Gen Kai Japanese Restaurant Reviews
So I will start off by saying I have walked past this resturant hundreds of times coming out of the market next door. I am a bit sad that the first time I go in is their last day open. The service was great and I could understand how hard today was on them. The table set up was a bit odd until we found out they are retiring and closing up. (Which makes sense from some of the bad reviews people have left the last month and the tables) It didnt bother or stop me from giving them my business. Some of the best food I have eating was in places less concerned with atmosphere. I ordered the chicken Katsu curry just like the lady under my review. My food was completely opposite of hers. The curry had good flavor and not over powering. The chicken was tender and rice cooked perfectly. It was exactly how I expected it to taste. I never got the impression of it being reheated or pre-made. I would certainly eat here again if they were not closing down. Was a excellent experience and enjoyed talking with other customers while having our meals. Thanks for the food and enjoy retirement.
February 18 · Mee KleanThis place is so good we had to come here twice on our one week trip! First time I got the bento box with chicken and my partner got a bowl. It was so good and so flavorful. The chicken was crispy and juicy, sushi was fresh, soup was flavorful, and salad was fresh. Second time we both got the shoyu ramen, mine with a garlic bomb and my partners was with chili oil. The pork in the ramen was so delicious and the garlic bomb was so flavorful. My partner wished his was hotter on the spicy level but he likes his food to burn a lot. Either way he would get it again because of the flavor. This place is so good and the employees are so nice and attentive.
April 08 · Brianna HAlways looking for something new and on a cold day we found Gen Kai's. It was nice and quiet so we got great service. The tables were clean and the food was colorful and flavorful. I suggest taking the Art bus if work on Central it was quick and easy to walk too.
January 02 · Angelo MitchellI'll start with the positive. The service was very good. The negative list is unfortunately longer. I dined around 12:30 on a Friday, which should be peak lunchtime hours. The restaurant was empty when we arrived, which could've been a harbinger of things to come, but I'd heard good things. My husband and I were seated immediately at a makeshift bar made of seven single tables pushed together that make up the only seating in the restaurant. Kinda odd, but ok. We both ordered the chicken katsu curry. The portion size was pretty fair for the price, but both the curry sauce and fried chicken were deeply disappointing. Each were barely warm, and the chicken had clearly been reheated rather than freshly fried. The curry flavor itself was pretty ho-hum, with a lack of depth or seasoning. Basically, it just seemed like everything was from a package, which whether it was or not, is not good cooking. I will not return and I do not recommend this place.
December 30 · Michaella MaddryStopped by for lunch on a Sunday. We were seated immediately but, presumably due to Covid, they only can seat five people so several groups after us had to wait. I had ramen and my wife a Tonkatsu bento box. Both were very good—not the best Japanese food I have had but a good lunch at a very reasonable price. Service was great.
