Delage primarily focuses on providing a refined and immersive dining experience.
Omakase-Style Dining: At its core, Delage is a chef's choice–style restaurant. They offer a multi-course prix fixe menu that changes frequently, showcasing California-inspired Japanese fare with a strong emphasis on seasonal and local ingredients. This unique approach means diners surrender their choices to the chef's expertise, leading to a surprise and delight with each course.
Sushi Bar Seating: A key feature of the omakase experience at Delage is the opportunity to sit at the sushi counter. This allows diners to watch the skilled chefs, like the highly praised Chef Chikara, prepare each piece of sushi right in front of them, offering an interactive and educational experience.
Sake Pairing: To complement their exquisite dishes, Delage offers an excellent sake pairing. This curated selection of sakes is chosen to enhance the flavors of each course, providing a holistic culinary experience. This service is highly recommended for those looking to elevate their meal.
Reservations: Due to its popularity and intimate size, Delage operates primarily by reservation. Booking in advance is highly recommended to secure a spot for this sought-after dining experience.
Delage stands out in the Bay Area's culinary scene due to several distinctive features and highlights that consistently earn it high praise.
Masterful Chef Chikara: Many reviews specifically laud Chef Chikara, referring to him as a "master." His expertise and artistry in preparing sushi and crafting the omakase menu are a significant draw, contributing to Delage's reputation as one of the best sushi/omakase experiences in the Bay Area, if not all of California.
Exceptional Omakase Menu: The restaurant's multi-course prix fixe omakase menu is the star. It's lauded for its creative and well-balanced flavor combinations, utilizing fresh, high-quality, and often sustainably sourced fish from Japan, New Zealand, and American waters. The menu frequently changes, ensuring a fresh experience with each visit.
Artful Presentation: Diners consistently comment on the beautiful presentation of the food, noting the use of "artistic bowls and plates." This attention to detail elevates the dining experience beyond just taste, making each course a visual delight.
Intimate and Knowledgeable Experience: With a small counter and a limited number of tables, Delage offers a very intimate dining setting. This allows for personalized service and the opportunity to engage with the chefs, who are noted for being "very knowledgeable" and willing to share insights about the dishes being served.
Excellent Sake Pairing: The carefully selected sake pairing is a highlight for many, expertly chosen to complement the intricate flavors of the omakase courses, enhancing the overall sensory experience.
California-Inspired Japanese Fare: While deeply rooted in traditional Japanese techniques, Delage's menu incorporates California-inspired elements, often featuring local and seasonal ingredients. This fusion offers a unique and fresh take on Japanese cuisine.
Perfect for Special Occasions: Repeatedly described as ideal for a "fancy night out," "special occasion," or "date night," Delage provides a sophisticated and memorable setting for celebrations.
Given Delage's focus on a high-end, omakase-style dining experience, it typically does not feature the same kind of daily promotions or happy hour specials that more casual restaurants might offer. The value at Delage comes from the exclusive, multi-course culinary journey crafted by the chef. However, establishments of this caliber might occasionally offer:
Special Themed Menus: For certain holidays or seasonal events, Delage might present a unique omakase menu with a specific theme or premium ingredients.
Guest Chef Collaborations: From time to time, Delage might host special dinners featuring collaborations with other renowned chefs, offering a unique, limited-time menu.
Wine or Sake Tasting Events: Beyond the standard sake pairing, there might be exclusive tasting events that delve deeper into specific sake breweries or wine regions.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on any special events or offerings, it is highly recommended to visit Delage's official website, follow their social media channels, or contact them directly. Due to the nature of their reservations, any special events are likely to be announced well in advance and may require pre-booking.

This is the best sushi/omakase in the Bay Area. I live in LA (and have tried most every sushi restaurant in the Bay and LA) but whenever I fly into Oakland, I always make reservations here. Chikara is a master. You will not be disappointed. The sake pairing is excellent!
March 23 · Anthony LuceroJust had dinner at Delage. It was such a delicious meal with wonderful service and very knowledgeable chefs preparing the sushi right in front of us. All of the flavor combinations were creative and well-balanced, and the food was presented very well with the artistic bowls and plates. Would definitely recommend this place for a fancy night out!
December 31 · BenThis place is a must go.One thing I look for in places like this is simple but unique flavors. The chefs here absolutely knocked it out of the park with every dish. The flavor combinations were incredible, the textures were spot on, and the plating was beautiful. The staff was really kind and helpful and the overall atmosphere was really laid back. Can't wait to come back.
February 18 · StebsEvery thing was so delicious. I love how creative the chef was to put together beautiful dishes with fresh ingredients. I love all the different flavors combinations, read the description on the menu. Not overpowering but go so well with all the ingredients. I love miso cream sauce with the black cod. I love the dessert at the end. Just perfect way to finish off the meal, not too sweet.
August 13 · Karen Chan8 course omakase experience - they get their fish fresh daily and incorporate seasonal ingredients into the menu. The flavors were simple yet complex and each course had it's own surprising element. Each dish is prepared was thoughtful in complimenting flavor and texture! The nigiri was exceptional - (if eaten in the correct order) the buildup of complexity and umami was a delight to experience. They were also accommodating for our dietary restrictions. Highly recommend this place!
