinating fish in a shoyu base, reducing the need for extra soy sauce.
- Unparalleled Freshness of Fish: Consistently highlighted by customers, the fish at Sushi Chitose is described as "fresh" and "the freshest." This commitment to quality ingredients is paramount to their exquisite sushi.
- Perfect Rice Quality and Balance: Beyond the fish, the rice is given equal importance. Reviewers emphasize the "perfectly balanced portions of rice" and high quality, noting it almost "melts in your mouth."
- Knowledgeable and Welcoming Owner/Chef (Gen): The owner, Gen, is frequently lauded for his expertise and for creating a "warm and welcoming atmosphere." His presence enhances the personal and engaging dining experience.
- Relaxed and Comfortable Pace: Unlike rushed sushi experiences, Sushi Chitose allows for a "relaxed pace" during the omakase, enabling diners to fully enjoy each piece and engage in conversation.
- Intimate and Well-Spaced Seating: Despite being a "small place," the seating, including the sushi counter, is described as "well-spaced" and "comfortable," contributing to an intimate and enjoyable environment.
- Value for Quality: Many customers are "impressed with the price, quality, and service," often calling it one of "L.A.'s most affordable omakase experiences" for the high caliber of sushi provided.
- Traditional Preparation: The focus is on authentic, traditional sushi, meaning you won't find overly fancy or "Dragon or Spider Rolls" here, but rather expertly prepared classic nigiri and hand rolls.
- Memorable Dining for Special Occasions: Due to its intimate setting, quality, and relaxed pace, it's frequently chosen for and highly suitable for celebrations like birthday dinners.
Sushi Chitose, as a reservations-only, high-quality omakase establishment, does not typically run the kind of public promotions or happy hour deals seen at more casual sushi restaurants. Their value proposition lies in the exceptional quality of their traditional omakase experience at a comparatively reasonable price point for its caliber (around $75 for a multi-course omakase). While specific, ongoing "special offers" in the traditional sense are not mentioned in public data, the experience itself is considered a premium offering at an impressive value. It's advisable for patrons to inquire about the current omakase menu and pricing when making their reservation, as the specific fish offerings can change based on seasonal availability and chef's selection.

Sushi Chitose Reviews
*Reservations only* This hidden gem was found through looking at online reviews and lucked out in calling 3 days before for a birthday dinner reservation for a close friend.Parking is limited but managed to get a spot closer to the liquor store next door. Arrived a bit early for the reservation but we were seated right away at the sushi counter.Omakase sushi is the way to go, the sushi chef times the next offering perfectly while you enjoy the sushi. The fish is fresh and the rice quality/quantity is perfectly balanced. A lot of the sushi was already marinated in a shoyu base, so only a dab of wasabi was needed. Enjoyed the omakase and conversation so much that I only took one photo too. 馃崳馃崳As this was both of our first time here, overall i was impressed with the price, quality and service, and my friend was very happy that we could enjoy this omakase experience at such a relaxed pace on her special day. 馃檹馃檹Definitely returning to this place when I visit LA again.... 5 stars馃
Mar 17, 2025 路 P RANNASushi Chitose is an absolute gem! I鈥檝e only been twice, but every visit has been an incredible experience. The owner, Gen, is not only knowledgeable but also creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The sushi here is as traditional and authentic as it gets鈥攑erfectly balanced portions of rice and the freshest fish. When I want omakase, this is the only place I go. The seating is also well-spaced, making it a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking for top-tier sushi!
Mar 18, 2025 路 Tomomi NaritaHad a wonderful evening at Sushi Chitose with an old friend. We happened on it by accident, but it turned out to be a worthy discovery. The food was excellent and followed traditional Japanese cuisine. You won't find fancy creations such as Dragon or Spider Rolls here, just well made, authentic sushi. The atmosphere was comfortable, and the staff were friendly, although the service was a bit slow due to only limited staff there that evening. We had the Toro, Salmon Skin, and Spicy Tuna, along with mushroom appetizer and soup. Prices are reasonable. Reservations are needed, and the place is small. I recommend!
Oct 28, 2023 路 John PoburskyCame here to celebrate our anniversary and had their omakase. Sushi Chitose is a gem! Very high quality fish that I'm still thinking about. My favorites were the Inari, salmon, and toro nigiri. I can probably eat the blue crab hand roll everyday.
May 27, 2024 路 Summer KoNB: must make reservation in advance.Pretty good Omakase. It cost $75, and each of us got 11 pieces of nigiri, a crab hand roll, a choice of miso soup or fried shrimp head, and a very small scoop of sesame ice cream. There is no longer a "premium" vs "non premium" option. Just one Omakase.Loved the crab hand roll. Really liked the Japanese snapper and Toro. Shrimp was a bit cold and lacking in flavor. Didn't have strong feelings about the rest. In general , the quality of the rice was very high. It almost melts in your mouth. If I go back, I'd go a la carte. Omasake was a nice way to try a lot of different sushi, but tbh not sure it's not "worth" it if you're going with someone and are willing to share with each other.Sitting at the bar was nice, would recommend.
