If you're like me, always looking for a great value in Omakase, Kun Tsuki is definitely worth the trip and the money. Excellent service, intimate environment, and a wonderful 18 course menu for the price ($85 plus tax and tip). Highlights were their exceptionally tasty take on miso soup, the toro with caviar, salmon with foie gras, and miso crisp with toro and uni. They also leaned into spice the night I went, using a variety of pepper based sauces, which I really enjoyed. For uni fans--you won't be disappointed. There's was exceptionally good, bending toward the sweet. For people who don't enjoy aburi nigiri (torched or seared)--probably 4 or 5 pieces were aburi. All and all, it's a great value, a lovely atmosphere and a wonderful menu. - Carla Briscoe

Services Offered

Kun Tsuki Omakase Xtra focuses primarily on delivering a quintessential omakase experience, streamlining their offerings to ensure a high-quality and intimate sushi journey.

  • Signature Omakase (18-Course Dinner): This is the restaurant's flagship offering, providing an extensive 18-course chef-selected tasting menu. It includes a generous selection of nigiri, typically 13 pieces, along with a hand roll, two appetizers, a soup (often an "exceptionally tasty take on miso soup"), and a dessert. This comprehensive menu is designed to showcase a wide variety of fresh fish and creative preparations.

  • Omakase (10-Course Lunch): For a more casual yet refined daytime experience, Kun Tsuki offers a 10-course lunch omakase. This typically includes 6 pieces of sushi and 4 additional courses, served during a 60-minute seating session at the sushi bar.

  • Intimate Sushi Bar Seating: Both lunch and dinner experiences often take place at a dedicated sushi bar, fostering an intimate and interactive environment where guests can watch their dishes being prepared right in front of them.

  • Alcohol Service: Kun Tsuki Omakase Xtra sells alcohol on-site, offering a selection of beer and wine to complement the sushi. While they sell alcohol, guests are also welcome to bring their own beverages (BYOB), which is a significant highlight for many patrons.

  • BYOB Policy: The option to Bring Your Own Bottle (BYOB) is a unique and highly appreciated service, allowing guests to pair their favorite sake or wine with their omakase meal, potentially enhancing the value proposition.

  • Educational Interaction with Chefs: The staff, including chefs like Chef Wing, Jason, and Kevin, are known for being personable and knowledgeable, eager to share insights about the food's origins, preparation techniques, and serving temperatures. This educational aspect enriches the dining experience.

Features / Highlights

Kun Tsuki Omakase Xtra has quickly become a local favorite due to several compelling features and highlights that set it apart in New York City's competitive sushi landscape.

  • Exceptional Value for Omakase: Perhaps its most celebrated feature, Kun Tsuki offers an 18-course omakase menu at a price point ($85-$89 plus tax and tip for dinner) that is considered outstanding value in the NYC market. This allows more New Yorkers to experience high-quality omakase without the typical ultra-premium cost.

  • Intimate and Engaging Environment: The restaurant cultivates an intimate atmosphere, often centered around a sushi bar where guests can directly interact with the chefs. This open kitchen concept allows diners to watch their dishes being meticulously prepared, creating a highly personalized and engaging experience.

  • High-Quality & Creative Offerings: Patrons consistently praise the exceptional quality of the fish and the creative touches added to each piece. Highlights include "toro with caviar," "salmon with foie gras," and "miso crisp with toro and uni," showcasing both classic ingredients and innovative flavor combinations. The uni, in particular, is noted for its exceptional sweetness.

  • Personalized Chef Interaction: The staff, including chefs such as Chef Wing, Jason, and Kevin, are commended for their personable nature and extensive knowledge. They are eager to share details about the food's origins, preparation, and serving temperatures, enriching the dining experience with transparency and education.

  • Unique Flavor Profiles (e.g., Spice & Aburi): The chefs are not afraid to lean into interesting flavor profiles, incorporating various pepper-based sauces and offering a good number of aburi (torched or seared) nigiri pieces, which adds variety and excitement to the traditional omakase format.

  • BYOB Option (Sells Alcohol On-Site): The rare and highly convenient option to bring your own bottle (BYOB) of wine or sake, alongside their on-site alcohol sales, significantly enhances the dining experience, allowing guests to tailor their beverage pairings to their preference and budget.

Promotions or Special Offers

While Kun Tsuki Omakase Xtra is celebrated for its inherent value within the New York omakase scene, specific public promotions or ongoing discounts are not extensively advertised. The core appeal lies in its consistently competitive pricing for the high-quality, multi-course omakase experience it provides. However, based on customer reviews and common restaurant practices, potential "offers" for New Yorkers might include:

  • Exceptional Fixed-Price Value: The primary "special offer" is the very price point of their 18-course omakase dinner, which at around $85-$89 (plus tax and tip) is significantly lower than comparable high-quality omakase experiences in NYC. This makes the entire dining experience feel like a fantastic deal, rather than a temporary promotion.

  • Lunch Omakase (Value Option): For an even more accessible experience, the 10-course lunch omakase provides a condensed version of their evening offering, often at a lower price point, making it suitable for a midday indulgence or a taste of their craftsmanship.

  • BYOB Policy: While not a discount, the ability to Bring Your Own Bottle (BYOB) of wine or sake allows guests to save significantly on beverage costs, which can often add substantially to the bill at other high-end sushi restaurants. This effectively acts as a value-add for savvy diners.

  • Potential for Off-Peak Incentives: Like many restaurants, Kun Tsuki might offer unadvertised incentives for booking during less busy hours (e.g., early weeknights). It's always worth checking their reservation platform (e.g., Resy) for any specific availability that might indicate a push for certain time slots.

  • Loyalty or Referral Programs: While not explicitly stated, highly regarded local establishments sometimes offer informal loyalty recognition for returning customers or referral benefits. Engaging with the staff and becoming a regular might lead to unadvertised perks.

For the most current information regarding pricing or any new offerings, it is always recommended for New Yorkers to check the official Kun Tsuki Omakase Xtra reservation pages (such as on Resy) or contact the restaurant directly. The value of their core offering remains a constant draw for those seeking a premium sushi experience without the exorbitant cost.
