For these individuals, Umi of Japan could represent a satisfying option for Japanese cuisine in the Saugus area.
However, it is crucial for prospective diners to be aware of the significant negative feedback. Serious concerns were raised regarding hygiene (e.g., a "LONG HAIR in my fried rice"), food quality (e.g., "fish looked old," "horrible" taste, bland fried rice, "bad water" tasting duck sauce), and inconsistencies in order accuracy (e.g., vegetables included when requested otherwise). Issues with customer service and communication, including language barriers and alleged overcharging without providing correct change, also present notable drawbacks that could severely impact a dining experience. The description of a "poor" and "dark" atmosphere with an unkempt bathroom further adds to the concerns.
Therefore, while Umi of Japan is conveniently located on a main Saugus thoroughfare, and some have had positive experiences, potential local customers in Massachusetts should proceed with caution. It may be suitable for those willing to take a chance based on the positive reviews, perhaps starting with a small order to gauge the current quality and service. However, for diners who prioritize consistent food freshness, impeccable hygiene standards, and clear communication, the strong negative feedback suggests that careful consideration is warranted before choosing Umi of Japan for their next Japanese meal. It highlights the importance of personal discernment when local word-of-mouth offers such conflicting viewpoints.

Umi of Japan Reviews
My family went here over the weekend and it looked like your average Chinese restaurant. Although, I was extremely surprised to see a LONG HAIR in my fried rice! I had already ate most of it and I was completely disgusted to see this and I immediately reported this to the Asian lady who serves the food. Unfortunately, she didn’t speak a word of English and when she heard “fried rice”, she grabbed a new dish to start serving me again. Luckily, the Asian dude who was next to her understood what I was saying and suggested I order a new combo. Not to mention the food tasted horrible and STEER CLEAR OF THIS PLACE! THIS HAS RUINED MALL FOOD FOR ME!!!
Apr 07, 2025 · Paul Huangyeah so we bought the combo, we asked for no vegtables and she still gave them to us? then she kept asking for money even though we already had gived 23 dollars when the meal was 16(plus drinks) and we ended up hiving like 40 dollars and she did NOT give us change
Dec 20, 2024 · Sunny BrammerI asked what the uni chicken was, but the worker didn’t speak English so she just put uni chicken on my plate. I just thought “whatever I’ll like it” I did not. There was lots to spit out. Rice had like no flavor too. Waste of $13
Nov 09, 2024 · Julien CellaGarbage food. I’m actually watching the Asian dude itching his face with bare hands as I type this review. Stay away from this place. A dog wouldn’t eat this.
Apr 06, 2025 · TAKASHI TANAKAWe got a combo which she over priced and kept demanding more and more money until we had none left. In the end, we got a twelve dollar combo and she charged us 30 dollars.
