Tare Introduce
For those in Austin, Texas, seeking a truly unique and elevated dining experience, look no further than Tare, an exceptional Japanese restaurant specializing in omakase. Nestled in North Austin, Tare offers a culinary journey that marries the precision and artistry of traditional Japanese techniques with the vibrant flavors and ingredients of Texas. It's more than just a meal; it's an intimate, multi-course adventure curated by skilled chefs who aim to create lasting memories for every guest.
Tare focuses on a kappo-style omakase, which, as defined by the Michelin Guide, signifies a multi-course meal entirely entrusted to the chef. The term "kappo" itself means "to cut and to cook," highlighting a less formal yet highly interactive dining experience where diners are in close proximity to the chef as they prepare each dish. This approach ensures freshness, bespoke creations, and a genuine connection between the culinary team and their guests. Chef Michael Carranza, who honed his skills at some of Austin's most acclaimed restaurants like Uchi and Musashino, leads the team at Tare, bringing years of expertise and a creative vision to every plate. His dedication to sourcing premium fish directly from Japanese markets, combined with local, seasonal Texas produce, allows for a distinctive menu that evolves with the seasons.
Tare is conveniently located at 12414 Alderbrook Dr, Austin, TX 78727, USA, in North Austin. This makes it a accessible destination for residents across the greater Austin area, particularly those residing north of The Domain. The restaurant is situated in an unassuming building, contributing to its "speakeasy" ambiance, yet it offers ample on-site parking, ensuring a hassle-free arrival for diners. Whether you're coming from downtown Austin or the surrounding suburbs, reaching Tare is straightforward, allowing you to focus on the exceptional culinary experience that awaits inside. Its location provides a perfect escape from the bustling city, offering a serene and focused environment for an evening of fine dining.
Tare specializes in providing an intimate, multi-course omakase experience, emphasizing a highly personalized approach to Japanese cuisine.
Kappo-Style Omakase: The core offering is a multi-course meal where the chef takes the lead, preparing each dish based on the freshest ingredients available. This ensures a unique and spontaneous dining adventure with every visit.
Intimate Dining Setting: With only 12 seats, Tare offers an incredibly intimate atmosphere, fostering a direct connection between diners and the chefs. This small setting enhances the personalized service and allows guests to witness the artistry of the culinary team firsthand.
Texas Fusion Menu: The omakase menu masterfully blends Tokyo-style sushi and Japanese culinary traditions with distinct Texas flavors and ingredients. Expect innovative combinations that surprise and delight the palate.
Premium Ingredient Sourcing: Tare is committed to using premium fish sourced directly from Japanese markets and combining it with local, seasonal Texas produce, ensuring the highest quality and freshest flavors in every dish.
Beverage Program: Complementing the culinary offerings, Tare provides a thoughtful selection of beverages. Beyond traditional Japanese drinks, they also offer unique twists on Texas classics, like a "shot and a beer" featuring a Miller High Life and an A5 wagyu beef-washed whiskey shot, adding to the local charm.
Private Events: While details are best discussed directly with the restaurant, Tare does offer private event options for those looking to host a special occasion in their unique setting.
Tare stands out for several distinctive features that contribute to its highly regarded status among Austin's dining scene.
Michelin Recommended Restaurant: Tare has earned recognition as a MICHELIN Recommended Restaurant, a testament to its high-quality cuisine and exceptional dining experience.
Chef-Led Culinary Journey: Head Chef Michael Carranza, with his extensive background at top Austin establishments like Uchi and Musashino, personally curates each omakase menu, ensuring a refined and inventive progression of flavors. His commitment to integrating Texas elements into Japanese cuisine sets Tare apart.
Unique Texas-Japanese Fusion: Unlike many traditional Japanese restaurants, Tare actively incorporates Texas ingredients and culinary influences into its omakase. This results in surprising and delicious creations, such as Japanese ruby fish with salsa macha, toro tartare in a chicharron, or Hokkaido scallop with shiro dashi aioli and chorizo, as noted by patrons.
Intimate and Exclusive Ambiance: The 12-seat capacity ensures a truly exclusive and personal dining experience. Guests often praise the intimate setting, which allows for engaging interactions with the chefs and a focused appreciation of each course. This "speakeasy" feel, combined with warm hospitality, creates a memorable evening.
Focus on Hospitality: Customer reviews frequently highlight the engaging and knowledgeable nature of the chefs and staff. They are known for their sense of humor and for making guests feel like "guests in our house," rather than simply customers, ensuring a comfortable and welcoming environment.
Artistic Presentation: Each of the 15 courses in the omakase is not only a culinary delight but also an artistic presentation. The chefs pay meticulous attention to detail, elevating every bite with distinct flavors and artistry, making the meal a feast for both the palate and the eyes.
As an exclusive omakase restaurant with limited seating, Tare's focus is on delivering a premier dining experience rather than regular promotions or discounts. Their pricing reflects the quality of ingredients, the expertise of the chefs, and the intimate, personalized service.
However, it's always a good idea to check their official website or Tock booking page for any special collaborative events or unique tasting menus that might be offered periodically. For example, Tare has previously collaborated with other culinary ventures, offering unique experiences like "Tare x Sana Sana." These collaborations provide opportunities to experience their acclaimed cuisine in new and exciting ways, often with a limited engagement. Given the nature of omakase, the "special offer" is often the ever-evolving, seasonal menu itself, promising a fresh and inventive experience with each visit based on ingredient availability.

Amazing food and experience. Cousins and I were in town for Motogp weekend and we booked a few weeks ahead of time since some of the group never had omakase. The food was outstanding and the Chefs were knowledgeable and engaging (all of them had a wicked sense of humor too). Bartender knew his stuff and his drink suggestions were on point. I can’t recommend this place enough and we’re already talking about coming back next year.
Apr 07, 2025 · Anthony NguyenWe came to Tare for dinner and had an amazing omakase experience. The intimate setting, with only 12 seats, sets the stage for a unique 15-course Texas fusion menu. Chef Michael and his team truly shine, elevating every bite with distinct flavors and artistry. We left both satisfied and content, and I would wholeheartedly recommend Tare to anyone!
Feb 23, 2025 · Jomey VargheseSuch a lovely meal and experience. We added the premium sake tasting and some extra nigiri plus uni. Definitely recommend this omakase.
Apr 11, 2025 · Chris BurgyClassic Japanese omakase. I'd review an individual dish except you might not see it because the menu changes nightly. They age the fish in house and if you've never had dry aged fish you're missing out. 12 seats two seating per night Dynamite.
Mar 02, 2025 · TheGoatley1Overall, the food was good, and I particularly enjoyed the shrimp and scallops, which I truly appreciated. However, the dining environment could be improved. My husband and I faced direct sunlight for much of our 1.5 ish-hour meal, making it difficult to fully enjoy our experience, especially given that we spent nearly $400 for 2 people. I spoke with the chef about this issue, and while he mentioned they are still working on improvements since their January opening, it is now October. At this price point, there are better options in Austin.
