4.0
Amazing omakase. This is a gem for San Diego, especially in the city area. The quality and thoughtfulness in their menu and service is on par with some of the ones you may experience in places like NYC, but right here! 8 seats each seating time, the service was very enjoyable and not at all feeling rushed. The food were beautifully presented prior to plating and the aroma along with the “show” is all well worth the price tag (unlike some other “omakase” we’ve been tricked to before per social media) we especially appreciated that the owner /chef was right there being part of the service. Thank you for bringing a true experience and respect for Japanese culture and food to the city of San Deigo! We had the early summer 2025 menu and was very happy with every dish, the freshness of each ingredient used (including wasabi root) beautifully shines as we eat each piece per chef’s instruction. LOVED our experience, will be returning! - Ariel Schwartz Chang

Kinme Omakase Introduce

kinme omakase

For those in San Diego, California, seeking a truly unparalleled and intimate Japanese dining experience, Kinme Omakase stands as a hidden gem, delivering an "amazing omakase" that elevates the city's culinary scene. Far from a typical sushi restaurant, Kinme Omakase is a meticulously crafted culinary journey where diners entrust their meal entirely to the chef, embracing the traditional "omakase" concept – "I leave it up to you." This establishment has quickly garnered a reputation for its exceptional quality and thoughtful approach, drawing comparisons to high-end experiences found in major culinary hubs like New York City, but with the distinct advantage of being right here in San Diego.

Kinme Omakase offers an immersive experience, combining the deep history of Kaiseki cuisine and Edomae sushi. The focus is on seasonality, harmony, and the freshest, highest-quality ingredients, sourced from Japan's famed Toyosu fish market and local Californian purveyors. Guests are treated to a "beautifully presented" multi-course meal, prepared with precision and passion right before their eyes. The ambiance is designed to be "serene" and conducive to focusing on the artistry of each dish. With only eight seats per seating time, the experience is incredibly personal and "not at all feeling rushed," allowing for genuine interaction with the owner/chef. For locals who appreciate true culinary artistry, fresh ingredients, and a respectful nod to Japanese culture and food, Kinme Omakase represents a "gem for San Diego" and a "true experience" that is "well worth the price tag."

Location and Accessibility

Kinme Omakase is strategically located at 2505 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92103, USA, placing it in the charming and upscale Bankers Hill neighborhood, adjacent to the expansive Balboa Park. This prime San Diego location makes it highly accessible for residents across California seeking a refined dining experience.

Fifth Avenue is a well-known thoroughfare, facilitating easy navigation to the restaurant. For those driving, street parking can be found in the surrounding residential and commercial areas, although, like many popular urban districts, it may require some searching, especially during peak dining hours. Utilizing ride-sharing services is a convenient alternative for guests who prefer to avoid parking. Additionally, Bankers Hill is reasonably connected to San Diego's public transportation network, including bus routes, providing options for those without a car. The discreet entry, as mentioned by some reviewers, adds to its exclusive feel, making the journey to this culinary sanctuary part of the overall experience. Its placement near Balboa Park also allows for a beautiful stroll before or after dinner, enhancing the appeal for locals looking for a complete evening out in a picturesque part of California.

Services Offered

Kinme Omakase provides a highly specialized and intimate Japanese dining experience centered around its omakase concept. Their services are designed for exclusivity and culinary immersion.

  • Omakase Prix Fixe Menu: This is the core offering. Diners fully entrust their meal to the chef, who prepares a "seasonal tasting menu" that "changes according to what ingredients are available." The menu consists of a carefully curated "multi-course Japanese meal" that combines sushi with several complementary dishes, often drawing from Kaiseki cuisine and Edomae sushi traditions. The menu for early summer 2025, for instance, received high praise.

  • Intimate Seating: The restaurant features only "8 seats each seating time," providing a truly personal and exclusive dining environment. This limited seating allows for direct interaction with the chefs and a focused culinary journey, where the "service was very enjoyable and not at all feeling rushed."

  • Two Seating Times Per Night: To accommodate demand while maintaining intimacy, Kinme Omakase typically offers two dinner seatings per night: 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM (Wednesday through Sunday).

  • Sake and Wine Pairing: To enhance the culinary experience, Kinme offers a thoughtfully selected "Sake & Wine Pairing" option to complement the omakase menu. Their drink menu includes a fine selection of Junmai, Junmai Ginjo, Junmai Daiginjo sakes, as well as vintage wines, Japanese whiskeys, beer, and non-alcoholic options like specialty sodas and various Japanese teas.

