While the restaurant itself is described as a bit of a "Hole in the Wall" and "doesn't even look like there should be a restaurant here" from the outside, this adds to its mystique as a true hidden gem. It's often tucked away in a commercial building, sometimes requiring a bit of searching (e.g., "through the glass door by the Farmer's Insurance sign, down the narrow hallway and to the left to a back suite"). However, this minor search is consistently reported to be well worth the effort for the exceptional dining experience inside. Somerville offers various parking options, including street parking and public lots, generally making it accessible for diners. Its location in a walkable downtown area means it's convenient for those already in Somerville enjoying the local shops or events, making it a destination for truly authentic Japanese cuisine.
Ai Sushi provides an exceptional array of services focused on delivering a high-quality, authentic Japanese dining experience:
- Dine-In Service: Enjoy your meal in a "quiet, almost intimate environment," designed for a focused and refined culinary experience.
- Omakase Dining: A highly recommended service where you "let the chef decide your meal." This includes "10 pieces of nigiri and a hand roll crafted from the finest seasonal seafood available," with options that start at $90/person for sushi only or $105/person for sushi and sashimi. It's noted for being "simple, beautiful, and without gimmicks."
- Extensive Sushi & Sashimi Selection: Offers a "vast" and "incredible" selection of "fresher and more tender tasting" fish, including exotic options like sea urchin (uni), monkfish liver (ankimo), o-toro (tuna belly), and various seasonal fish.
- Authentic Ramen: Beyond sushi, the ramen is a strong highlight, described as a "big, hot, savory bowl of wonderfulness that is hard to equal." It's considered a "favorite on a cold night."
- Expert Staff Recommendations: While not explicitly stated as a service, the nature of omakase and the high praise for authenticity suggest staff are knowledgeable and can offer guidance.
- Traditional Japanese Cuisine: Focuses on "authentic Japanese cuisine at its best," indicating a commitment to traditional flavors and preparation methods.
- BYOB Option: According to one external review, Ai Sushi is BYOB, which can be a convenient and cost-effective option for diners.
- Lunch and Dinner Service: Operates for both lunch and dinner on select days (Lunch: Wed-Sat; Dinner: Wed-Sun; closed Mon-Tues).
Ai Sushi stands out for several key features and highlights that consistently earn it fervent praise from its devoted clientele:
- "Best Sushi I've Ever Had": This is a recurring sentiment, with customers describing everything as "fresher and more tender tasting than other restaurants in central NJ," solidifying its reputation for top-tier quality.
- Exceptional Fish Selection: The "vast" selection of fish and "miscellaneous sea based critters" is a major draw, including unique offerings like sea urchin (uni) and monkfish liver (ankimo), providing an adventurous culinary experience.
- Highly Praised Omakase Experience: The omakase style is described as "cool," "worth the price," and "simple, beautiful, and without gimmicks." It's noted as "second to none" and offers a curated, high-end tasting journey.
- "Amazing" and Unforgettable Ramen: Beyond sushi, the ramen is a highlight, deemed a "big, hot, savory bowl of wonderfulness that is hard to equal" and a "game changer." This makes it appealing even for non-sushi lovers.

- Focus on Freshness: The consistent emphasis on "fresher" and "perfectly fresh" fish highlights their commitment to quality ingredients, with the delicate flavor of fish being the star.
- "Hidden Gem" Status: Its somewhat "hidden" location adds to its allure as a discovery for those in the know, fostering a sense of exclusivity and appreciation among its patrons.
While Ai Sushi is lauded for its exceptional quality and authentic experience, which often comes with a premium price point, specific ongoing promotions were not widely advertised in the provided reviews. The focus appears to be on delivering a top-tier dining experience rather than consistent discount offers. However, for a restaurant of this caliber, potential "offers" for the local community might implicitly include:
- Omakase as a Curated Experience: While not a discount, the omakase (starting at $90-$105 per person) is presented as a valuable, comprehensive tasting journey, offering a premium selection that might be more cost-effective than ordering individual high-end pieces à la carte. One review noted a $60 omakase that felt like a great value for the premium items included.
- Seasonal Offerings: The omakase by nature features "finest seasonal seafood," providing a continuously fresh and unique offering to regular customers.
- BYOB Policy: As an unconfirmed but often mentioned feature in external reviews, being a BYOB establishment can significantly reduce the overall cost of dining for patrons, effectively acting as a form of value.
- Cash Payment Benefits: One external review mentioned "no 3% charge with cash payment," which acts as a small incentive for cash transactions.
For the most up-to-date information on any specific specials or events, it is always recommended to contact Ai Sushi directly via phone or check their official website, if available. Given its focus on high-quality and authentic preparation, the inherent value lies in the exceptional culinary experience itself.

Ai sushi Reviews
Pros:Best sushi I've ever had. Everything was fresher and more tender tasting than other restaurants in central NJ. The selection of fish and miscellaneous sea based critters is vast. First time trying sea urchin and monkfish liver. Did not disappoint. The omakase style was cool.Cons:Expensive af. The people sitting near us were snobby, but those are the type of people that go to expensive restaurants.
Mar 26, 2025 · Tyler IkeFrom the outside, it doesn't even look like there should be a restaurant here. Sit down on the quiet, almost intimate environment, however, and get treated to authentic Japanese cuisine at its best. Omikaze does not come inexpensively here, but worth the price: simple, beautiful, and without gimmicks. A favorite on a cold night, the ramen is a big, hot, savory bowl of wonderfulness that is hard to equal.
May 25, 2025 · Steven QuintavallaAbsolutely delicious. We have been several times now and have never had a bad experience - best sushi I've ever had.
May 10, 2025 · Alyse BastoneOmakase is just beautiful. You cannot eat this kinds of fish anywhere in NJ. They are meticulously prepared and chef’s experience and skill are written all over! If you want the quality food, close your eyes for the establishment decor. It is unimportant. You will be there for the quality food!
Oct 22, 2023 · YukiCelebrating my anniversary with the first experience with omakase style. I really excited tasting the different kind of fish+parts the chef prepared. Loved the environment sharing stories with other dinning there. The fish is very fresh and handpicked by the chef. According to a couple sitting next to us, this is the best Japanese restaurant in NJ according to their Japanese friends. I would highly recommend too.
