Given their focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, the "promotions" often come in the form of new and exciting menu items that highlight the best of what's available from Japan. Sushi Maruyama Reviews
The japanese tai snapper was pretty good. The snapper was very “freshly sweet”. It worked well with the seaweed wrap. The soy marinated bluefin tuna was absolutely delicious. The truffle on top had a generous amount of truffle oil, which is necessary to bring out the aromatics in contrast with the tuna. The tuna and the truffle aromatics worked very well together. The tuna was fresh , and the sushi altogether was umami. The Japanese butter fish had a little too much wasabi on mine. not that much of a fan of this piece. It was “too clean “ and had little taste. The Hokkaido scallop was one of the absolute best! The uni was fresh and sweet. The scallops were too. The creaminess of the Uni combined with the crunchy texture of the scallops worked very well. The Japanese striped jack was fresh. The garnishes worked well. The Ora King salmon had a great soft texture. The fish eggs on top worked well with the flavor and packed a great punch of umami overall. The salmon was very fresh and had great taste. The toro taku was perfectly fatty. It was fresh. The Japanese freshwater eel was my least favorite. The eel was very lackluster. It needs something to wake it up. I did not quite understand the craft of this piece. The egg Castella was pretty good. it was soft and sweet.. almost like a tomago, but better taste and texture. The ora king, salmon with truffle hand roll was delicious! The aesthetics looked amazing. The daikon’s acidity definitely helped lift the salmon and enhanced the flavors. The Japanese firefly squid with vinegar misowas pretty good! The squid was delicious and soft. The seaweed was clean and mellow. My only take is that the vinegar miso should not be that strong, as it will overpower the freshness of the squid and the dish.Overall, the rice was well seasoned, and had great texture. For the most part, they put a good amount of wasabi and soy sauce into the rice, so there is no need for extra wasabi and soy sauce.Sit at the counter if you want the Omakase to be served to you piece by pieceWill definitely revisit and recommend!
Apr 13, 2025 · Clark ChanEdit 3/29/25 - had to come back to try the wagyu tacos. Please order these!! They are a must if you get an appetizer. The shell was crispy yet thin and really brings out the flavor of the meat.Hands down best sushi restaurant I've tried in the bay. Have lived here for 4 years trying to find high quality and fresh omakase. Came across this place while in San Mateo and so surprised with how delicious the sushi is.We ordered omakase, fatty tuna, salmon and uni. All of the items were just to die for. The best way to explain it was that nothing was even a hint of "fishy" - everything was fresh and buttery tasting. Hokkaido Uni was spectacular. Highly recommended. We didn't have reservations but the server was able to squeeze us in between reservations and I wish we came here sooner! I could eat here all day. Chefs are detail oriented and execute the perfect amount of rice to fish ratio and the added garnishes on top really enhance each fish's flavor. We even got a special cheesecake dessert at the end on the house!I will now be recommending this as the go to place for sushi to all my friends and family!!! Will be back soon!
Mar 30, 2025 · Alexis LyAn excellent Japanese restaurant with skilled chefs and outstanding service. The food was simply delicious, showcasing authentic flavors and meticulous preparation. The restaurant is small, so reservations are highly recommended. However, if you dine late, there’s a chance you might be able to walk in and get a seat.
Dec 15, 2024 · Annette GohThe sushi is amazing! I had the nigiri 8 piece special, and it was superb. Each piece was crafted with so much care, it felt like art. The fatty tuna toro just melted in my mouth. The staff is super friendly and welcoming as well.
