Zen Teriyaki

2063 NW 185th Ave, Hillsboro, OR 97124, USA

3.0
It's been more than 15 years since I've eaten at this place and I remember it being okay. We were unfortunately dissapointed on a recent visit with my partner.Things I liked, menu on the outside of the building. I like the pressure free experience of viewing the menu without a line behind me or the owner-operator feeling obligated to wait while I decide. They didn't knott the bag so I could dress it in the shop before I leave, that was nice.We ordered 2 chicken breast teriyaki plates, orange chicken and spring rolls. When I saw the chicken breast on the menu I was excited because that's uncommon. Most places ONLY use thigh meat. Which makes a lot of sense don't get me wrong. It's juicy and cheaper. However breast meat does not have to be dry, this time though, the way it was prepared, more than half of both of our plates were incredibly dry chicken breast. The rice was good and the salad was bagged salad cafeteria style (standard). The service was standard for this type of place, which is to say dry, not rude, not friendly either though. Instead of offering a drink from the cooler (that we hadn't seen/couldn't see) while we were trying to decide if we wanted a drink, we ended up with a fountain drink that I felt was overpriced. Would have prefered the bottled stuff that doesn't come from a potentially molded fountain drink faucet/mold. And the options were better for the bottled. What I didn't like, the dry chicken breast. And the orange chicken was inedible. The meat in the orange chicken looked like the darkest of the dark meat, like maybe even livers or hearts IDK. I know that sounds crazy and I'm not making any accusations but it wasn't good. Neither my partner or I could eat it.My partner said the spring rolls were okay but not great. Standard from a bag fried up spring rolls.$15.00 for a plate of dry chicken breast and $3.00 for a fountain drink that was probably 20 ounces. I don't recall how much we paid for the orange chicken (that we couldn't eat) or the spring rolls but our total with tip. Came out to $56.70.Which comes to the last thing I want to say. Tipping culture in America is gettin out of control. I've worked a tipped position my self and understand the value of take home money every night. But when you own the business, this isn't tipping your employees, this is a tip for you, and when your service is substandard and the chicken is dry, I don't think you deserve the tip. ESPECIALLY if you are the business owner, this isn't you trying to make sure your servers go home with diaper money. This is padding your already heavy set prices with more money. Just on a sliding scale of how much someone is willing to pay for your begging. Like what's the difference between tipping for "standard service" and someone panhandling on the corner? The atmosphere was outdated, there was a couple there with their infant child. Only 1 other person showed up the entire time we were there (lunch time 11:05am) for the approximately 30 minutes we sat eating our food in the parking lot. - Conald Frostig-Miller
