Kirala Introduce
For Californians, especially those within the diverse and culinarily rich community of Berkeley, the name Kirala resonates with a deep sense of tradition, quality, and beloved Japanese cuisine. It's not just another sushi restaurant; it's a true institution, a "legacy established sushi place" that has been serving loyal patrons and locals for decades. Kirala embodies the essence of authentic Japanese dining, offering a wide array of dishes that consistently impress with their freshness and meticulous preparation.
Over many years, Kirala has maintained its reputation for being "quite good and popular," a testament to its enduring commitment to excellence. While it might be a bit pricier than some casual spots, the consensus among its patrons is that the "good quality" makes it "well worth it." From impeccably fresh sashimi and delightful sushi rolls to savory robata grill specialties and comforting udon dishes, Kirala promises a comprehensive and satisfying Japanese culinary journey. Despite its busy nature, the dedicated staff works hard to ensure that every visit delivers the high standards that have made Kirala a cherished part of Berkeley's dining landscape. It's a place where tradition, taste, and a genuine appreciation for Japanese culinary artistry come together to create a memorable experience.
Kirala is situated at 2100 Ward St, Berkeley, CA 94705, USA. This location places it in a well-established part of Berkeley, near the vibrant "Gourmet Ghetto" and just steps away from the original Berkeley Bowl, a significant landmark in the area. While not directly on a major thoroughfare like Telegraph Avenue, Ward Street offers a slightly more residential and serene setting, contributing to a pleasant dining atmosphere.
The restaurant's accessibility is generally good. For those driving, both free and paid street parking options are available in the vicinity, which is a considerable advantage in Berkeley. Additionally, public parking garages are located nearby, providing more consistent parking solutions. Kirala is also accessible by ramp, which is a key feature for patrons with mobility needs. However, it's worth noting that internal paths might be narrow, and seating is exclusively outdoors. For those relying on public transportation, various AC Transit bus lines serve the surrounding area, with stops within reasonable walking distance. Its location, though requiring a bit more intentional planning for seating preferences, remains convenient for locals and visitors seeking a quality Japanese meal in a slightly quieter part of Berkeley.
Kirala offers a diverse and comprehensive menu of traditional Japanese cuisine, with a strong emphasis on fresh ingredients and classic preparations, catering to a wide range of tastes.
- Sushi & Sashimi: A core offering with fresh, high-quality fish. Customers praise the "delicious fish" and mention particular favorites like Albacore, Unagi (freshwater eel), Salmon, and Hamachi (yellowtail). Nigiri (fish over rice) and sashimi (sliced raw fish) are key features.
- Sushi Rolls: While described as "limited" in variety, the rolls are consistently noted as "delicious" and are praised for their "simplicity," contrasting with "super-size, Americanized varieties." Popular choices include California Roll (with real crab), Spicy Tuna Roll, Rock'n Roll (eel, yellowtail, avocado), Shrimp Tempura Roll, Rainbow Roll, and Caterpillar Roll.
- Robata Grill Specialties: A significant highlight, offering various items grilled over charcoal. This includes:
- Chicken: Negima (with green onion), Kashiwa (tender breast), Teba (wings), Wasabi Chicken, Ume Chicken (pickled plum).
- Beef & Pork: Asparagus Beef, Asparagus Bacon, Baby Back Ribs, Lamb Chops.
- Seafood: Scallop (with cream sauce), Baby Lobster Tail, Hamachi Kama (yellowtail collar), Ika Sugata (whole squid), Saba (mackerel), Sanma (needle fish).
- Miso Marinated Fish: Gindara (black cod) and Salmon, both grilled.
- Vegetables: Corn, Shishito (Japanese bell pepper), Shitake Mushroom.
- Donburi (Rice Bowls): Offers various rice bowls, including Ten-Don (shrimp & vegetable tempura over rice), Oyako-Don (chicken with egg over rice), Unagi-Don (grilled eel over rice), and Katsu-Don (deep-fried pork with egg over rice).

- Dine-In & Takeout: While known for its dine-in experience, takeout is also available, including online ordering through platforms like ChowNow.
Kirala's long-standing success and loyal customer base stem from several distinct features that make it a standout Japanese restaurant in Berkeley.
