-
Exceptional Fish Quality: The paramount feature of Matsumoto is its unwavering commitment to the highest quality fish. Ingredients are flown in directly from the Toyosu Fish Market in Japan every day, guaranteeing unparalleled freshness and authenticity. This dedication is evident in every bite, from delicate nigiri to rich sashimi.
-
Rare and Seasonal Varieties: Diners frequently rave about the availability of unique and often rare seasonal fish that are not commonly found at other sushi establishments. Examples highlighted by customers include "soft abalone," fresh octopus, sea perch, various types of uni, golden eye snapper, giant clam, and firefly squid. This extensive and rotating selection ensures a new discovery with every visit.
-
Masterful Chef Naruki Matsumoto: The restaurant is led by Chef Naruki Matsumoto, an Osaka-born culinary artist with extensive experience. He honed his skills under master sushi chef Mr. Nozawa at Sushi Nozawa and later mastered Kaiseki at Hirozen before taking ownership and renaming the restaurant. His expertise and dedication to the "Omakase" aesthetic are central to Matsumoto's appeal.
-
Traditional Omakase Experience: Matsumoto offers a truly traditional omakase, a multi-course meal entirely left to the chef’s discretion. This provides an intimate and personalized dining experience, showcasing the chef’s artistry and the freshest ingredients of the day. It’s highly recommended for those seeking a genuine Japanese culinary journey.
-
Impeccable Service: Beyond the food, Matsumoto is known for its outstanding service. Customers consistently praise the attentiveness and professionalism of the staff, which significantly enhances the overall dining experience, making guests feel welcomed and valued.
-
High-End and Refined Atmosphere: While located in a strip mall, Matsumoto provides a refined and intimate ambiance. It's often described as a "hidden gem" that offers a premiere sushi experience without the overt flashiness of some other high-end establishments. The focus remains on the quality of the food and the craft of the chef.
Matsumoto is known for its high-quality, authentic Japanese offerings, with a focus on traditional omakase experiences. While specific, regularly advertised promotions are not widely detailed in public information, the restaurant's menu structure itself often features distinct tiers and combinations that can be considered special offerings for different dining preferences and budgets.
For instance, the pricing for their signature omakase varies based on the number of courses or pieces included. Guests can choose from options like the "Sushi Omakase: 10pc + 1 Roll" or a more extensive "Sushi Omakase: 18pcs," allowing for a tailored experience. This tiered approach provides flexibility for diners to select an omakase experience that suits their appetite and desired investment in the culinary journey.
Additionally, the availability of "Special Assorted Sushi" and "Premium Sushi" sets, which come with miso soup and a selection of nigiri and rolls, serves as a more structured offering for those who might prefer a pre-selected combination rather than a full omakase. These sets often feature a curated selection of popular and high-quality fish, providing a more accessible entry point to Matsumoto's renowned quality.
Given the seasonal nature of their ingredients, Matsumoto's "Today's Sushi" menu, which lists individual nigiri pieces based on daily arrivals from Japan, inherently acts as a form of "special offer" by providing access to the freshest and most unique catches available. Diners looking for specific rare fish may find these rotating daily specials to be the ultimate promotion.
It is always recommended to contact the restaurant directly or check their official website or social media channels for the most current information regarding any limited-time promotions, seasonal menu additions, or special events that might be available.

Matsumoto Reviews
Hands down the best sushi in K-town, and one of the most impressive traditional Japanese Omakase restaurants in L.A. Soft abalone is something you cannot taste anywhere else. They have over 40 different types of seasonal fish served everyday. Fresh octopus, sea perch, uni, golden eye snapper, giant clam, firefly squid, and many more. It was amazing. Service was impeccable as well. This is a true hidden gem in K-town.
Apr 28, 2025 · Hyung KimGreat selection of sashimi and sushi. They’re more on the high end though. The food portion was not quite tiny but the taste was above my expectations. Definitely recommended
Dec 04, 2024 · Susan NgProbably one of the top sushi chefs on this continent - definitely of what I’ve experienced, and the closest I’ve come to feeling like I’m in a high end sushi place in Japan. Went to Hirozen in WeHo a few times years ago, then Matsumoto at that same location, and I’m so excited that it has moved to Koreatown, within walking distance for me. Had lunch there today and every single bite was perfect. It’s not cheap, but it can’t be, at this level of quality, service, and attention to detail.
Apr 15, 2025 · George CPHENOMENAL. best sushi i’ve had in LA - no question… and definitely in my top 5 ever. Did the 25 piece omakase. kept waiting for a disappointing piece to arrive but it never came! Chef was friendly and took great pride in his work. the fish was incredibly fresh (flown in from japan one day prior) and the service was flawless. i spent way too much money and don’t regret it for one second. thank you Matsumoto for a fabulous meal. CANNOT WAIT TO GO BACK!
Aug 21, 2024 · Boyd SloanCannot recommend this restaurant enough!!! The food is fantastic, blows any sushi in LA out of the water. If you’re a true sushi lover, the omakase menu is a must try.
