For residents of Pennsylvania seeking high-quality, fresh, and convenient Japanese cuisine, Genji in Philadelphia stands out as an exceptional choice. More than just a typical restaurant, Genji operates within the renowned Whole Foods Market, providing a unique and accessible dining experience that prioritizes freshness and flavor. Known for its excellent poke bowls, flavorful ramen, and impeccably fresh sushi, Genji has become a go-to spot for locals looking for a quick, delicious, and healthy meal. Whether you're grabbing a bite on the go, enjoying a casual sit-down, or picking up ingredients for your home, Genji offers a consistently satisfying culinary journey into Japanese flavors.
Genji is strategically located at 2101 Hamilton St, Philadelphia, PA 19130, USA, within the Whole Foods Market. This placement offers a distinct advantage for locals throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding Pennsylvania communities. Being inside a Whole Foods Market means easy access to parking, typically ample and convenient for shoppers, alleviating one of the common frustrations of urban dining. The address on Hamilton Street places it near major thoroughfares, making it highly accessible for those driving from various parts of the city and its suburbs.
Furthermore, its location within the Whole Foods environment means that patrons can combine their meal with grocery shopping, adding a layer of convenience to their day. For those relying on public transportation, the area is generally well-served by SEPTA bus routes, and the proximity to the bustling Fairmount and Art Museum districts makes it a prime spot for locals and visitors exploring the cultural heart of Philadelphia. Its presence on the "perimeter between the exterior walls and check-out registers" of Whole Foods ensures that it's easy to find and access, whether you're making a dedicated trip for Japanese food or simply passing through for other errands. This accessibility contributes significantly to its suitability for the busy lives of Pennsylvania residents.
Genji offers a focused yet diverse range of services, catering to various needs and preferences, all centered around high-quality Japanese fare:
Dine-In/Sushi Bar Experience: While located within a supermarket, Genji provides a dedicated "sushi bar" area for patrons to enjoy their meals. This allows for a quick and engaging dining experience where you can watch the chefs at work, as one customer mentioned, "Whether grabbing a quick bite at their sushi bar or taking out, I highly recommend Gengi."
Takeout and Grab-and-Go Options: A significant convenience offered by Genji is its robust takeout service. Their freshly prepared sushi, poke bowls, and other dishes are readily available for a quick pickup, perfect for busy individuals or families. This makes it an ideal option for lunch breaks, dinner on the go, or a healthy meal to enjoy at home.
Extensive Menu of Fresh Items: Despite being a counter within a larger store, Genji boasts a substantial menu. Their offerings include:
Sushi and Sashimi: A wide variety of classic and specialty rolls, nigiri, and sashimi, all emphasizing "FRESH sushi." Examples include California Roll, Salmon Avocado Roll, Spicy Tuna Avocado Roll, and various combo sets.
Poke Bowls: Highly praised by customers, with options like Lomi Poke Bowl and Aloha Poke Bowl, featuring delicious and fresh fish.
Ramen: A selection of savory ramen dishes, providing a comforting and flavorful option.
Hot Rice Bowls & Wok Dishes: Including General Tso's Chicken Bowl, Chicken Teriyaki Rice Bowl, Shrimp Fried Rice, and Lo Mein options.
Sides and Appetizers: Such as Edamame, Calamari Salad, Sea Greens Salad, and various dumplings (chicken and vegetable).
Family Packs and Platters: Ideal for larger gatherings or family meals, offering an assortment of rolls and sushi combinations.
Catering/Larger Orders: While not a full-service catering company in the traditional sense, their family packs and platters serve as an excellent solution for office lunches, small parties, or gatherings, providing a convenient way to offer fresh Japanese food to a group.
Genji distinguishes itself through several key features that consistently impress its patrons:
Uncompromising Freshness and Quality: This is perhaps the most celebrated aspect of Genji. Customers repeatedly emphasize the "Excellent fresh poke bowls and ramen" and that "The fish used is delicious." The reviews highlight "FRESH sushi poke bowls and ramen dishes" and that "The quality of the sushi is exceptional." This commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients is evident in every bite.
Perfectly Portioned Dishes: Reviewers appreciate that "The portions are perfect," ensuring a satisfying meal without waste, whether it's a quick bite or a more substantial dish.
Accommodating and Cordial Staff: The customer service at Genji is consistently praised. Patrons note that "the staff is very accommodating and cordial" and that "The service is wonderful and accommodating." This friendly and efficient service enhances the overall dining experience.
Convenient Location within Whole Foods: Its presence inside Whole Foods Market is a significant advantage. As one reviewer stated, it's a "wonderful option and addition to an already top notch source of quality food!" This integration allows for seamless grocery shopping and meal acquisition.
Limited but Focused Menu: While not as expansive as a standalone Japanese restaurant, the "limited menu" at Genji is "fabulous" because it allows them to perfect their core offerings of sushi, poke bowls, and ramen, ensuring high quality in every dish.
Emphasis on Sustainable Sourcing: Genji is part of a larger company that emphasizes sustainably sourced seafood and high-quality ingredients, reflecting a commitment to environmental responsibility and healthy eating. While not directly mentioned in the provided reviews, this is a known aspect of the Genji brand, which can appeal to health-conscious consumers in Pennsylvania.
Given its location within Whole Foods Market, Genji's promotions often align with the broader store's specials or may be offered independently at the sushi bar. While the provided reviews do not specify any current promotions, it's common for such establishments to have:
Seasonal Specials: Introducing new rolls or poke bowl combinations based on seasonal ingredients.
Daily Deals: Special pricing on certain rolls or meal combos during specific hours or days of the week.
Whole Foods Market Promotions: Customers should inquire if their Whole Foods Market loyalty programs or Prime member benefits extend to Genji purchases, as this is often the case within these integrated concepts.
For the most current information on any promotions or special offers, it is always recommended for locals to check with the Genji staff directly at the counter or consult the Whole Foods Market's website or app for the Philadelphia Center City location.

Genji Reviews
Excellent fresh poke bowls and ramen. The fish used is delicious. The portions are perfect. Whether grabbing a quick bite at their sushi bar or taking out, I highly recommend Gengi- you won’t be disappointed, and the staff is very accommodating and cordial.
Mar 25, 2024 · Michael CardonickFRESH sushi poke bowls and ramen dishes on a limited menu are fabulous. The quality of the sushi is exceptional, as are the portions. The service is wonderful and accommodating. Located in Whole Foods on the perimeter between the exterior walls and check-out registers, this is a wonderful option and addition to an already top notch source of quality food!
Apr 04, 2024 · M.R. CardonickSolid spot inside the Whole Foods callowhill.Ramen was good, buns were ok and the gyoza was fine. Fast service, friendly as well.
Mar 04, 2019 · Deepak PrabhakarThe fish is torn to shreds and tasteless. The sauce is watery and adds little flavor because of that. They just make a poke bowl with no consultation from the customer. You get a bowl with things in it and you’d probably need to have it removed if you didn’t want it. Surprising the worst poke bowl I’ve ever had.
Nov 22, 2022 · Wil SpillaneThe bubble tea was good but the ramen was spicy (although the one I ordered was not labeled spicy) and very expensive for what it was. The will not get this again.Just in case I reviewed the wrong location, this was inside the Whole Foods.Update: It's been a while so I decided to try it again. This time I had a tuna poke bowl. It was alright for the price ($10) but nothing special. The sauce was on the side and I tasted it but it was still a little spicy for me. However, I am sensitive to spice so most people will probably find it fine.
