Dine-In with Open-Theater Kitchen: The hallmark of Marugame Udon is its unique "open-theater kitchen" concept. This allows guests to watch their udon noodles being made fresh to order and their tempura being fried right in front of them. The ordering process is akin to a cafeteria-style queue, where you select your udon bowl, then proceed to a self-serve tempura bar to pick your desired sides, and finally customize your bowl with toppings and sauces. This interactive approach provides a fresh, engaging, and efficient dining experience.
Hand-Crafted Udon: All udon noodles at Marugame Udon are made in-house, ensuring optimal freshness and texture. This commitment to traditional preparation methods is a key differentiator and a major draw for customers seeking authentic Japanese flavors.
Freshly Fried Tempura: A highlight of the Marugame Udon experience is the variety of freshly fried tempura available. From shrimp and sweet potato to unique options like tamagoyaki (sweet egg omelette) and squid, these crispy delights are made continuously to ensure they are hot and perfectly crisp when you select them. They also offer a self-serve tempura sauce dispenser to complement your choices.
Takeout: For those who prefer to enjoy their Japanese comfort food at home, Marugame Udon offers efficient takeout services. You can call ahead or order in person for a quick pick-up.
Delivery Services: Recognizing the demand for convenience, Marugame Udon partners with popular food delivery platforms such as DoorDash and Uber Eats. This allows customers to have their freshly made udon and tempura delivered directly to their homes or workplaces within the delivery radius.
Customizable Bowls: Beyond the main udon dishes and tempura, Marugame Udon offers a variety of optional add-ons and condiments. This includes complimentary scallions and tempura flakes, along with various broths, sauces, and proteins, allowing for a highly personalized meal tailored to individual preferences.
Marugame Udon stands out in the bustling San Gabriel dining scene due to several distinctive features that enhance the customer experience and culinary offering.
Made-to-Order Freshness: The absolute highlight is the commitment to making udon noodles to order. This means every bowl features perfectly chewy, fresh noodles, a quality that is immediately noticeable and contributes significantly to the overall enjoyment of the meal. The open-theater kitchen reinforces this transparency, allowing diners to witness the dedication to freshness.
Variety of Udon Broths and Styles: Marugame Udon offers a diverse range of udon bowls to suit various tastes. Popular options include:
Nikutama Udon: Served in an umami-rich sauce, often with sweet beef and a soft-boiled egg. This is a very popular choice and can be enjoyed hot or cold.
Beef Udon: Sanuki-style udon in a traditional dashi broth, topped with sweet beef.
Tonkotsu Udon: Featuring a creamy and savory pork broth, often with chashu pork. While one reviewer found a surprisingly strong ginger taste in the tonkotsu, which they hadn't experienced before, its inclusion offers a rich, hearty option.
Teri Chicken Tartar Udon: A "Limited Time Offer" mentioned by a reviewer, served in a "BK sauce" with teriyaki chicken, tartar sauce, and shredded seaweed, showcasing creative fusion options.
Kake Udon: A simple and classic Sanuki-style udon served in a traditional dashi broth, perfect for appreciating the pure noodle flavor.
Curry Udon/Nikutama Curry Udon: Udon served in an aromatic, hearty Japanese curry sauce, sometimes with sweet beef and a soft-boiled egg.
Tan Tan (Vegan) Udon: A spicy Japanese-style sesame chili broth with ground spicy soy meat and bok choy, offering a robust vegan option.
Extensive Tempura Selection: The self-serve tempura bar is a major draw, offering an array of freshly fried items. Customer favorites include shrimp tempura and sweet potato tempura. Other options often include chicken, squid, potato croquette, pumpkin, zucchini, and gyoza. While one review noted squid tempura being "extremely greasy," the general sentiment points to a wide, fresh selection.
Rice Bowl Options: Beyond udon, Marugame offers various rice bowls such as Beef Gyudon (signature sweet beef over white rice) and Chicken Katsu Curry or Teriyaki (crispy chicken katsu over rice or udon noodles). This expands the menu to cater to different preferences.
Fair Prices: Many customers note that the prices are fair, especially considering the quality and freshness of the ingredients and the portion sizes. This makes it an economical choice for a satisfying Japanese meal.
