Kamado Sushi specializes in delivering a high-caliber Japanese dining experience, with a particular emphasis on fresh sushi and sashimi. Their offerings showcase a dedication to quality and traditional techniques. Here’s a detailed overview of their services:
- Omakase Dining: This is a significant highlight and a core offering. Kamado Sushi provides an omakase experience where diners entrust the chef, Jin, to select and prepare a multi-course meal using the freshest seasonal fish. Options include:
- 12-piece Omakase Sushi: Accompanied by fresh wasabi, sushi ginger, house-made Tosa soy sauce, and miso soup. The chef can tailor the menu for allergies.
- 15-piece Omakase Sushi: A more extensive selection, also served with fresh accompaniments.
- Omakase selections often feature unique, seasonal fish flown in daily from Japan, providing an exceptional and ever-changing culinary adventure.
- A La Carte Sushi and Sashimi: Beyond omakase, Kamado Sushi offers an impressive selection of individual nigiri and sashimi pieces, featuring both common and rare cuts. These include:
- Nigiri & Sashimi: A wide range including Aji (Horse Mackerel), Amaebi (Sweet Raw Shrimp), Anago (Saltwater Eel), Ankimo (Steamed Monkfish Liver Pâté), Chu-toro (Medium Fatty Bluefin Tuna), Hon-maguro (Bluefin Tuna Loin), O-toro (Fatty Bluefin Tuna Belly), Sake (King Salmon cured with Konbu), Hirame (Halibut cured with Konbu), Hotate (Hokkaido Scallop), Uni (Sea Urchin), and many more seasonal and specialized fish.
- Customers have noted that Salmon and Hirame nigiris are generally priced at an "average" level for their quality.
- Maki (Roll Sushi): While the focus is on nigiri and omakase, Kamado Sushi also offers a selection of classic and specialty sushi rolls:
- Popular Rolls: Such as California Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, and Crunch Roll.
- Unique Rolls: Including Battera Sushi (Osaka style box-pressed mackerel or salmon with white kelp), and others like Rock & Roll, Negi Hama Roll, and Salmon Skin Roll.
- Kitchen Appetizers and Hot Dishes: A variety of hot Japanese dishes complement their sushi offerings:
- Appetizers: Agedashi Tofu, Gyoza (homemade Japanese dumplings), Chicken Karaage, various Tempura dishes, Ika Yaki (grilled squid), and more.
- Donburi (Rice Bowls): Such as Chirashi Special (assorted sashimi over rice), Tekka Don (tuna over rice), Sake Oyako Don (salmon and salmon roe over rice), and Unazu Dinner (grilled eel).
- Noodles: Including Tempura Udon, Yaki Udon (pan-fried udon), and Seafood Soba/Udon.
- Grilled Entrees: Highlights like Miso Glazed Black Cod and Saba Shioyaki (grilled mackerel).
- Katsu Dinners: Chicken Katsu and Tonkatsu options.
- Beverages: A selection of Japanese sake (unfiltered, fruity, refreshing), Japanese beers (Sapporo, Kirin, Asahi), and soft drinks like Ramune are available. Wine options are also offered.
- Takeout Service: Kamado Sushi facilitates online ordering for pickup through platforms like Toast and Orderspoon, allowing customers to enjoy their high-quality meals at home.
Kamado Sushi possesses several distinctive features and highlights that make it a truly special dining experience for locals in the California region:
- Chef Jin's Expertise and Vision: Chef Jin is consistently highlighted as an "incredible chef" with a profound understanding of sushi. His dedication to overseeing "daily fresh fish flown in from Japan" is a cornerstone of the restaurant's quality, allowing for a truly authentic and seasonal experience that stands out.
- Michelin-Comparable Omakase at Neighborhood Prices: This is arguably Kamado Sushi's most compelling feature. The omakase experience is noted as "comparable to the Michelin sushi spots in SF" but offered at a "neighborhood price with neighborhood feel." This provides incredible value for high-end quality, making exceptional sushi accessible.
- Unparalleled Freshness of Fish: The commitment to sourcing fish directly from Japan on a daily basis ensures an extraordinary level of freshness that is difficult to find elsewhere. This focus on premium ingredients elevates every dish.
- Intimate and Cozy Ambiance: The restaurant is described as a "small" and "minimalist space" with "comfortable chairs" and a "cozy atmosphere." This allows for a more focused and personal dining experience, particularly at the sushi bar where patrons can interact with Chef Jin.
- Diverse and Unique Fish Selection: Beyond the standard offerings, Kamado Sushi frequently features "exciting, unusual specimens" of seasonal fish, some only available for a few weeks a year. This provides an ever-evolving menu for adventurous palates.
- Authentic Preparation: Chef Jin's philosophy of "leav the fish alone" and preferring to taste its "full, unadulterated symphony" speaks to a deep respect for the ingredients and traditional Japanese preparation, often including real, grated wasabi and house-made Tosa soy sauce.
- Beyond Sushi Offerings: While sushi is the star, the menu extends to well-executed traditional Japanese hot dishes like Miso Glazed Black Cod (marinated for 40 hours) and Chawanmushi, showcasing a broader culinary capability.
- Loyal Local Following: The sentiment of being "so lucky to have this gem in our neighborhood" underscores the strong bond and appreciation locals have for Kamado Sushi.
