Hwal A Kwang Jang Introduce
For those in California seeking a distinctive and authentic seafood experience, particularly with a Korean flair, Hwal A Kwang Jang in Los Angeles presents a compelling option. This isn't your typical Japanese sushi bar; instead, it specializes in Korean-style sashimi, offering a unique approach to fresh seafood that distinguishes it within the vibrant culinary landscape of Koreatown. Local diners looking for something beyond the conventional will find Hwal A Kwang Jang to be an intriguing and often rewarding destination.
Hwal A Kwang Jang focuses on three critical elements that define an authentic Korean-style seafood restaurant: the freshness and texture of the sashimi, the quality and variety of the accompanying side dishes (known as "banchan"), and the deliciousness of the maeun-tang (spicy fish stew). According to enthusiastic patrons, this establishment consistently excels in all three areas, making it a highly recommended spot for a genuine Korean seafood feast.
While some past experiences might suggest a rushed atmosphere or minor issues with order accuracy, the overarching sentiment from many customers points to the exceptional quality of the food. Instead of numerous inexpensive fried side dishes, diners are often delighted by offerings such as abalone porridge, clam soup, salmon head, and a whole platter of fresh seafood, all complementing the main sashimi dishes. This commitment to high-quality, abundant accompaniments truly elevates the dining experience and highlights the traditional Korean approach to seafood. If you're in California and curious about exploring authentic Korean sashimi, Hwal A Kwang Jang promises a memorable culinary journey.

Hwal A Kwang Jang specializes in delivering an authentic Korean-style seafood and sashimi experience. Their services are centered around fresh, high-quality ingredients and traditional preparations.
-
Korean-Style Sashimi (Hwe): The core offering is fresh sashimi prepared in the Korean style. This often involves serving thick, generous cuts of various fresh fish, emphasizing the natural flavor and texture of the seafood. The focus is on the raw fish itself, accompanied by traditional Korean dipping sauces and wraps.
-
Live Seafood Options: While not explicitly detailed, the "Hwal A" in the name (활아) often implies "live fish," suggesting that the restaurant may offer live seafood selections, allowing customers to choose their catch for ultimate freshness. This is a common and highly prized feature in authentic Korean seafood establishments.
-
Generous and High-Quality Side Dishes (Banchan): A significant highlight of Hwal A Kwang Jang, as noted by customers, is the exceptional quality and variety of its accompanying side dishes. Unlike places that offer numerous small, inexpensive banchan, this restaurant provides substantial and premium sides, such as abalone porridge, clam soup, salmon head, and large platters of fresh seafood, which are almost meals in themselves.
-
Maeun-Tang (Spicy Fish Stew): A staple of Korean seafood dining, Hwal A Kwang Jang offers maeun-tang, a delicious spicy fish stew often made from the remnants of the fish used for sashimi (like the bones and head). This hot, flavorful soup is a perfect complement to the fresh raw fish.
-
Lobster Sashimi: The restaurant offers whole lobster sashimi, a premium and visually impressive dish. After serving the sashimi, the lobster claws and other parts can often be taken back to the kitchen to be prepared into a soup, offering a two-course experience from a single ingredient.
-
Diverse Seafood Selection: While sashimi is the focus, the comprehensive seafood platters and the emphasis on "fresh seafood" suggest a broader array of marine delicacies beyond just typical fish sashimi.
Hwal A Kwang Jang offers several distinct features and highlights that make it a notable destination for Korean-style seafood in Los Angeles.
-
Authentic Korean Sashimi Experience: Unlike Japanese sushi, Hwal A Kwang Jang specializes in Korean-style sashimi (hwe), which often involves thicker cuts of fish, served with unique Korean dipping sauces (like cho-gochujang or ssamjang) and accompanying leafy greens for wrapping. This provides a different texture and flavor profile that is highly prized by those seeking genuine Korean culinary traditions.
-
Exceptional Freshness of Seafood: A primary highlight, as repeatedly noted by customers, is the incredible freshness of the sashimi. The restaurant's name, "Hwal A Kwang Jang," often translates to something akin to "Live Fish Plaza," implicitly indicating a commitment to serving very fresh, and potentially live, seafood. This freshness directly contributes to the superior taste and texture of their offerings.
-
Premium and Abundant Side Dishes (Banchan): A standout feature is the quality and generosity of the side dishes. Instead of a large quantity of standard, inexpensive banchan, Hwal A Kwang Jang provides substantial and high-quality accompaniments such as rich abalone porridge, comforting clam soup, savory salmon head, and extensive platters of various fresh seafood items. These banchan elevate the entire meal and offer significant value.
-
Delicious Maeun-Tang (Spicy Fish Stew): The maeun-tang is consistently highlighted as a must-try. Made from the remaining parts of the fish after sashimi preparation, this spicy, robust stew is a perfect warm and flavorful complement to the cold sashimi, showcasing another traditional aspect of Korean seafood dining.
-
Specialized Lobster Sashimi: The option to order a whole lobster prepared as sashimi, with the claws then made into a soup, offers a luxurious and unique two-part dining experience. This highlights the restaurant's capability with high-end seafood preparations.
-
Focus on Core Quality: Customers emphasize that Hwal A Kwang Jang "checks off all 3 boxes" for a Korean-style seafood restaurant: sashimi freshness/texture, quality of side dishes, and delicious maeun-tang. This focus on these core elements ensures a consistently satisfying and authentic meal for those who understand and appreciate this specific culinary style.
While specific, regularly advertised promotions or discount offers for Hwal A Kwang Jang are not prominently detailed in the provided public information or commonly found in standard business listings, the restaurant's value proposition often lies in the comprehensive nature of its meals and the quality of its included offerings.
Instead of traditional discounts, the "special offer" at Hwal A Kwang Jang could be considered the inherent generosity and quality of its full dining experience, particularly the banchan (side dishes) that accompany the main sashimi orders. As highlighted by customer reviews, patrons receive premium side dishes like abalone porridge, clam soup, salmon head, and extensive platters of fresh seafood, which are substantial additions that might be considered extra charges or not offered at other establishments. This inclusion of high-quality, diverse, and generous side dishes effectively enhances the overall value of your meal, making it a substantial feast beyond just the raw fish.
The experience of ordering a full lobster sashimi, where the claws are subsequently prepared into a soup, also represents a unique "two-for-one" type of value, providing a complete utilization of the ingredient and adding another course to the meal without an additional main dish charge.