Clean and Organized Interior: The restaurant's interior decor is described as simple, neat, and organized, with dozens of seats, creating a comfortable and pleasant dining environment.
Cordial, Knowledgeable, and Professional Staff: Reviewers frequently commend the staff for being cordial, knowledgeable, and professional, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Refreshing Beverages: Drinks like the Calamansi juice are highlighted as fresh and refreshing, providing a perfect complement to the savory udon and tempura.
While specific, long-term promotions are not widely advertised, Marugame Udon, as a growing brand (established 2025, according to a review, indicating its relative newness in the area), may offer various deals to attract new customers and reward loyal patrons. Locals should keep an eye on their official website or social media channels for potential limited-time offers, seasonal specials, or loyalty programs. When ordering through delivery platforms like DoorDash or Uber Eats, look out for platform-specific promotions such as "no delivery fee on your first order" or discounted bundles, which are common for new and popular establishments. Given their emphasis on a rotating "Limited Time Offer" for certain udon bowls, it's clear they consistently introduce new and potentially promotional menu items.

Marugame Udon Reviews
Marugame Udon (est 2025) is a new Japanese restaurant that provides hand crafted udon bowls, tempura, and beverages. It’s located in a large old plaza on Valley blvd in SGV.They have an open theater kitchen, allowing guests to watch as their food is prepared. Similarly, their udon noodles are made to order to ensure that you are getting the best tasting Japanese food around. Interior decor is simple with dozens of seats; everything was neat and organized. We ordered Teri Chicken Tartar udon, Calamansi juice, Sweet potatoes and Tamagoyaki tempura. TCT udon was warm with bold flavors and texture as well the tempura. Juice was fresh. Staff were cordial, knowledgeable and professional. Prices were fair.Overall, I enjoyed my Japanese udon and dine-in experience. I recommend you visit.
Apr 23, 2025 · Carlo N.Been wanting to try Marugame Udon for a while now. We ordered the beef udon and the tonkotsu udon, along with some tempura shrimp, squid, sweet potato, and chicken karaage. Overall, we thought it was just average — nothing spectacular. The broths weren’t very flavorful, and the tonkotsu had a surprisingly strong ginger taste, which I’ve never experienced in tonkotsu before. For the tempura, we enjoyed the shrimp and sweet potato the most. Oddly, the squid was extremely greasy, which made it less enjoyable. The chicken karaage was decent, but I’ve definitely had better elsewhere. Overall, I’m glad I finally got to try it, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to return.
Apr 27, 2025 · TeeTee RodIt's Grand Opening at Marugame Udon San Gabriel CA!! What a vibe! Loud music & energetic staffs! Spacious dining hall.I ordered #4 Kitsune udon, 1pc zucchini tempura. Tempura temperature & color is right, clean frying oil of course. Udon wasn't up to Marugame's standard, it was soft and overcooked. I get it, it's the shop's first hour of operation. Didn't wanna make a scene about it. But when I took my second bite, the manager came to check on my orders, so I frankly shared my feedbacks. The manager then brought over the chef-in-charge to my table and offered to redo my order. 15 mins later, my bowl of "authentic" Marugame udon arrived. That's 21st century service attitude. Thanks & Best of luck to Marugame team San Gabriel!!
Mar 31, 2025 · A CellarFound this Udon spot on IG and had to check it out.First time here and the Udon is up to par with its savory flavors. The thick wheat flour noodles are made fresh and cooked fresh right in front of you, made to order. You may pick & choose the many styles of broth from Shoyu/Tonkotsu to create your own likings and then head over to the pick and choose tempura or your choice from shrimps to veggies.I skipped the shrimp and let my daughter have the last one.I chose sweet potato, zucchini, and squash.I will say that the next time I will wait for fresh batches because a couple tempura pieces came out cold and a tad bit on the un-crunchy side of things.I tried their tonkotsu broth and it was pretty good to the taste, however not quite as rich and creamy textures that I prefer. The restaurant was clean, organized, and their service was good.I give their Torrance location a try and see how they do with a different choice of soup broth.
May 09, 2025 · Ryant TakaiThe soup base was a little on the sweeter side, a little too sweet for my taste. The tonkotsu soup base would be my favorite of all their soups.
