Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar

Sushi restaurant ★4.0 (118)·$100+

1372 York Ave, New York, NY 10021, USA

4.0
This was the worst sushi experience I’ve ever had. The rice was entirely unsuitable for sushi – it lacked the light, fluffy texture and didn’t gently fall apart in the mouth. Instead, it was dense, sticky, and felt more like a large lump of rice or mochi. Despite using good-quality fish, the sushi itself was tasteless and poorly made, far worse than even grocery store sushi. The sushi chef seemed inexperienced in traditional omakase preparation. I was particularly surprised by how the sushi was presented without any thought or care for direction, something I’ve never seen at an omakase restaurant before. Additionally, hygiene was concerning, as the chef used the same gloved hands to handle sushi and touch various items around the kitchen. It made for a very unpleasant experience, to the point where I wanted to leave halfway through. While the fish itself was decent, the poor execution of the sushi overshadowed everything else. Considering the restaurant’s previously strong reputation, it’s clear that something has changed – likely a shift in management or ownership. Unfortunately, this once-celebrated establishment no longer meets its past standards. - J K

Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar Introduce

tanoshi omakase

For New Yorkers in pursuit of an authentic and truly memorable omakase experience, Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar on the Upper East Side has long been a subject of fervent discussion. This intimate establishment aims to transport diners directly to Japan, offering a traditional sushi journey where the chef's expertise and the quality of the ingredients take center stage. At Tanoshi, it’s not just about eating sushi; it's about engaging in a culinary dialogue with the chef, appreciating the precision of each cut, and savoring the delicate balance of flavors.

While recent reviews suggest a mixed bag of experiences, the potential for an extraordinary meal at Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar remains a powerful draw. When the stars align, particularly with Chef Tomoki at the helm, patrons speak of a "masterpiece" with every piece of sushi, where "precision and freshness" make you "momentarily forget every other meal you’ve ever had." This highlights the restaurant's ambition to deliver a pure, unadulterated sushi experience, focusing on the essence of Edo-style omakase – fresh fish and perfectly seasoned rice. For those who appreciate true Japanese craftsmanship and seek an intimate, interactive dining event, Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar offers a unique proposition in the bustling New York dining scene.

Location and Accessibility

Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar is strategically located at 1372 York Ave, New York, NY 10021, USA, placing it firmly within the desirable Upper East Side neighborhood. This location offers a sense of exclusivity, being slightly off the main avenues, contributing to its intimate and neighborhood-gem feel. For New Yorkers navigating the city, accessibility is relatively straightforward.

Public transportation provides convenient options. The Q train at 72nd Street and the 6 train at 77th Street are within a reasonable walking distance, connecting diners from various parts of Manhattan. Additionally, several M31 and M79 bus routes operate along York Avenue and nearby cross-town streets, making it easy to reach from other Upper East Side destinations or even further afield. Given its focus on an omakase experience, many guests plan their visit in advance, allowing ample time for travel and arrival, ensuring a relaxed start to their dining journey. The discreet facade on York Avenue adds to its allure, making it feel like a cherished discovery for those in the know.

Services Offered
  • Omakase Only Dining: Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar primarily offers an omakase-only dining experience. This means the chef curates and serves a multi-course meal, typically focusing on sushi and sashimi, based on the freshest seasonal ingredients available. There is no à la carte menu for the omakase seating.

  • Intimate Chef's Counter Experience: A key feature of Tanoshi is its intimate setting, often accommodating a limited number of diners at a chef's counter. This allows for direct interaction with the sushi chef, creating a personalized and engaging dining experience.

  • Sake Pairings: As indicated by its name, the restaurant offers a selection of sake to complement the sushi omakase. While specific details on pairings may vary, the presence of "Sake Bar" in its name suggests a thoughtful selection of Japanese beverages.

  • Reservations Required: Due to its small size and the nature of omakase, reservations are essential and typically booked in advance. This ensures a dedicated spot for guests to enjoy the full experience.

  • Fixed Seating Times: Omakase restaurants often operate on fixed seating times to ensure a synchronized experience for all diners. While specific times should be confirmed upon booking, this is a common practice.

Features / Highlights
  • Authentic Edo-Style Omakase: When executed well, Tanoshi offers a traditional, authentic Edo-style omakase. This style emphasizes simplicity, the quality of the fish, and perfectly seasoned rice, allowing the natural flavors to shine through.

  • Emphasis on Freshness and Precision: Patrons who have had positive experiences consistently praise the "precision and freshness" of the fish. When the sushi is at its best, it's described as "melt-in-your-mouth" with "perfectly seasoned rice."

  • Engaging Chef Interaction (with Chef Tomoki): Reviews highlight Chef Tomoki's ability to elevate the experience with his "humor and personality," making the meal "intimate and unforgettable" for those seated at the counter. This direct engagement is a significant draw for many omakase enthusiasts.

  • Traditional Japanese Craftsmanship: The restaurant aims to showcase "true Japanese craftsmanship" in its sushi preparation, appealing to purists who appreciate the art and skill involved in creating each piece.

  • Intimate and Focused Setting: The small, focused environment allows for a highly personalized dining experience, where attention is given to each diner and each piece of sushi served. This intimacy is a core part of the omakase appeal.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a traditional omakase establishment, Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar typically does not offer rotating promotions or discounted specials in the way a casual restaurant might. The value at an omakase restaurant is primarily derived from the quality of the ingredients, the expertise of the chef, and the curated dining experience itself.

However, it's important for New Yorkers to be aware of the price point. Based on available public information, omakase experiences at Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar can range, with past mentions of lunch omakase around $60-$65 per person and dinner omakase around $120-$125 per person. These prices reflect a commitment to high-quality, often seasonal, ingredients and the skilled labor involved in preparing each piece of sushi. While these are not "promotions" in the conventional sense, they represent the fixed pricing for the immersive culinary journey offered. Any variations or special seasonal menus would typically be communicated directly by the restaurant or through their reservation platform. It's always advisable to confirm current pricing and menu details when making a reservation.
