It's an invitation to explore the subtle complexities and artistic presentation of traditional Japanese flavors, right here in the heart of the Queen City.

Kappo En is discreetly located at 1941 E 7th St, Charlotte, NC 28204. This address places it within the vibrant Elizabeth neighborhood, a popular and easily accessible area for many in Charlotte and surrounding North Carolina communities. However, what makes Kappo En's location particularly intriguing is its unique setup: it's "discreetly located in the back of Menya Daruma," another well-regarded Japanese eatery, with its dining room accessible through a "concealed doorway." This adds to its "speak easy vibe" and exclusive feel.
While the location is central, parking can be limited in their lot, particularly during evening hours. Patrons are advised that "additional paid parking is available in the parking deck across the street at Elizabeth on Seventh." For maximum convenience, especially for those celebrating with sake pairings, utilizing ride-share services is also a "convenient option." This thoughtful guidance helps ensure a smooth arrival for guests, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the dining experience once inside.
Kappo En provides an exclusive and highly curated Japanese dining experience focused primarily on its Omakase tasting menu:
Japanese Omakase Tasting Menu: This is the core offering, providing a multi-course culinary journey where the chef selects and prepares each dish based on seasonal ingredients and traditional Kappo techniques. The Omakase Dinner is a fixed-price experience, typically featuring 16-18 courses, including dessert.
Seasonal Nigiri Sushi: A significant portion of the Omakase menu includes a ten-course nigiri set. The fish and seafood are sourced from premium locations like Toyosu Market in Japan, ensuring exceptional freshness and quality. Classic preparation methods such as curing, seasoning, and aging are utilized to enhance flavors.
Prepared Courses: Beyond sushi, the Omakase features various prepared dishes utilizing diverse culinary techniques. This often includes items like grilled A5 Wagyu beef, cooked over Kishu Binchotan charcoal for unparalleled clean radiant heat, as well as other hot and cold dishes that highlight seasonal ingredients.
Beverage Pairings: To complement the exquisite food, Kappo En offers optional sake and wine pairings for an additional charge. This allows guests to enhance their culinary experience with expert beverage selections.
Intimate Open Kitchen Dining: The restaurant features an 8-seat chef's counter and an "intimate open kitchen dining room," allowing guests to observe the chefs at work and engage in conversation, creating an immersive and interactive experience.
Dietary Accommodations: While offering a fixed menu, the restaurant is known for its ability to provide accommodations for various dietary needs, as highlighted by a customer who received excellent consideration for a kosher diet. It is advisable to communicate any dietary restrictions when making reservations.
Kappo En distinguishes itself through a collection of unique features that elevate it to a premier Japanese dining destination in North Carolina:
Authentic Omakase Experience: At its heart, Kappo En offers a true Japanese Omakase experience. This means diners relinquish control to the chef, who meticulously crafts a multi-course tasting menu. This chef-driven approach ensures an authentic and often surprising culinary journey, showcasing the chef's expertise and the freshest seasonal ingredients.
High-Quality, Sourced Ingredients: The commitment to quality is paramount, with fish and seafood "sourced from Toyosu Market in Japan" and vegetables from "local farmers and Japanese vendors." This dedication to premium ingredients is evident in the "delicious" food and "interesting" fish selection, with flavors that are both unique and perfectly paired.
Intimate "Speak Easy" Vibe: The restaurant's ambiance is a significant highlight. Described as having a "speak easy vibe" and being an "intimate" space where it's "easy to hear conversation," it creates an exclusive and comfortable setting ideal for special occasions or deep culinary appreciation. The "concealed doorway" entry further enhances this unique atmosphere.
Exceptional Service and Expertise: The wait staff is consistently praised for being "helpful" and able to "explain aspects of the dinner or drinks if needed." This attentive and knowledgeable service enhances the Omakase experience, guiding diners through each course.
Artistic Presentation: Beyond taste, the "visual of the food was also very pleasant," indicating a strong emphasis on the aesthetic appeal of each dish. This commitment to presentation is characteristic of high-end Japanese dining.
Dietary Accommodations: The ability to provide "accommodations for my kosher diet" demonstrates a commendable level of flexibility and customer care for a fixed tasting menu format, making it accessible to a wider range of diners.
Grilled A5 Wagyu: The inclusion of "grilled A5 Wagyu beef" cooked over Kishu Binchotan charcoal is a significant highlight, offering a luxurious and expertly prepared meat course within the tasting menu.
Kappo En, as an exclusive Omakase restaurant, operates with a distinct model that focuses on providing a high-end, curated dining experience rather than typical daily or weekly promotions. Their primary "offer" is the Omakase Dinner itself, which is priced at $185 per person for a 16-18 course experience including dessert. Optional sake and wine pairings are available for an additional charge. An automatic service charge is applied to all checks.
Given its nature as a tasting menu experience with seasonal ingredients, the "special offer" often comes in the form of a continuously evolving menu that features rare or exceptionally fresh seasonal fish and seafood sourced directly from Japan's Toyosu Market, along with local produce. This commitment to unique, high-quality ingredients and a constantly fresh culinary perspective is part of their inherent value proposition.
Reservations are required and can be booked through their Tock page, accessible from their website. They also offer a "Waitlist feature" if reservations are full. While they don't typically run discount promotions, the exceptional quality and unique experience they provide constitute a significant value for those seeking a truly memorable fine dining experience in North Carolina. Mar 30, 2025 · Hunter AndrewsOf course! Here’s a draft for you:I recently visited Kappo En, a Japanese Omakase restaurant, with my sister who had been before, and it was an incredible experience! The food was absolutely delicious, and they provided accommodations for my kosher diet. Everything was a 10 out of 10, and I truly loved the overall experience.
Dec 31, 2024 · Amanda D.This was one of the greatest meals of my life. Excellent service and atmosphere aside, the quality and care in preparation of the food is simply perfect. We are so lucky to have this experience available to us in Charlotte and Kappo En is an absolute MUST for any sushi lover or adventurous food lover. I will be back!
Nov 17, 2024 · Aidan McSharryIncredible experience. One of a kind. Well worth every single penny. I took my guy here to celebrate many things to include Father’s Day. The dinner and sake pairings were exquisite and the chefs were masterful. My boyfriend and I were blown away and will be talking about this experience for years to come. If you want an authentic Japanese omakase style dinner right in the heart of Charlotte, find a reason to spend the money, and get there!
Jun 17, 2024 · Tina DWhat a great experience. I've always wanted to try an Omakase style meal and they of course did it justice! Ours was 18 courses and opened my horizons to new foods I haven't otherwise experienced with my lackluster food history. This includes eel, trout row, general caviar, horse mackerel, seabream, barracuda, and other types of fishes. I loved almost every dish. The atmosphere was wonderful with the modern Japanese music that was just the right volume to talk but to not be too awkward in moments of silent where you watch the chefs in awe. And the service was impeccable, constantly checking on you, filling your glass every 2 sips, folding your napkin when you step to the restroom. Everything was wonderful!