- Legacy & Established Quality: As a "legacy established sushi place," Kirala has maintained a reputation for "good quality" over many years, with patrons frequently noting its consistent excellence. This longevity speaks volumes about its reliability and dedication to standards.
- Exceptional Freshness of Fish: A major highlight, particularly for sushi and sashimi lovers, is the freshness of the fish. Reviewers consistently praise the quality of their raw fish offerings.
- Wide Variety of Authentic Japanese Cuisine: Beyond just sushi, Kirala offers a comprehensive menu that includes a strong robata grill selection, delicious udon, well-prepared katsu, and various traditional Japanese entrees, appealing to a broad range of tastes.
- Robata Grill Specialization: The robata grill is a significant feature, providing unique and flavorful grilled items that customers often rave about, setting it apart from many other Japanese restaurants.
- Hot & Flavorful Miso Soup: A small but important detail, the clam miso soup is specifically mentioned as being "quite hot," a refreshing contrast to often lukewarm miso soups found elsewhere.
- Efficient Service (Despite Being Busy): While the restaurant is often "packed" and can have slow periods, service is generally described as "pretty fast," especially considering how busy they are, showcasing their ability to handle high demand.
- Outdoor Seating Experience: The fact that it's "only outdoor seating" offers a unique dining experience, allowing patrons to enjoy their meal in the fresh air, which is particularly appealing in California's climate.
- Accessibility: The availability of a ramp for access and the presence of both free and paid street parking contribute to its convenience for diverse customers.
Kirala's approach to "promotions" largely centers on its inherent value proposition derived from its established quality and diverse menu, rather than regular discounted deals. However, there is a key payment-related preference that benefits customers.
- Cash Payment Preference/Surcharge for Credit Cards: A notable point for customers is that "credit card payment incur extra 4%, cash preferred." This acts as an incentive for customers to pay with cash, effectively offering a small discount for doing so. This is a direct saving for patrons choosing cash.
- Consistent High Quality for Price: While described as "a bit pricy," the consensus is that the "good quality" makes the cost "well worth it." This perceived value for fresh, authentic Japanese cuisine serves as an ongoing attraction for discerning diners who prioritize quality.
- Varied Menu for Different Budgets: The extensive menu, encompassing a range of items from more affordable rolls and appetizers to higher-end sashimi and robata specials, allows diners to choose options that fit their budget while still experiencing Kirala's quality.
- Lunch Specials (Potential): While not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews, many established Japanese restaurants offer special lunch sets or bentos that provide a more affordable way to experience their cuisine during daytime hours. It is advisable to check their current menu or inquire directly for any such offerings.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on any specific promotions, new menu items, or special events, it's always recommended to check Kirala's official website or contact them directly.

Aug 12, 2024 · Max KayAfter many years, this sushi and Japanese restaurant is still quite good and popular. The fish in my sashimi was fresh, the clam miso was quite hot (hate it when miso is like warm which often is many sushi restaurants). The service was pretty fast though they were busy as always.
Dec 13, 2023 · Farshid KetabchiVisiting from Colorado and looking for great sushi. Walked from University of California campus about 20 minutes. Walked in greeted and seated right away. Service was outstanding! Atmosphere busy yet pleasant. The Sushi here prepared to perfection!Definitely recommend if looking for Sushi along with other Japanese cuisine.
May 01, 2024 · Aaron SternbergReally high quality sushi with simple design. Price is pretty hefty but the rolls are really good especially the eel and rainbow rolls. A bit of a wait if you arrive right as they open. Recommend ordering the rolls and the short ribs. Squid is okay, shrimp skewers are not worth it. The terrayaki salmon is pretty good, and the katsus are all definitely very crispy but I would order raw fish if I were here as that is definitely their specialty.
Jun 15, 2023 · Emily LiuCame here on a Wednesday night and the place was packed. Luckily, despite the full house we only waited for about 10 minutes before we got our table. Once seated we ordered a whole bunch of stuff. Everything was pretty tasty, except for the Japanese salad which is not my favorite. Also everything was rather small in portion, if it weren't for the udon, I would have definitely needed more food. All in all, it was a good meal and the food was yummy. I just need to order more food next time to make sure I don't leave hungry. Lol...
