Tonton Restaurant Reviews
I've been here a few times while staying nearby. My go to is the house ramen tonkatsu. There is plenty of food, the broth is just spicy enough. The meat is tender, and the egg is perfectly jammy. The service is fast and pleasant. They keep the water filled. I had the single serve saki, which was mild and way more than I could consume by myself.
April 06 · Bonnie D1 StarI actually enjoyed my meal at Tonton—I'll give credit where it's due. The Tan Tan Ramen was my usual go-to and it hit the spot with solid flavor and spice. I even found it hilarious (and kinda awesome) that the entire kitchen staff was speaking Spanish while whipping up Japanese food. Respect to the cooks.BUT HERE'S WHERE IT GOES DOWNHILL:After I left, I opened my browser to check my receipt—only to find that the host took it upon himself to tip himself 10% after I clearly wrote NO TIP on the receipt. That’s not just sneaky, that’s straight-up theft. This isn’t some misunderstanding or accidental charge. This is a hustle, plain and simple. A scam. If they’re doing this to me, how many other customers are getting robbed without even noticing?Shame on the front-of-house staff. The food might be worth coming back for, but not if I have to watch my wallet like I'm in a casino. Be warned: check your receipt, and check your bank statement. This place will help themselves to your money if you’re not looking.Disgusting behavior.
May 17 · Warmed OliveThe chicken curry that people seem to rave about is average at best. The chicken was fried well and was Koch, but the rice is hard and the curry sauce had no flavour. I can do a better job at home with standard Japanese curry pastes from supermarketsWas the portion big? Yes. Was it affordable? Yes. But I am pretty sure all the great reviews are from people who likes a cheap meal with big portions rather than people who likes food that’s actually goodThe ramen also seemed very mid and the table next to me barely touched their noodles and their bento box. Nobody there actually seems to be enjoying their food to the level that warrants the 4-5 star reviews on hereAmbience is dark and depressing. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere
March 30 · Anthony S (Torontofoodgourmand on IG)Landed late one night in San Fran and was craving ramen. This little shop hit the spot! The ramen was good and authentic! The karaage chicken was great! Not that anemic fried chicken crisp that a lot of places serve and instead a meaty healthy portion of poultry lightly breaded. The hot broth was delicious, blended well while emitting flavors and scents to match. The veggies and eggs were all fresh. All around, a GREAT experience!
March 13 · Jaime MooreThe food is fantastic. I am so happy to have it open until midnight. Nothing beats delicious and warm food in late night in the cold Bay Area
