Joy of Tokyo on Pelham Road in Greenville is known for several key features that draw in local customers, as well as some aspects that have garnered mixed feedback:
Delicious Hibachi and Rolls: A significant highlight is the taste of their core dishes. One reviewer enthusiastically noted, "We had the Chicken and Steak Hibachi, spring rolls, and California rolls. All of it was absolutely delicious! The best Hibachi I have had since being in California. I highly recommend it." This underscores the high quality of their hibachi and popular sushi rolls.
High Recommendation for Hibachi: The strong positive sentiment for their hibachi dishes suggests that these are a reliable and satisfying choice for many patrons.
Fast-Casual Convenience: Joy of Tokyo's model is built on providing quick service, making it ideal for a fast lunch or dinner when time is a factor. This efficiency is a core feature that appeals to busy locals.
Affordable Japanese Food: As part of the Joy of Tokyo chain, this location aims to make Japanese cuisine accessible at a reasonable price point, offering good value for money compared to more upscale Japanese dining options.
However, it's also important to acknowledge areas where customer experiences have been less favorable, as this provides a complete picture for potential diners:
Order Accuracy and Allergy Concerns: A significant issue raised was related to order accuracy and handling of dietary restrictions. A customer ordered "no zucchini," but the food arrived "filled with zucchini." This is a critical concern, especially for allergies.
Poor Customer Service Response to Issues: The follow-up interaction with the restaurant after the allergy incident was highly negative. The customer stated that the staff "never once apologize just said I should have asked to have it cooked separately" and then implied that even cooking separately wouldn't guarantee no zucchini. This response demonstrated a lack of empathy and a reluctance to resolve the issue, leading the customer to say, "I wouldn't recommend this location."
Manager vs. Employee Demeanor: The review highlights a disparity in staff professionalism, noting, "The employees were nicer than the manager," which suggests a potential issue with management's approach to customer complaints.
Impact on Recommendation: Due to the negative experience with the allergy and customer service, the customer explicitly stated, "I wouldn't recommend this location," despite the initial positive experience with the food's taste.
Based on the provided customer reviews and general information about the Joy of Tokyo chain, specific, explicit promotional offers for the Pelham Road location are not detailed. However, the restaurant's operational model itself implies a consistent value proposition:
Affordable Everyday Pricing: Joy of Tokyo's fundamental strategy is to offer Japanese cuisine at an accessible price point, making it an economical choice for regular meals. Their menu prices for hibachi and teriyaki plates are designed to be competitive and generally lower than traditional full-service Japanese steakhouses.
Value-Driven Menu Items: Their menu often features combo meals (e.g., steak and chicken hibachi) and bento box-style offerings that provide a variety of food for a set price, implicitly offering good value.
For the most up-to-date information on any potential current promotions, daily specials, or bundle deals, local customers in Greenville are encouraged to:
Visit their official website: Joy of Tokyo's official website often lists current promotions or special offers, and provides access to their online ordering portals where deals might be applied.

For residents of Greenville, South Carolina, Joy of Tokyo on Pelham Road offers a particular type of dining experience that can be highly suitable for certain needs within the local community. It positions itself as a convenient and affordable option for Japanese-inspired fast-casual dining, a niche that appeals to many busy individuals and families.
The primary appeal for locals lies in the delicious taste of its core offerings and its overall convenience. The positive feedback for dishes like the "Chicken and Steak Hibachi, spring rolls, and California rolls" being "absolutely delicious" and "the best Hibachi I have had since being in California" speaks volumes about the quality of their most popular items. For those craving these specific Japanese flavors without the time commitment or higher price of a traditional steakhouse, Joy of Tokyo provides a satisfying solution. The emphasis on quick service, coupled with options for takeout and delivery, makes it an attractive choice for efficient meal solutions in Greenville's fast-paced environment.
However, it's crucial for locals to be aware of potential challenges, particularly regarding order accuracy and customer service when issues arise. The detailed account of an allergy concern being mishandled, including a lack of apology and an unhelpful response from management, indicates a significant area for improvement. For diners with dietary restrictions or specific requests, this incident highlights the importance of clear communication and potentially double-checking orders. While the food itself may be excellent, a negative service experience can significantly impact overall satisfaction and willingness to return.
Despite this, for many, Joy of Tokyo remains a go-to spot because it generally delivers on its promise of affordable and tasty Japanese fare. Its broad menu, including hibachi, teriyaki, sushi, rice bowls, and poke bowls, offers enough variety to satisfy different cravings. For locals who prioritize quick, flavorful, and budget-friendly meals and are comfortable with the fast-casual model, this location on Pelham Road can be a consistent choice.
In conclusion, Joy of Tokyo on Pelham Road is suitable for Greenville locals who:
Are looking for delicious and authentic-tasting hibachi and other Japanese fast-casual dishes.
Value quick service and convenient takeout or delivery options.
Seek an affordable Japanese meal without the formality or cost of a full-service restaurant.
While a past customer service issue involving allergies warrants caution and careful communication, the positive reviews for the food's taste and overall convenience suggest it can still be a reliable option for many in the community.

Joy of Tokyo Reviews
We had the Chicken and Steak Hibachi, spring rolls, and California rolls. All of it was absolutely delicious! The best Hibachi I have had since being in California. I highly recommend it.
Aug 05, 2024 · Tracie EdwardsI asked for no zucchini. Got home and filled with zucchini. First.. I live 20 mins away, I didn't see the zucchini until I started moving the vegetables. I'm allergic to zucchini. I talked to someone over the phone and they never once apologize just said I should have asked to have it cooked separately. I drive back up there and then she said even if we cook it separately we can't guarantee there would be no zucchini. First off why are u telling me this as if you don't want to fix my food??!. I wouldn't recommend this location. The employees were nicer than three manager.
Jan 18, 2025 · Talicia DavisAbsolutely the most sorry sushi experience I've ever had in my 28 years of life. Literally flavorless, even with the poor quality mock Wasabi and ginger, and the rice was chewy and overcooked, the seaweed tasted stale. A waste of money.
Jan 13, 2025 · Ashley CorbettDisappointed for me, friend got chicken and rice lunch, said it was good, I wasnot that hungry and ordered fried calamari and spring roll. Mine was terrible Drink machine was very dirty. I will not be going back.
Aug 23, 2022 · B LMost horrible tasting, dried out food I have ever eaten. On top of that I ordered extra bite sauce and got all the way back home with no Sauce at all.