  • Expert Culinary Explanation: Chefs meticulously prepare each dish in front of the diners and explain the "origins of each course as it's prepared," detailing the ingredients and preparation techniques. This educational aspect adds significant value to the dining experience.

  • Focus on Fresh and Seasonal Ingredients: The menu is driven by "the freshest and highest quality ingredients available," with premium fish selections directly from "Japan's famed Toyosu fish market" and local California purveyors, including "real wasabi root."

  • Dessert and Traditional Matcha Service: The meal culminates with a "dessert course, and a traditional Matcha tea service," providing a ceremonial and satisfying conclusion to the culinary journey.

  • Reservations Required: Due to the limited seating and exclusive nature, reservations are essential and can be made through their website. It is advisable to book well in advance.

Features / Highlights

Kinme Omakase has quickly established itself as a pinnacle of Japanese dining in San Diego, boasting several distinctive features and highlights that set it apart for locals and visitors in California.

  • Truly Authentic Omakase Experience: This is the most significant highlight. Kinme offers a "true experience and respect for Japanese culture and food," focusing on an immersive omakase where diners entirely trust the chef's expertise. This approach, inspired by both Kaiseki cuisine (traditional multi-course meal) and Edomae sushi, delivers a "culinary journey" that showcases "seasonality and harmony."

  • Intimate and Exclusive Setting: With only "8 seats each seating time" (or sometimes 10), Kinme provides an incredibly personal and focused dining environment. This allows for direct chef-diner interaction, where the "owner/chef was right there being part of the service," explaining each dish. The atmosphere is described as "serene" and "not at all feeling rushed," a stark contrast to many bustling restaurants.

  • Exceptional Ingredient Quality: The commitment to "freshness of each ingredient used" is paramount. Kinme sources premium fish from "world renown Toyosu fish market in Tokyo" and local San Diego/Baja purveyors, including rare elements like "wasabi root." Reviewers consistently praise the "quality of the ingredients" as "excellent."

  • Artistic Presentation: The food is "beautifully presented prior to plating," creating a visual feast before it even reaches the palate. This attention to detail reflects the artistic principles of Kaiseki cuisine, where presentation is as crucial as taste.

  • High-Level Service and Engagement: Despite the small team, the service is often described as "impeccable" and "flawless," with staff "on top of everything." The chefs interact directly with guests, explaining "what each dish is, where they source each ingredient from, and the intention behind it," making it an educational and engaging "theatrical experience."

  • "Worth the Price Tag": While it is a premium experience, customers consistently state that the experience is "well worth the price tag," especially when compared to other "omakase" concepts that may not deliver the same authenticity or quality.

  • Seasonally Evolving Menu: The menu constantly evolves to "reflect the seasons and complement the daily catch," ensuring that each visit offers new discoveries and celebrates the freshest ingredients available at that specific time in California.

  • Ceremonial Matcha Tea Service: The meal concludes with a traditional Matcha tea service, providing a contemplative and authentic end to the Japanese culinary journey.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a high-end, exclusive omakase restaurant, Kinme Omakase typically does not feature traditional "promotions" in the sense of discounts or happy hours. Their primary offering is the curated, multi-course omakase experience itself, which is priced to reflect the exceptional quality of ingredients, the artistry of the chefs, and the intimate service.

  • Fixed Price Omakase Menu: The core "offer" is the all-inclusive omakase prix fixe menu. Currently, the omakase is priced at $215 per person. This represents a transparent pricing model for a premium, multi-course Japanese culinary journey, allowing diners to know the cost upfront without fear of unexpected charges (beyond additional drinks or supplements).

  • Sake & Wine Pairing Option: For an additional +$95, guests can opt for a thoughtfully curated Sake & Wine Pairing. This is an enhancement to the experience, designed to perfectly complement each course of the omakase, and while an additional cost, it provides value in terms of expert beverage pairing.

  • Seasonal Menu Evolution: While not a discount, the constantly evolving "seasonal tasting menu" (e.g., "early summer 2025 menu") can be seen as a continuous "special offer." It provides a fresh and unique experience with each visit, showcasing new ingredients and preparations that reflect the best of what's available, encouraging repeat visits from those who appreciate culinary innovation and seasonality.

  • Exclusivity as a "Promotion": The very nature of having only 8-10 seats per seating creates a sense of exclusivity and high demand, making the ability to secure a reservation a "special opportunity" in itself for those seeking a unique dining event in San Diego.

For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing and details on their omakase menu, including any potential changes or additions, it is highly recommended that interested individuals visit the official Kinme Omakase website or contact the restaurant directly via phone.
