Among them, Umami Sushi stands out as a true local gem. With years of loyal customers and consistent praise, this restaurant has cemented its reputation for offering not just excellent sushi, but also an unbeatable dining experience that keeps patrons coming back. It’s the kind of place where quality meets affordability, making it a favorite for many in the community.
Umami Sushi has been a go-to spot for discerning sushi lovers for years, with one customer noting their loyalty for "8 years" with "no complaints about the sushi." This speaks volumes about the consistency and quality you can expect. Patrons frequently highlight the "really good" sushi, often comparing it favorably to other places that charge more for lesser quality. The secret to their success lies in their commitment to using "the freshest and highest quality seafood and ingredients," ensuring that every roll and piece of nigiri is a delight to the senses.
What truly sets Umami Sushi apart is its incredible value proposition. Their "All-you-can-eat option" is available "all day, everyday," offering an expansive menu from which to choose. Beyond the generous dine-in experience, their "take-out special and the portions are hard to beat," making it easy for "2-3 people" to enjoy a hearty meal. Popular rolls like the Golden, Deep Sea, and Spicy Sanshoku, along with delicious chicken yakitori, are customer favorites. The welcoming staff, clean environment, and convenient BYOB option further enhance the overall appeal, making Umami Sushi a highly recommended destination for fresh and flavorful Japanese cuisine right here in Chicago.
Umami Sushi is conveniently situated at 4626 N Cumberland Ave, Chicago, IL 60656, USA. This address places it in a prime location within Chicago's Jefferson Park area, bordering Norridge, making it easily accessible for residents across a wide section of the city and its western suburbs. Cumberland Avenue is a significant thoroughfare, ensuring straightforward navigation for diners arriving from various directions.
The restaurant's location offers significant advantages in terms of accessibility. For patrons arriving by car, Umami Sushi benefits from parking available in a lot outside. While customer reviews indicate that "seating may take a while, especially on weekends and during dinner hours" due to popularity, the presence of a dedicated parking lot helps alleviate the common urban challenge of finding a spot. It's advisable to arrive early during peak times, but the parking availability certainly contributes to a more stress-free visit.
Furthermore, its position near major intersections and arterial roads makes it convenient for those driving from surrounding Illinois communities like Norridge, Park Ridge, Harwood Heights, and Schiller Park. For those utilizing public transportation, it's prudent to check local CTA bus routes that operate along Cumberland Avenue or nearby streets, which would provide connections to 'L' train lines. The presence of a liquor store right next door also adds a layer of convenience for customers looking to utilize Umami Sushi's BYOB option, making it an even more attractive and accessible dining spot for Chicago locals.
Umami Sushi provides a comprehensive range of services, catering to both dine-in guests seeking a full experience and those looking for convenient takeout options, all while emphasizing freshness and value.
- All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) Sushi: This is a major highlight, available "all day, everyday." The AYCE option allows diners to enjoy unlimited fresh sushi, sashimi, signature rolls, appetizers, and even some cooked entrees. Prices differ slightly between lunch (~$29 on weekdays) and dinner (~$38 for regular AYCE), with a premium option for an additional charge. There is a "90-minute limit or until closing" and a policy that if one patron orders AYCE, the rest of the table must also order AYCE. Kids AYCE is also available.
- Extensive A La Carte Menu: Beyond AYCE, Umami Sushi offers a full a la carte menu for those who prefer to order individual items. This includes a wide selection of nigiri (2 pcs), hand rolls, maki rolls (4 pcs), torched rolls (4 pcs), and deep-fried rolls (4 pcs).
- Popular Signature Rolls: The restaurant boasts many "delicious and flavorful rolls to choose from," with customer favorites including the Golden Roll, Deep Sea Roll, and Spicy Sanshoku Roll. Other unique offerings like the Splash, Morgan, Prime, Mimi, Deadpool, and Chase rolls are also part of their extensive selection.
- Variety of Appetizers & Hot Dishes: The menu extends far beyond just sushi. Available appetizers include Edamame (plain, garlic, spicy garlic), Pork Gyoza, Shrimp Shumai, Potato Croquettes, Garlic Brussels Sprouts, Jalapeño Poppers, Crispy Calamari, Takoyaki, Chicken Karaage, and Baked Green Mussels. They also offer cooked entrees like Teriyaki (chicken, steak, salmon), Grilled Kama, and Katsu (chicken or pork).
- BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) Option: Umami Sushi is a BYOB establishment, allowing customers to bring their own alcoholic beverages. This is a significant draw, enabling patrons to enjoy their favorite drinks with their meal, often at a lower cost than purchasing from a restaurant's bar. A liquor store is conveniently located next door.
- Take-Out Specials & Portions: Umami Sushi is known for its generous take-out specials, with portions that are "hard to beat" and can "easily eat from" for 2-3 people. This offers excellent value for dining at home.
- Clean and Welcoming Environment: Customers consistently report that the "Restaurant is clean" and the "staff" are "nice" and provide "great service," contributing to a pleasant dining atmosphere.
Umami Sushi in Chicago stands out with several distinct features that make it a highly regarded destination for Japanese cuisine in Illinois.
