Introduction / Overview
For those in California, particularly the discerning palates of Los Angeles, the quest for an authentic and high-quality sushi experience often leads to the doors of revered establishments. Sushi Sasabune, located on Wilshire Boulevard, is one such place that has carved out a reputation for delivering a focused and traditional Japanese sushi experience. Known for its emphasis on fresh ingredients and a relaxed vibe, it caters to those who appreciate the artistry and subtle nuances of expertly prepared sushi, especially within an Omakase setting.
Customer experiences with Sushi Sasabune often highlight the restaurant's core strengths. One diner described it as a "solid sushi place" with a "relaxed vibe and pretty good service." A notable aspect is their Japanese Omakase set, where standouts included the uni, tuna, and snapper, with the octopus and scallop also receiving high praise. This suggests a consistent quality across their premium offerings. Many appreciate that the Omakase option provides "not a bad value for everything that you get," making it a recommended choice for those seeking this traditional chef's choice experience "without breaking the bank." While some long-time patrons have noted changes in the lunch special's offerings over the years, the "quality of the fish is still on point and fresh." This unwavering commitment to fresh ingredients remains a cornerstone of the Sushi Sasabune experience, ensuring that despite any menu evolutions, the core product — the fish — consistently meets high standards. The traditional approach, where customers might be greeted and offered the Omakase without a physical menu, further emphasizes the chef-driven nature of this authentic sushi establishment.

-
Dine-in Service: The restaurant offers a "relaxed vibe" for its dine-in customers, providing a calm atmosphere suitable for enjoying their traditional Japanese cuisine. Service is described as "pretty good" and attentive.
-
Omakase (Chef's Choice) Experience: This is a major highlight, with the "Japanese Omakase set" being a popular choice. In an Omakase setting, guests trust the chef to select and prepare a sequence of dishes, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients and the chef's expertise. Reviewed standouts included uni, tuna, snapper, octopus, and scallop, indicating a diverse range of high-quality seafood.
-
Nigiri and Sashimi: As part of the Omakase or potentially available à la carte (though the Omakase is heavily featured), Sasabune specializes in meticulously prepared nigiri (sushi with rice) and sashimi (sliced raw fish without rice). The reviews specifically mention "3 pieces nigiri" and a "chirashi style bowl (sashimi on rice)."
-
Sushi Rolls: While the emphasis is on nigiri and sashimi, the restaurant also offers rolls. One review noted "1 roll" as part of a lunch special.
-
Lunch Specials: Sushi Sasabune offers lunch specials, which typically include a combination of items. One recent lunch special consisted of "Small soup and salad, 3 pieces nigiri (sushi), 1 chirashi style bowl (sashimi on rice, nothing else), 1 roll." While the quantity in the lunch special might lead some to feel "hungry after the meal" (as one review suggested compared to past offerings), the quality of the fish remains high.
-
Traditional Accompaniments: Meals typically come with traditional Japanese accompaniments such as miso soup and salad.
Features / Highlights
Sushi Sasabune distinguishes itself in the bustling Los Angeles sushi scene through several key features and highlights:
-
Exceptional Freshness and Quality of Fish: This is the most consistently praised aspect of Sushi Sasabune. Customers repeatedly highlight that the "quality of the fish is still on point and fresh." Items like uni, tuna, snapper, octopus, and scallop are singled out for their superior taste and freshness. This commitment to high-grade seafood is paramount for an authentic sushi experience and forms the cornerstone of their reputation.
-
Authentic Omakase Experience: Sushi Sasabune is celebrated for its traditional Japanese Omakase set. This "chef's choice" approach allows diners to fully trust the expertise of the sushi chef, who curates a meal based on the freshest available ingredients. This provides a truly immersive and traditional dining journey. The reviews indicate this is a key draw for many, offering "Omakase without breaking the bank."
-
Relaxed Vibe and Atmosphere: Despite its focus on high-quality sushi, the restaurant maintains a "relaxed vibe." This comfortable and unpretentious setting allows diners to fully enjoy their meal in a calm environment, contrasting with some of the more overtly upscale or bustling sushi establishments in Los Angeles.
-
Pretty Good Service: Customers describe the service as "pretty good," indicating that staff are attentive and contribute positively to the dining experience. While not explicitly detailed, the smooth delivery of courses within an Omakase setting suggests a well-coordinated and professional team.
-
Value for Omakase: While a lunch special might be perceived as light for some appetites, the Japanese Omakase set is noted for being a "not bad value for everything that you get." This suggests that for the quality of fresh, premium fish and the curated experience, the pricing is considered reasonable.
-
Traditional Approach (No Menu Emphasis): The experience of being "greeted and just asked if we had been here before and gave no menu" is a distinctive feature of traditional, chef-driven sushi restaurants. This emphasizes trust in the chef's daily selections and reinforces the authenticity of the Omakase experience.
Promotions or Special Offers
Based on the provided customer reviews, Sushi Sasabune primarily features a structured approach to dining, especially with its Omakase and Lunch Special offerings, rather than overt promotional "deals" in the typical sense. However, these offerings themselves can be seen as value propositions:
-
Japanese Omakase Set: This is a core offering, and customers describe it as "not a bad value for everything that you get." While it comes at a higher price point than individual rolls, it offers a curated, high-quality experience with premium fish selections, often representing good value for an authentic Omakase.
-
Lunch Special: Sushi Sasabune offers a lunch special, which for approximately $39 (or $50 with tax and tip) includes "Small soup and salad, 3 pieces nigiri (sushi), 1 chirashi style bowl (sashimi on rice, nothing else), 1 roll." While one reviewer felt it wasn't as generous as in the past, it still provides a structured meal at a set price. This offers a way to experience their high-quality fish in a more accessible format than a full dinner Omakase.
Given the traditional and quality-focused nature of Sushi Sasabune, it is less likely to engage in discount-style promotions typical of casual eateries. Their "value" lies in the quality of ingredients and the authenticity of the experience.

Feb 25, 2025 · Alex YHaven’t been here in a while but I swear the lunch special had a better offering a couple years ago.The quality of the fish is still on point and fresh but the amount you get leaves most people hungry after the meal. Was greeted and just asked if we had been here before and gave no menu. We went with the tried and true lunch special but was surprised that it only came with…Small soup and salad3 pieces nigiri (sushi)1 chirashi style bowl (sashimi on rice, nothing else)1 rollAll for $39 or really $50 with tax and tip
Sep 25, 2024 · Sharn KungDecided to go for omakase sushi for the night and came to Sasabune Sushi which do ala carte, omakase (standard and premium) version.Sashimi was fresh and some tasted even fresher than the one I have in Japan which was amazing. The sweetness of the seafood was worth the amount paid.
Jun 09, 2024 · Lorelai DI love Omakase restaurants that make me feel excited waiting for the chef prepare the next course. Unfortunately this place didn't make the cut.Don't get me wrong. Most sushi was good and the fish was fresh, but nothing was truly exceptional. There were not any innovative flavor combinations between the ingredients that I haven't encountered before.More importantly, I didn't feel like the course was designed in a particular way to create a harmonious dining experience. For example, I find it odd that they don't include any starter or desserts in our course. The wait time between each course was also very long for no reason. Overall, it's an average experience for me.
Aug 31, 2023 · K MinI’m not even joking when I say this the best sushi I’ve ever had in my life. Like this was so good I had to write a review. Me and my friend accidentally stumbled upon this place, had no idea what was in store for us. This was the best surprise I’ve had in a while, the sushi was excellent. Now I’m looking at the reviews and seeing even more stuff we could’ve tried. Not to worry though, we will be back.