While Kamado Sushi is recognized for offering high-quality sushi that is "well worth" its price, specific "promotions" in the traditional sense (like discount days or BOGO deals) are not extensively highlighted in public reviews, aligning with its positioning as a more upscale, ingredient-focused establishment. However, the true "special offer" at Kamado Sushi lies in its value proposition for the quality it delivers:
- "Neighborhood Price with Neighborhood Feel" for Michelin-Comparable Omakase: The primary "promotion" is the inherent value of their omakase. Customers explicitly state that the experience rivals "Michelin sushi spots in SF" but comes at a significantly more accessible price point (e.g., $85 for 12 pieces or $100 for 15 pieces). This makes high-end sushi more attainable for local residents.
- Seasonal Offerings from Japan: The daily arrival of fresh fish flown in from Japan is a continuous "special." It means that every visit can bring a new, unique culinary discovery that isn't always available at other sushi establishments, making it a consistent draw for adventurous diners.
- Chirashi Bowl Value: While noted as "on the expensive side" for a small chirashi bowl at $30, the quality of the sashimi pieces included likely provides significant value for those looking for a diverse selection of fresh fish.
- Consideration of Gift Cards: Kamado Sushi offers gift cards, which can be an excellent way for locals to treat friends and family to this high-quality experience, potentially spreading the "special" of their unique offerings.
For the most current information on any rotating specials or seasonal menu additions that might be perceived as promotional, it's always best for customers to directly inquire when visiting or placing an order, as daily fresh fish specials are a dynamic aspect of their menu.
For those eager to experience the exceptional sushi and omakase at Kamado Sushi, here is their contact information:
- Address: 1400 Shattuck Ave. store 1, Berkeley, CA 94709, USA
- Phone: (510) 540-5000
- Mobile Phone (same as above): +1 510-540-5000
These contact details provide direct lines for reservations, inquiries about their daily fresh fish selection, or for placing takeout orders, ensuring that locals can easily connect with this highly-regarded establishment.
For the discerning residents of California, particularly those in the vibrant East Bay, Kamado Sushi in Berkeley stands out as an exceptionally suitable and highly cherished dining destination. It perfectly encapsulates what many locals seek in a premium, yet accessible, culinary experience.
Firstly, its status as a "neighborhood gem" in the esteemed North Shattuck Avenue district makes it incredibly convenient and appealing. Its location within a lively and accessible area, coupled with the potential for easy parking and public transit access, ensures that it's a practical choice for a special dinner or a spontaneous high-quality meal.
Secondly, and most importantly, Kamado Sushi delivers an unparalleled level of quality that is truly "comparable to the Michelin sushi spots in SF." Chef Jin's dedication to sourcing "daily fresh fish flown in from Japan" means that patrons are consistently treated to an authentic and exceptional taste. While some may note it's "not the cheapest sushi in the area," the consensus is that the experience is "well worth it," affirming the outstanding value for the caliber of food received. This balance of high quality and what is perceived as a "neighborhood price" makes world-class sushi genuinely accessible to the Berkeley community.
Furthermore, the intimate, cozy ambiance and the attentive service contribute to a highly personalized and enjoyable dining experience. Whether engaging with Chef Jin at the sushi bar for an omakase journey or enjoying a quiet meal with friends, the atmosphere enhances the appreciation for the meticulously prepared dishes. For locals who prioritize fresh, authentic Japanese cuisine, an elevated dining experience, and the unique opportunity to savor seasonal delicacies from Japan without the full Michelin price tag, Kamado Sushi is undoubtedly a prime and cherished destination in the heart of Berkeley.

Kamado Sushi Reviews
We are so lucky to have this gem in our neighborhood. Jin is an incredible chef, overseeing daily fresh fish flown in from Japan, his omakase is comparable to the Michelin sushi spots in sf. … but for a neighborhood price with neighborhood feel.
March 30 · Samantha GoodA small chirashi bowl with fewer than 10 pieces of sashimi costs $30, the same as the Unagi Don. While both dishes tasted good, they were on the expensive side. Salmon and Hirame nigiris are about the average.
October 02 · Hannah JinAn excellent dinner in every way! The seaweed salad was real seaweed: a melange of 2 kinds and perfectly seasoned. Not the day-glo sweet gloppy stuff that some restaurants serve. The tempura was crispy + crackly, piping hot, plentiful and served with a mild yummy dipping sauce. The sushi was generously sliced, super fresh and melts in your mouth. Our server was attention and friendly but gave us space. The owner and sushi chef, Jin (sp?) is a real gem. He knows his stuff inside and out and cares about his clients. He is there almost every night working at the bar to make sure everyone gets the best of everything. Thank you! You are our favorite sushi restaurant ever!
March 12 · Wuin HopkinsFirst time at this place, chosen according to locality and the reviews. Decided to order my first ever omakase, which was delicious and special, albeit expensive. Which is to say, with that and the poor service (I could not have been friendlier), I can't say it was a good value. They did not even thank me for dining there, which must mean, they really weren't interested in my feeling valued). And, I do not live in Berkeley, nor in a town which is even similarly hipster, intellectual or high income. But with that, I was generous with the tip, because one still has to have manners, even if they did not!
March 30 · Arthur BI'm so excited to have found this place! They offer so many types of fish that I've never seen in other restaurants before. Probably not the best spot for people who want rolls with 8 ingredients and 5 sauces but if you want high quality fresh nigiri/sashimi, this is for you.