- Exceptional All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) Option: This is arguably the biggest draw. Umami Sushi offers AYCE sushi "all day, everyday," a rare find for its quality and breadth. The AYCE menu is extensive, featuring not just standard rolls but also premium items, a variety of appetizers, and even some cooked dishes, making it incredible value for those with a big appetite for sushi.
- High Quality and Freshness of Sushi: Despite being an AYCE establishment, customers consistently praise the sushi as "really good" and "very fresh." This commitment to quality, even within an all-you-can-eat model, is a significant highlight and a key reason for its long-standing customer base.
- BYOB Policy: The "B.Y.O.B option" is a major convenience and cost-saver for diners. This allows patrons to bring their favorite alcoholic beverages to pair with their meal, enhancing the dining experience and making it more personalized and affordable. The proximity of a liquor store next door further adds to this convenience.
- Unbeatable Take-Out Specials and Portions: Beyond dine-in, Umami Sushi offers takeout specials known for their "unbeatable" portions that can easily feed "2-3 people" for the price. This provides tremendous value for customers opting to enjoy their sushi at home.
- Wide Variety of Rolls and Dishes: The menu boasts a vast selection, including numerous "delicious and flavorful rolls" (e.g., Golden, Deep Sea, Spicy Sanshoku), as well as a diverse range of appetizers (like chicken yakitori, gyoza, and tempura) and hot entrees. This extensive choice ensures there's something to satisfy every craving.
- Consistently Good Service and Cleanliness: Customers frequently compliment the "nice staff" and "great service." The restaurant is also noted for being "clean," which contributes significantly to a comfortable and pleasant dining environment.
- Value for Money: Across both its AYCE and takeout options, Umami Sushi is consistently lauded for offering excellent value. Customers feel they receive high-quality food at very competitive prices, making it a compelling choice compared to other sushi establishments.
Umami Sushi in Chicago is well-known for its consistent and value-driven promotions, primarily centered around its highly popular All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) option and generous take-out specials. These offers make it a particularly attractive choice for locals in Illinois looking for high-quality sushi at a great price.
The most significant and ongoing promotion is their All-You-Can-Eat Sushi program, available "all day, everyday." This offer allows diners to enjoy an unlimited amount of fresh sushi, sashimi, signature rolls, appetizers, and select cooked dishes from a dedicated AYCE menu. The pricing structure provides excellent value:
- Lunch AYCE: Typically around $29 per person (Monday-Friday).
- Dinner/Weekend AYCE: Around $38 per person for the regular AYCE. There is also a "premium" AYCE option available for an additional $10, which includes more exclusive items like Bluefin Tuna, Toro, and various sashimi choices.
- Kids AYCE: Priced at $12 for lunch and $15 for regular, making it family-friendly.
It's important for customers to note the AYCE policy: "If one patron orders AYCE, then the rest of the table must order AYCE." There's also a "90-minute limit or until closing" and a policy regarding wasted food. These details ensure fair usage of the promotion.
Another major highlight is their Take-Out Specials. While specific pricing for these special combos isn't provided in the reviews, customers consistently rave that the "take-out special and the portions are hard to beat." Reviewers emphasize that "2-3 people can easily eat from one of them," indicating substantial value for family meals or group gatherings at home. These specials often feature a combination of popular rolls and appetizers at a discounted rate compared to ordering items individually.
Additionally, the BYOB policy serves as a significant cost-saving "promotion" in itself. By allowing patrons to bring their own alcoholic beverages, Umami Sushi eliminates restaurant markups on drinks, contributing to a more affordable overall dining bill, especially for groups. The convenience of a liquor store next door further enhances this benefit.
While there aren't explicit daily deals mentioned like "Monday sushi half-off," the consistent value provided by their AYCE, take-out specials, and BYOB option effectively functions as ongoing promotions that benefit the local community. Illinois residents looking for a fantastic deal on fresh sushi will find Umami Sushi's offerings hard to resist.

Umami Sushi Reviews
I’ve been a customer for 8 years no complaints about the sushi, it’s really good especially compared to other places for the same prices or more. Nice staff. Their take-out special and the portions are hard to beat. 2-3 people can easily eat from one of them. My favorites are the golden, deep sea, and spicy sanshoku rolls. The chicken yakitori is really good too.

There are many delicious and flavorful rolls to choose from. The menu has many items, and I liked everything I tried. This place has a B.Y.O.B option which is great. This place does get busy, but I believe it's worth the wait. The service was great. Restaurant is clean.
Jul 14, 2019 · Steve SabuI don’t normally write reviews but I have always had a pleasant experience here. With 3 rolls, 2 pieces of sushi and an appetizer, the to go special is really an excellent deal. Even though it’s take out I always make sure to leave a tip for their service. My go to is the Sapporo, Crunchy shrimp, Spider roll and buttery soft yellow tail with a side of spicy mayo. Very fresh and delicious!
Sep 29, 2024 · AgnesSushi is amazing every time. I love that they offer the soy paper wrapper as an option. There are so many delicious options but the crunchy shrimp roll is my favorite 🙂
Mar 02, 2025 · NikkiWe started coming here when our favorite sushi bar closed for good after the Covid pandemic. Their sushi is delicious and fresh! my only complaint is that they are not also a tappanaki steakhouse with Golden shrimp. If you love sushi you won't be disappointed. our favorites are the Spicy Tina, Firecracker Calamari, Dragon and Mexican rolls.
