Friends Only is conveniently located at 1501 California St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA. Situated in the prestigious Nob Hill neighborhood, the restaurant offers a refined setting that complements its exquisite dining experience. Nob Hill is known for its elegant architecture, historic landmarks, and stunning views, making it a desirable destination for an evening out.
The central location on California Street means it's easily accessible from various parts of San Francisco. For those utilizing public transportation, numerous Muni bus lines serve the area, and the iconic California Street Cable Car provides a charming and quintessentially San Francisco way to arrive. While street parking might be available, it can sometimes be challenging in this bustling neighborhood, so considering ride-sharing services or public transport is often recommended for a stress-free visit. The area is also quite walkable, allowing diners to enjoy a pleasant stroll before or after their meal, soaking in the unique atmosphere of Nob Hill.
- Exclusive Omakase Dining: Friends Only offers a highly exclusive and intimate omakase experience. This means the menu is entirely left to the chef, who curates a multi-course tasting journey showcasing the freshest and most unique ingredients available.
- Dry-Aged Fish Specialties: A core focus of Friends Only is its expertise in dry-aging fish. This specialized technique enhances the texture and deepens the umami flavors of the fish, offering a distinctive taste profile not commonly found in traditional sushi restaurants. Guests can expect to savor meticulously aged bluefin tuna, tilefish, and other premium seafood.
- Curated Beverage Pairings: To complement the exquisite food, Friends Only provides a carefully selected range of beverages. This includes champagne to start the meal, reserve sake, and expertly crafted spirits. They also offer unique, Asian-inspired classic and modern cocktails.
- Intimate 10-Seat Setting: The restaurant is designed for an exclusive experience, featuring only 10 seats at the counter. This intimate setup allows for direct interaction with the chefs, offering diners a front-row view of the culinary artistry and a personalized dining journey.
- Accommodating Simple Requests: While it is an omakase experience, the staff at Friends Only are noted for being attentive and willing to accommodate simple requests regarding the food, ensuring a comfortable and personalized experience for each guest.
- Dessert and Finishing Sake Included: Unlike many omakase menus where dessert might be an optional add-on, Friends Only includes a delicious dessert as part of its culinary journey, along with a finishing dessert sake, providing a complete and satisfying conclusion to the meal.
- Unforgettable Flavor Explosions: Customers consistently rave about the "amazing flavor explosion" right from the first dish, with every item being described as exceptional and truly astonishing.
- Mastery of Uni (Sea Urchin): For uni enthusiasts, Friends Only is a must-visit. Patrons describe the uni as "absolutely delicious — fresh, rich, and unforgettable," confirming it's a highlight for lovers of this delicacy.
- Innovative Dry-Aging Technique: The restaurant specializes in dry-aged fish, a unique method that intensifies flavors and improves texture, setting it apart from other sushi establishments. This meticulous process ensures a milder, more umami-rich taste with superior texture.

- Warm and Attentive Staff: The chef and staff are frequently praised for their incredibly warm and attentive service, contributing significantly to a welcoming and enhanced dining experience.
- Casual Yet Refined Atmosphere: Despite being a high-end omakase restaurant, the atmosphere is noted as "very casual," fostering a comfortable environment where diners can relax and enjoy their meal while still receiving top-tier service.
- Research and Development Focus: Friends Only serves as a research and development space for the team behind Akikos, pushing creative boundaries and constantly refining their techniques to deliver an evolving art form in sushi.
- High-Quality, Luxe Ingredients: The menu features super luxe ingredients, including high-grade uni from Japan, Osetra caviar, and various expertly curated seafood selections, ensuring a truly indulgent experience.

The pricing for the omakase menu starts at $330 per person, which does not include beverages, a 20% service charge, sales tax, and the San Francisco mandate. A $100 per person deposit is required to secure a reservation, and this deposit is fully applied to your final bill. Given its high-end, exclusive nature and Michelin Guide recognition, the value is in the unparalleled culinary journey and the use of premium, meticulously prepared ingredients. It is a destination reserved for those seeking a truly exceptional and indulgent dining experience, where the "special offer" is the unique and innovative approach to Japanese cuisine itself. May 29, 2025 · HanRight from the first item, an amazing flavor explosion. Every item was exceptional, and lovers of uni won't be found lacking.Dessert isn't listed on the menu, but it is included. So is a starting champagne and a finishing dessert sake. The price is reserved only for incredibly rich patrons though. Make sure everyone is in the mood for sashimi and seafood.Atmosphere is very casual. We were the quietest couple inside, and had no problems keeping to ourselves while still communicating with the staff. They will also accommodate simple requests with the food as well!

Emphasis on dry aging much of the fish… hadn’t had that before; delicious. Not afraid to use uni :). Appreciated ginger chunks vs sliced.Tempura’d, vs boiled or raw, milt was yummy, but a tad timid.Fantastic experience.
