Tokyo Hanten has garnered a loyal following for its straightforward yet incredibly flavorful offerings. Another popular choice is the "Teriyaki Hamburger with rice," consistently praised as a "solid meal" that offers "good value for the price." While some dishes might lean towards a more subtle flavor profile, leaning into authenticity rather than over-salting, the consensus is clear: Tokyo Hanten delivers tasty, satisfying, and authentically prepared Japanese comfort food that’s perfect for any time of day. Let’s dive deeper into what makes Tokyo Hanten a must-visit spot for New Jersey residents looking for a delicious and accessible taste of Japan.
Tokyo Hanten is conveniently located at 595 River Rd, Edgewater, NJ 07020, USA. Its prime placement within the well-known Mitsuwa Marketplace is a significant draw, making it highly accessible for residents throughout New Jersey, especially those in Bergen County and along the Hudson River. Mitsuwa Marketplace itself is a hub for Japanese groceries, goods, and various dining options, attracting a steady flow of visitors.
River Road is a main artery in Edgewater, providing easy access to the marketplace whether you're traveling by car or public transport. One of the major advantages of dining at Tokyo Hanten is the ample private parking available at Mitsuwa Marketplace. This is a considerable convenience for New Jersey drivers, eliminating the typical hassle of searching for street parking in a busy commercial area. The restaurant benefits from the vibrant atmosphere of the Mitsuwa food court, where you can grab your meal and find a spot in the communal seating area. Some lucky diners even "snagged a spot by the window so we got to eat with a view of the skyline," though this sought-after experience can't always be guaranteed due to the popularity. Its location makes Tokyo Hanten a perfect stop for a meal during a shopping trip or a dedicated culinary excursion for authentic Japanese comfort food.
Tokyo Hanten operates primarily as a counter-service restaurant within the bustling Mitsuwa Marketplace, focusing on efficiency and convenience for New Jersey diners:

This allows patrons to enjoy their meals on-site in a lively and communal atmosphere. While window seats offering skyline views are popular, general seating is typically available.
- Takeout: All menu items are available for takeout, conveniently packaged for customers who prefer to enjoy their Japanese comfort food at home, at work, or on the go.

Tokyo Hanten is celebrated for its unique blend of traditional Japanese comfort food and practical, satisfying options, making it a favorite among New Jersey locals. Here are some key highlights:
- Signature Omelette with Fried Chicken (Karaage): A consistently praised dish, this features crispy Japanese fried chicken (karaage) served atop a fluffy Japanese omelette and rice. Customers enjoy the "pretty good" dark meat chicken and the "good" omelet, noting its authentic, slightly "bland" but "much preferable to too much salt" flavor profile, suggesting a genuine Japanese approach to seasoning. It often comes with a cup of miso or similar soup.
- Teriyaki Hamburger Steak with Rice: Another popular and highly recommended item, the "Teriyaki Hamburger with rice" is considered a "solid meal" that offers "good value." This Japanese-style hamburg steak, typically made from beef, is served with a savory teriyaki sauce, rice, and often includes a side of shredded Japanese white radish with mayonnaise dressing and seaweed salad. It's a comforting and hearty option.
- Gyoza Dumplings: Tokyo Hanten is also known for its Gyoza, offering a 10-piece pork gyoza appetizer that is quite popular. They also feature combination plates with hamburgers and gyoza, or fried chicken with gyoza, showcasing their versatility with this classic Japanese dumpling.

Tokyo Hanten, as a food counter within the Mitsuwa Marketplace, tends to focus on consistent value rather than frequently rotating promotions. However, New Jersey locals can still find ways to benefit:

This inherent affordability serves as an ongoing "promotion" for budget-conscious diners seeking quality Japanese comfort food.
- Combination Plate Savings: By ordering their popular "Combination Plates," such as the "Hamburger with Gyoza" or "Gyoza with Fried Chicken," customers often receive a more complete and satisfying meal at a bundled price, which can be seen as a form of everyday value.
- "Most Liked" and Popular Items: While not a discount, Tokyo Hanten often highlights its "most liked" items on online menus, like the "Build your own Hamburger Plate" or the "#72... Hamburger with Gyoza." These popular choices are effectively self-promotional due to their proven customer satisfaction and consistent demand.
- Third-Party Delivery Platform Deals: As Tokyo Hanten is available on major delivery platforms such as Uber Eats, Postmates, and Grubhub, New Jersey customers might occasionally find platform-specific promotions. These can include discounts for first-time users of the app, percentage-off deals for minimum order amounts, or free delivery during certain promotional periods, depending on the platform's current campaigns. It's always a good idea for locals to check the specific app for any active offers when placing an order.

Tokyo Hanten Reviews
We got the egg omelette with fried chicken. It’s 4 pieces of karaage on top of a Japanese omelette over rice. It’s served with what I think was a cup of miso. Or something similar. The chicken was pretty good. It’s dark meat. The omelet was good too. Overall it was a bit bland, but much preferable to too much salt. I’d get it again. We snagged a spot by the window so we got to eat with a view of the skyline, but it’s busy so don’t count on it
Apr 14, 2025 · LauraIf you’re heading to Mitsuwa, make sure to carve out some time to try Tokyo Hanten. We had the Teriyaki Hamburger with rice—it’s a solid meal, and for the price, you really get good value.I tried it a few years ago and remember the meat being a bit better back then, but it’s still a tasty and satisfying option. Worth checking out if you’re in the food court!
Apr 06, 2025 · salman sigariBeen coming to this restaurant for 7 or so years from New York or on my way entering New York from visiting New Jersey. Always been stellar but I don't think I will be returning anytime soon. The food is decent. Especially if your into the Japanese style hamburg served over fried rice. The fried rice doesn't have much flavor but acceptable for the price. The models of the food displaying on the wall of the restaurant aren't 100 percent honest. Those are a model of steak...what you get is a "hamburger patty". So it's a bit smaller. Aside from the food, the service has always been acceptable until today. The Asian young man with glasses at the register was rude. Spoke extremely quietly and when asked to repeat themselves, he glared. Made his job easier when I told him I wanted it "for here" and he wasn't paying attention and sounded like he hated the world and asked me if I wanted it for here or to go. When the food finally came and there was multiple orders at the register, he did not direct the customers and he sounded annoyed expecting the customers to know which order was which when some looked similar. Please discipline your employees, because this is how you lose valued your customers.
Dec 16, 2024 · Luckson LeungExcellent value for item #30, you get two giant patties, fried rice and soup for $15.99. Service is fast and presentable for fast-food. The karaage was superb as well.
Dec 04, 2024 · D TAmazing food, huge serving for the price. Quick service, no complaints. It's inside of Mitsuwa.