Hwal A Kwang Jang Reviews
We ordered 2 full lobster sashimi, when they took the claws back to the kitchen to make into a soup, only 1 pair of claws came back. When we asked what happened to the other pair…they made excuses about it being too small and they threw it away…. It was not small at all.Food was not bad, but it felt very rushed and disorganized…& the place is super small.
May 31, 2025 · erick pangilinanIn a Korean style restaurant like this, you just need to know 3 things. How fresh is the sashimi (how they slice/texture), quality of the extra side menu, and how delicious is the maeun-tang soup.Instead of multiple cheap fried side dishes, we were given abalone porridge, clam soup, salmon head, and a whole platter of fresh seafood. This restaurant checked off all 3 boxes and I recommend it if you want authentic Korean style seafood/sashimi.
Dec 28, 2023 · DavidThe raw fish tasted good when eating it but… There were too many flies and I got food poisoning due to the fish not being fresh enough in less than an hour after eating here. Plus the mulhoe cold soup base was too sour compared to the usual mulhoe that can be found or made.

Nov 17, 2024 · Jane Su (Yu-Chen)Wow... talk about a literal hole in the wall restaurant. I've lived in LA for 30 years but I've never heard of this place.First off, the vibes of this place is pretty unique in a Korean way. The interior is pretty cramped, they play Korean music from the 70s & 80s, and the servers help you so long as it doesn't inconvenience them too much. It definitely helps if someone in your party can speak Korean, but it's no guarantee that you'll receive great service.Even if the service can be bad, the food is absolutely amazing. I need to know where they get their fish from because the "fresh" sashimi I get at Korean markets don't come close to what this restaurant serves. I can never go back to eating market sashimi again. I'm ruined. The portions are absolutely massive as well. My family of 4 got the Combo C but it was way too much food for us. We ended up taking almost half of the sashimi home. Definitely get a serving size less than what they recommend.
