Minoru Introduce
For residents of Montclair, New Jersey, and the surrounding sophisticated communities, Minoru stands as an exceptional and truly unique Japanese restaurant that promises a dining experience unlike any other in the region. This is not your average sushi spot; Minoru elevates Japanese cuisine to an art form, providing an authentic yet modern culinary journey that transports diners directly to Japan. It's a highly acclaimed destination for those seeking meticulously crafted dishes, impeccable presentation, and an unforgettable meal, making it ideal for special occasions or when you simply want to indulge in extraordinary flavors.
Minoru consistently receives rave reviews from its patrons, with some declaring it a "Top 5 meal of my life." The authenticity of the experience is frequently highlighted, with comments like, "you are dining in Japan." It's crucial to note that this is a "next level" Japanese restaurant, moving beyond "typical 'American style' Japanese food" to offer unique preparations such as "cooking your own wagyu beef on a hot stone." The creativity and harmony of flavors are celebrated, with the "Shima Aji and fig carpaccio" noted as a "perfect complement of flavors," and the "corn ribs" described as "delectable." A particularly innovative dish, "spicy salmon with guacamole on mochi wafers," has earned a heroic commendation. Even dishes that were "least impressed" with (like the soba) were "still delicious," speaking volumes about the overall quality. Beyond the food, the "decor is clean and sophisticated," and the "food is presented as a work of art," enhancing the high-end experience. Service is praised as "very attentive" and "excellent," with food arriving "fast." While it's acknowledged as an "expensive" "occasion type place," customers unequivocally state it's "well worth it," with memorable experiences like the "fantastic" dessert mango parfait.
Minoru is conveniently located at 608 Valley Rd FL2, Montclair, NJ 07043, USA. This address places it in the Upper Montclair section, a charming and upscale area known for its local businesses and relaxed atmosphere. Situated on the second floor, Minoru offers a more intimate and perhaps exclusive dining experience, setting it apart from street-level establishments.
Valley Road is a main artery in Montclair, ensuring good accessibility from various parts of the township and surrounding areas like Verona, Cedar Grove, and Clifton. While direct on-site parking at the building might be limited due to its second-floor location, Upper Montclair generally offers a combination of street parking and municipal lots within walking distance. Visitors should be prepared for typical urban parking scenarios, which might involve paid options. Given that Minoru is positioned as an "occasion type place," planning for parking by arriving a little early or utilizing ride-sharing services might be advisable to ensure a smooth arrival. The elevated location contributes to its sophisticated ambiance, making it a desirable destination for a special night out in New Jersey.

Attentive and Professional Service: The staff are consistently praised as "very attentive" and "excellent," ensuring a seamless and personalized dining experience. They are noted for their professionalism and efficiency, even bringing food out "fast."
Reservations Recommended: Given its popularity and status as a destination restaurant, making reservations is highly recommended, especially for weekends or special occasions, to secure a table. Minoru accepts reservations up to 30 days in advance.

BYOB (Beer, Wine, Sake only): Minoru operates as a BYOB establishment for beer, wine, and sake only. This allows guests to bring their preferred beverages to complement their high-end meal, potentially making the experience more cost-effective (no hard liquor allowed per NJ BYOB regulations).
Diverse & Unique Japanese Menu: Minoru offers a menu that goes beyond typical Americanized Japanese fare. It includes a range of chilled dishes (e.g., Wagyu Tataki, Shima Aji & Fig Carpaccio), fried items (e.g., Yasai Tempura, Gyoza, Karaage), grilled selections (e.g., Gindara Saikyo Yaki, Yaki Corn Ribs), unique buns, ramen, udon & soba, donburi/curry, and fried rice, with a strong emphasis on high-quality ingredients like A5 Wagyu and Hokkaido Uni.

Given Minoru's positioning as a high-end, "occasion type place" with a focus on authentic and unique Japanese culinary experiences, it's less likely to feature frequent, traditional discount-based promotions. The value at Minoru comes from the exceptional quality of ingredients, the authenticity of the preparation, the artistic presentation, and the impeccable service. However, there are aspects that could be considered "special offers" in a broader sense for a restaurant of this caliber:
Specialty & Seasonal Menus: Minoru's menu highlights "Chef's Specials" and offers unique items like "Mentaiko pasta," "Sabazushi," and "Kaisen don" featuring premium ingredients (Hokkaido uni, ikura, zuwai kani). These rotating or signature dishes act as a form of special offer, providing unique culinary experiences not found elsewhere.
BYOB Policy: The BYOB policy (for beer, wine, and sake only) is a significant advantage for diners. It allows patrons to enjoy their preferred alcoholic beverages without the typical restaurant markups, potentially making a high-end meal more accessible.
Private Dining Opportunities: The availability of a communal table for larger groups and a forthcoming private dining room serves as a special offering for those looking for a more personalized or exclusive celebration.
Special Occasion Accommodations: As evidenced by a customer celebrating a birthday, Minoru goes the extra mile to make special occasions memorable, indicating a focus on creating unique experiences rather than just offering discounts.

Minoru Reviews
Top 5 meal of my life. Actually, like you are dining in Japan. Do not go here expecting sushi and typical “American style” Japanese food. This is next level- like cooking your own wagyu beef on a hot stone next level. The Shima Aji And fig carpaccio was the perfect complement of flavors. The corn ribs are delectable and whoever thought to put spicy salmon with guacamole on mochi wafers is my hero! Shockingly I was least impressed with the soba, but it was still delicious. The decor is clean and sophisticated. The food is presented as a work of art. Not to be missed! Thank you to the staff for making my birthday extra special. The dessert mango parfait was fantastic. Definitely an occasion type place because it is expensive, But well worth it!!
May 13, 2025 · Lili J.Beautiful restaurant serving high quality Japanese dishes! We celebrated our anniversary here and after having honeymooned in Japan, I can say the dishes are certainly authentic but also have a modern twist. The servers were very attentive and overall were excellent. Our food came out fast. The only aspect we weren't huge fans of is the large shared table as we were hoping for a more private dining experience for our anniversary. But overall, we enjoyed Minoru and will be back!
May 06, 2025 · Nicole Y.Discover an incredible gem in Upper Montclair that’s an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves upscale Japanese cuisine! The quality and presentation of every dish are outstanding. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic date night or any special occasion. You have to try the hitsumabushi and the Wagyu hot stone. They’re my personal favorites! You won't be disappointed!
Mar 06, 2025 · Patty PaholtupIt was my first time visiting with some friends, and the interior alone was already impressive. The service was excellent, and everything on the menu looked so good that we had a hard time choosing. The prices are definitely on the higher side, but it was absolutely worth it. I highly recommend this place for a date night. The staff were super friendly and took the time to explain each dish in detail.
May 09, 2025 · YeseeFood is awesome. Thank you to the folks responsible for keeping tradition and serving HITSUMABUSHI the proper way.Having left Asia 3 years ago I’ve not found a place that served Nagoya style eel quite like this place since. Ambiance 10/10 decor and service stellar. I appreciate the real wasabi served here and not the crap squeezed out of a tube. At a time when Attention to detail and flavors are getting hard to come by, Minoru stands out among the crowd.
